Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 General Information

This document describes installation, license handling, operation and maintenance of
AdvaCommand 1.8 for UNIX Extensions.

1.1.1 Software Version Designation

The software for the AdvaCommand 1.8 for UNIX Extensions is distributed on CD
with the following description and designation:

Station Backup On File

1.1.3 Hardware requirements

1.1.3.1 Extension 1
Station Backup On File requires a minimum of 650 Mbyte free space on the local hard
disk. Depending of the size of user data (e.g. number of displays), the size requirement
will increase. A typical system requires between 1.0 - 1.7 Gbyte space.
History Backup requires approx. 270 Mbyte free space on the local hard disk with the
default configuration of AdvaInform History log data base. Increasing the log data base
affects the History Backup with the same amount of size.
In a standard installation of Advant Station, not all disk size is allocated. How to
increase size of the defined logical volumes is described in Section 5.1 Configuration
of hard disk.

The Station Backup On File makes the Operator Station independent of tape devices.
Backups can be taken in on-line mode, i.e. you do not have to set the Operator Station
in configuration mode to perform a backup.
Some restore alternatives must be done in the Backup Restore mode. Choose
Backup Restore mode when the window Workstation mode appears on the screen
of the Operator Station at startup.
Backup can be initiated in a remote host from the local host, meanwhile restore is
always performed in the local host.

Figure 4-22. Backup/restore overview

Backup:

A backup file is always created in the host where the backup is executed. A backup can
be started manually or cyclically as:
1.

Backup of local host.

2.

Backup of remote host, initiated from local host.

Storage:

For further storage, a backup file can be treated as follows:

1.

Storage in local host.

2.

Storage in common host (transfer between Operator Stations).

3.

Storage in PC (transfer to PC, initiated from PC).

4.

Storage on CD/DVD in PC (transfer to PC, initiated from PC).

Restore:

Restore can only be done in the local host. The Operator Station must be started in
Configuration Mode to restore files except for Interactive Restore. The following
alternatives to access the backup file are possible:

4-20

1.

Restore own host from backup file located in own host.

2.

Restore own host from backup file located on a CD/DVD in own host.

3.

Restore own host from backup file located in the remote common host.
