Students have previously been exposed to narrative writing and have


learnt the components of a narrative text which aligns with the elements
of a retell.

The purpose of this lesson is to introduce how to retell a story to the


students.

For students that are more advanced in literacy I will provide two images of questions
for the roll and retell activity. Students are able to select from both photos. For the
students more capable they are able to challenge themselves and for the students who
are struggling they still have the opportunity to answer the less challenging questions.

Introduction:

An image will be presented on the smartboard. I will read the rhyme to the students that
explains what a retell is.

After reading the rhyme I will then explain what a retell is.

A dreaming story will be read to the students


After the story has been read by following the I Do, We do and You Do model I
will then identify the main areas of the story that are crucial for a retell
(setting, characters, problem, resolution and conclusion)
Another dreaming story will then be read to the students (asking them to think
about the components such a setting, characters, problem, solution and
conclusion)
After the story has been read the students will then work in pairs or a group
and participate in a retell activity.
This activity will be on the smartboard and it requires the students to roll the
dice and then answer a question in regards to the story they just listened to.

Lesson conclusion: (How will you summarise the learning and relate it to the lesson

Once the students have completed the activity they will then meet on
the mat to have a class discussion

Who can name something you have to include in your retell?


Can someone tell me their favourite part of either of the stories
Who can remember what comes after a problem?

Students were engaged


From the activity at the end it was clear that the students understood how to clearly
retell a story
My time management was not the best and my conclusion had to be left out but I then
used my conclusion as revision at the start of my next lesson
Reading the dream time story was very effective and the students all enjoy discussing
the story after.
