Lesson Content
What Standards (national
or state) relate to this
lesson?
(You should include ALL
applicable standards. Rarely
do teachers use just one:
theyd never get through
them all.)
Essential Understanding
Objectives- What are you
teaching?

SS.3.C.1.1 Explain the purpose and need for government.

SS.3.C.3.1 Identify the levels of government (local, state, federal).
SS.3.C.3.2 Describe how government is organized at the local level.
What is a citizens role and why is it important?

Students will be able to determine the importance of all roles in our community.
Students will become experts on what it means to be a citizen.
Students will be able to explain how their local government system works.

Rationale

Evaluation Plan- How will

you know students have
mastered your objectives?

What Content Knowledge

is necessary for a teacher

These objectives are designed to test the students knowledge of what it means to be a
citizen. The information that the students will learn is important for them to know as
citizens in their communities. My reasons for teaching my lesson this way is to introduce
the information in a way that they can relate to. They can make connections with the
scenario given to them and even think of ways they can help their own community.
Formative and Summative Assessments: Students will be separated into groups of four or
five. Each group will need to create a visual that includes some text to explain what it
means to be a citizen. Students will read their description and then they will be collected
at the end of the lesson for the teacher to assess their understanding.

The teacher must have knowledge of the branches of a local government discussed in

the workbook. It is important to know what duties each branch is responsible for. The
teacher must also be an expert on the scenario given to the students about their local
community. They must be familiar with what it means to be a citizen in a community.
Students will be taught about a citizens part in society in their workbook prior to the
group activity. The group activity will act as a review of the content we discuss. It will also
give the students a chance to test their knowledge of the subject at hand.
My classroom has a mix of high and low level students. I have 3 English Language
Learners (ELL), one of which is very limited in his English. I have previously taught a
vague overview of this content, so the class already has some knowledge of the topic we
will be addressing.

What misconceptions
might students have about
this content?

Students may be confused about the scenario that we will be addressing. They might
think that we are actually sending petitions and addressing the government, but it is only
a scenario. I will have a moment at the end of the lesson where the class can suggest
local issues in their community that we can contact our local government about.
Lesson Implementation

Teaching Methods
(What teaching method(s) will
you use during this lesson?
Examples include guided
release, 5 Es, direct
instruction, lecture,
demonstration, partner word,
etc.)

Step-by-Step Plan
(What exactly do you plan to
do in teaching this lesson? Be
thorough. Act as if you needed

Class Discussion: The teacher will introduce the topic and group activity for the lesson.
The class as a whole will review the workbook material they read earlier in the day.
Group Work: Students will work in groups to address the essential question given to
them. They will explain work to create a poster that shows what they think a citizens role
is, and why they are important.

We have previously discussed the importance of all roles in a job or

community. Think back on Jill and what she did to help her
community. What is a citizens role in a community? What makes
that role important? Include support from the text.

Think back on the text Pops Bridge. In what ways can we connect
our essential question and mini-activity to that stories theme? Are
they similar? How so?

our roles?
Release students to brainstorm what they consider a citizens role to
be.
Students will create a poster that represents what they think is the
answer to the essential question.
Show using a picture (graphic) and labels, captions and text.
Allow some time for each group to quickly share an idea from their
poster.
What will you do if

a student struggles with the content?

We will dig deeper into previous knowledge that we have gained from other
texts used in class. This will allow them to make text-to-text connections and
create more thoughts on the essential question.

What will you do if

a student masters the content quickly?

Students can take their thinking one step further. The teacher will ask them to
think about their own role in their community. Why is their role important? How
can we contribute more?

Meeting your students

needs as people and as
learners

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
backgrounds of your students?
The students are all part of a community, whether it be cultural, educational,
etc. This lesson connects with how their community works as a whole. The text
also mentions discussing our school community and government. This relates
to them directly.

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
This lesson directly connects to the local community. It brings up the
discussion of how we play a part in our communities and what makes us a
citizen of our community. We also discuss why roles of our citizens are
important overall to our community.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
challenge during this lesson (enrichment)?
These students will be asked to think about how they play a part in our
community. The teacher will ask them to use Jills story as an example, and
brainstorm ideas for how we can take part.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
language support?
These students will be allowed to use visuals to express their thinking. They
will also be put into groups with students who have shown they work well
together and encourage them to join discussions.

Accommodations (If
needed)

K.A.- this student will need to be talked to directly about the assignment because of
language barriers.
