The National Resource Center for Asian Languages hosted their first Symposium for Community
College Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese language instructors. The purpose of the symposium was to
welcome community college language instructors from Southern California for a free day of learning and to
expand on the integration of cultural component outlined in the Articulation of Agreement between California
State Universities and community college language programs.
Director Natalie Tran began the day by welcoming all participants, including visiting scholars from
Shanghai Normal University, to the symposium and outlining the days activities. Following the introduction, Dr.
Satoko Kakihara provided an overview of the Articulation Agreement and explained the relevance of cultural
integration within language courses. Participants of each of the languages separated into breakout groups and
had the opportunity to learn strategies for incorporating culture into language lessons by multiple CSUF
professors, including Dr. Jack Liu, Dr. Setsue Shibata, Dr. Meiko Shimura, Dr. Kazuha Watanabe, and Mr. Dung
Tran, a renowned expert in the Vietnamese language. The symposium concluded with a certificate ceremony
wherein the certificates were presented to each participant by CSUFs College of Education dean, Dr. Lisa
Kirtman. With positive feedback from about 50 participants, NRCAL is planning on organizing many more
future professional development opportunities for community college language instructors.
