The novel that I have read is dear Mr Kilmer by Anne Schraff.

The character I admire is

Richard Knight. Richard is a 15 year old boy who lives on a farm. he has a father whom he
calls Pa, an older brother, Gus and an older sister, Angie. Richard was seven when his
mother died. I admire Richard because of his compassion, his talent in poetry writing and his
strength to stand by his principles.
I admire Richard because he has great compassion and love for animals. in the beginning of
the story, his father takes him and his brother, Gus on hunt. Richard does not like hunting,
not even small creatures such as rabbit. his father wants him to shoot his first deer. Richard
aims at the deer but misses the shot on purpose. he refuses to shoot the deer because he
feels that he has no right to kill the deer. Richard remembered when he was younger, he
followed his grandfather, his father and Gus for hunting. Richard felt very sad and almost
cried when his grandfather killed a deer. I also like animals and I think Richard did was
admirable. animals deserve to be respected and loved by humans. it is really painful to see
animals being killed especially the wildlife. Wildlife should be protected or else they will
extinct one day.
I also admire Richard because he is so talented in poetry writing. from an early age, he
transforms his childhood emotion into poems, which he hides from his family. one day, his
teacher, Mrs Hansen , reads out a poem by a famous poet in the class. this is the beginning
of a friendship between Richard and Joyce Kilmer. inspired by Mr. Kilmer's poem, he decides
to write to him. Richard tells Mr Kilmer of his fear in letting people know that he writes poetry.
Mr Kilmer tells him that being afraid is part of life. He also tells Richard that he needs to
overcome his fears. Mr. Kilmer then advises him to let people know if he really cares about
poetry. as a result, he decided to let his family know he writes poetry. Richard also tells his
teacher Mrs Hansen that he writes poetry. Mrs Hansen was very impressed and loved
reading his poems. I admire Richard because he has a passion for writing. Writing poetry is
a good way to express our feelings and opinions.
Another reason why I admire Richard is beause he is able to stand by his principles. his
support and friendship with Hannah Schermer has cost him his friendship with most other
students. no one wants to be his friend because he signed the card to show sympathy for the
Schermers. He also declines the role of Doughboy. He does not let other students' treatment
and malicious remarks bother him. when Pa tells him that the Schermers are not one of
them, he explains that the Schermers pay their taxes like other Americans. His father
believes that Richard should not side with the Schermers but should support those who have
lived there longer. He tells his father that is not right. he believes the Schermers are innocent
and they should be treated just like any other Americans. It is important to stand by one's
principles just like Richard. we need to stand firm with what we believe is right and not easily
influenced by others. We should be fair to everyone.

In conclusion, Richard is a young boy who has great compassion for animals, talented in
poetry writing and has strong life principles. Richard is a character that we should all admire.
