Keep the animal warm to prevent shock.

Keep it dark and quiet to relieve stress and help
the animal feel secure. A small box with air holes
and a paper towel lining is helpful.
NEVER give it water or food. The wrong diet or
food administered improperly can be fatal.
Contact the nearest wildlife center or
state agency.
If the nearest facility is FWMA, transport
the animal directly to the center.
(No phone call is needed.)
Before rescuing an animal that appears
orphaned, check our website www.FWMA.org
for helpful tips on how to determine whether you
should intervene and when.

Our History

Education Programs

Established in 1994, the FWMA wildlife hospital and

rehabilitation facility is located on 6.5 acres of rural
land in Crawfordville, Florida. It was founded by the
Beatty family as a place to bring sick, injured and
orphaned wildlife in need of treatment and care until
recovered and subsequently released back into their
natural habitat.

FWMA offers a variety of educational opportunities.

At the center, hands-on training and employment
opportunities are available for young people, ages
16 to 25. Participants represent a diverse group
including disabled students, at-risk youths doing
community service, and gifted students seeking
scholarship credit hours.

Over 15,000
animals rescued
in 21 years
of operation.

Community outreach programs are conducted in

local schools and other public venues, and we also
attend community events and festivals. Our programs
feature educational animals from the center that
serve as wildlife ambassadors for their species.

Vision for the Future

Since its establishment in

Wakulla
County 21 years ago, the vision
at FWMA
has always been to obtain land to
expand the
wildlife medical/rehabilitation center and facilitate
achievement of a long term goal: the creation of a
wildlife educational center which would be open to
the general public and would operate alongside the
rehabilitation center. The center is presently located
on private property owned by the Beatty family
who generously donate use of their land and also
help run the center. Currently the sanctuary is only
permitted as a rehabilitation center and is not open
to the general public as it is where sick, injured and
orphaned animals are treated.
The first step toward making this vision a reality
is locating the ideal piece of property for FWMA
to call it new home. FWMA has made tremendous
progress in raising money towards construction of
a new medical building and is now actively seeking
a donation of a suitable tract of land with a target
date of spring 2016 to finalize the acquisition and
initiate construction of the medical building at
that site.

Moving the center will ensure its sustainability

and allow FWMA to grow and develop the
medical facility and wildlife education center
to better serve our local community.

Volunteer Opportunities

WILDLIFE RESCUE
Every year between 700 and 1000
sick, injured and orphaned wild animals
receive treatment at FWMA at no
charge to the public. In 2014 the center
provided care for nearly 800 native
birds, mammals and reptiles, and 64%
were returned to their natural habitat.
As this area continues to grow so does
the demand for our services. FWMA
provides wildlife rescue services to four
rural coastal counties along the Florida
Forgotten Coast: Wakulla, Franklin,
Taylor, and Jefferson Counties.

Volunteers provide essential support to our

programs and services that help all animals in need.
There are many activities to choose from, and the
only requirement is that animal care volunteers be at
least 16 years of age; otherwise parental supervision
is required.
Duties at the center involve indoor and outdoor
activities necessary to keep the buildings, animal
habitats and grounds clean. Volunteers may also learn
skills needed to feed baby birds and mammals, foster
animals in need, transport animals, and participate in
wildlife releases. Groups are welcome too!
There are so many ways you
can help! Please visit our
website to learn more about
our volunteer programs.
