The UCD Applied Language Centre (ALC) provides a variety of courses in English for non-native speakers.
In 1997, University College Dublin opened the Daedalus
Building at the heart of the Belfield Campus. This facility is one
of the first in Ireland to be built specifically for language learning. It was designed to provide the best possible learning environment for students and for optimum integration of the latest
technology in language education.
University College Dublin is a dynamic, modern university
where cutting edge research and scholarship provide a stimulating intellectual environment - the ideal surroundings for
learning and discovery.

8Some important points

8General information
Year-Round Courses: English tuition takes place Monday to Friday. Classes are
offered at all levels from lower intermediate to advanced, and there are no more
than 14 students in a class (the average is 10 to 12). Classes take place in the
Daedalus Building.
A social and cultural programme is included in the course fees, which consists of
afternoon visits to places of cultural and historical interest. Access to university
facilities is also included, including restaurants, sports facilities and other campus
amenities. Occasionally, due to circumstances beyond our control, access to certain college facilities may be restricted.
All required course materials are provided for the duration of the programme.
Course participants must be 18 years of age or over. Students who are aged 17
may occasionally be accepted, provided they have written authorisation from parents or guardians, and at the discretion of the Director.
Courses begin on Monday morning at 9:00 hours, unless Monday is a National
Holiday, when they start on Tuesday. Please note that in 2011 there will be no
tuition on 17 March, 22 April, 25 April, 2 May, 6 June, 1 August and 31 October, as
these days are National Holidays. Tuition for these days is not refundable.
All fees must be paid in full six weeks before the course start date.
Students taking one complete 2, 3 or 4-week course may stay for additional weeks,
depending on availability. Please check before making arrangements (e.g.
booking flights) and contact us as early as possible with your arrival details.
Students must have a minimum attendance record to obtain a certificate.

8Accommodation
All accommodation is reserved from the Sunday before the start of the course, up to
and including the Saturday night after the end of the course. Additional accommodation can be arranged if the ALC is notified four weeks before the start of the
course.
Homestay: Single-room accommodation is organised with families selected by
the University. Daily transport to and from the college is not arranged, but all families are within a radius of 6 kilometres of the campus, and there are excellent commuting facilities. Rates quoted are for part-board, breakfast and evening meals
during the week, and breakfast, lunch and evening meals at the weekend. Food
is available in restaurants, bars and shops on campus, at reasonable rates.

8Insurance
Course participants are strongly advised to take out full travel, health, money and
baggage insurance in advance, in their home country. EU nationals should also
bring their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Participants are responsible for
their own personal effects during the programme. The ALC will not cover costs
which may arise as a result of the need for hospitalisation or repatriation of a participant. Students are advised to insure against loss of fees and/or other expenses
which may be incurred due to cancellation or sudden, early departure from a course.

8Visa
EU/EEAnationals do not require a visa to study in Ireland. Other applicants should
contact the Irish embassy responsible for their country, or the Department of Foreign
Affairs (see website: http://www.inis.gov.ie/). Cancellation fees may apply, should an
applicants visa be refused.

8Cancellation
Cancellation charges are applicable to all prospective participants in this programme. Regulations concerning cancellation charges will be supplied to intending
students, on request. Accommodation and tuition fees are not refundable if a participant arrives late, or wishes to leave a course early.
