FOREWORD
Priority mail labels are no longer for mailing purposes. They have recently become
a movement of artists finding an inexpensive, mobile, and disposable way to showcase their artwork. Everywhere I go, I notice these stickers, their differing techniques
and styles only lumped together by the fact that they are done on the same canvas:
US governmentissued mailing labels. I've seen them on the F-train from Brooklyn
to Queens, on lampposts in Los Angeles, and on famous statues in London. Theyve
become a pivotal part of the modern street art scene, whether the viewer is looking
for them or not.
One day I stumbled across a post-office sticker that had the most amazing artwork
on it, slapped on the back of a stop sign. I see them everywhere because, obviously,
I am obsessed with them, but this particular one intrigued me. It was so thought
provoking, so passionate, and so compelling that I had to have it. I nearly scraped
it off the sign and ran home with it, though of course that would have missed the
point of Label 228 as art.
I still don't know who put that sticker on that stop sign but everyday I wonder if that
individual will ever sell his artwork, or at least show it somewhere other than stop
signs and street lamps, where it will become weathered and wash away within
weeks. And in thinking about how to provide a more permanent platform for this
work, I came up with the idea to have people from all over the world send me Label
228 stickers with their original artwork to compile into a book for publication. I figure if an artist is willing to take the time and effort to create their masterpiece and
only show it illegally to passersby on the back of a stop sign, then why wouldnt they
be willing to send some pieces in the mail to an anonymous art-book compiler?
When I invited people to contribute, I didnt give them any guidelines to follow. I
simply put the word out there through various internet outlets, and like the labels
themselves, this book idea took on a life of its own. I gave people the freedom to
do with the labels what they pleased, and accordingly, I received every kind of painting, drawing, stencil, and poetry one could squeeze onto these tiny, rectangular
stickers. My only requirement was absolute freedom for the artist, which mirrors the
idea of the book itself. Absolute freedom to say or draw or paint anything they want
on the stickers and send them in. Absolute freedomwhich these days is almost
nonexistent.
