CourseDescription:Flightmechanicsdealswiththeinteractionbetweenvehiclesandtheatmosphere.
Problemsinthisareaincludeproducingmoreefficientdesigns,improvingthecontrolsystemsforaircraft,
reducingaircraftvibrationandnoise,etc.Thecoursecoversaircraftperformanceduringtakeoff,climb,level
flightandlanding.Aircraftstabilityandstaticequilibriumincludingtheeffectofcomponents,aircraftcontrol
surfacesanddevices,andtrimmedequilibriumconditionanditseffectonperformance.
AssumedBackground:
ThecourseisprovidedforstudentsintheMechanical&Aerospace,Electrical&AerospaceandSoftware
Systems&AerospaceEngineeringdegreeprograms.Moststudentsarelikelytohavesomebackgroundin
eitherfluiddynamicsorelectrical/softwarerelatedmaterial,butprobablynotboth.Thusthecoursewillpresent
introductoryaerodynamicsmaterialforthenonfluidsstudents,andtargettedMATLAB/SIMULINKmaterialfor
thenonelectrical/softwarestudent.Thecourseisheavilygearedtowardstheflightmechanicscomponent,and
hencethenonfluidsstudentswillneedtomakeaconcertedefforttolearntheintroductoryaerodynamics
material.

1.2CourseIntroduction
Flightmechanicsdealswiththeinteractionbetweenvehiclesandtheatmosphere.Problemsinthisareainclude
producingmoreefficientdesigns,improvingthecontrolsystemsforaircraft,reducingaircraftvibrationand
noise,etc.Thecoursecoversaircraftperformanceduringtakeoff,climb,levelflightandlanding.Aircraft
stabilityandstaticequilibriumincludingtheeffectofcomponents,aircraftcontrolsurfacesanddevices,and
trimmedequilibriumconditionanditseffectonperformance.Theavionicspartofthecourse,taughtinparallel,
coversaircraftguidanceandnavigationinstrumentsandsystems,theglobalpositioningsystem,flightcontrol
systemsandautopilots,andtheavionicsrequirementsofUAVs(UnpilotedAerialVehicles).

2.1CourseAims
TheaimsofAERO4200FlightMechanicsandAvionicsaretointroducethefundamentalinteractionsbetween
aircraftsurfacesandtheairthroughwhichtheyfly,interactionswhichleadtotheproductionand/orlossoflift
anddrag,andwhichdeterminetheperformanceandstabilityoftheaircraft.Thisconstitutesflightmechanics.
Inordertoflysuccessfully,controlsystemsandalgorithmsareemployedthatmanagetheinteractionsand
thereforetheperformanceandstability.Thesesystemsandalgorithms,andotherelectricalsystemswithwhich
modernaircraftareequipped,constituteavionics.Theavionicscomponentofthecoursewillsupplementthe
mainpartofthecourse(flightmechanics).Intheareasofbothflightmechanicsandavionics,thecoursewill
provideintroductorylevellearning,fromwhichthestudentcanappreciatetheessenceofthesubjectand
proceedtofurtherinvestigationasneeded.
