Editors Column
Gentlemen, here we are entering the month of November. It is quite a month, with
many things taking place as we move more deeply into Fall and approach the season
of Winter. This November we will experience a presidential election, the results of
which will please some and devastate others. We will look forward to the wondrous
and uniquely American holiday of Thanksgiving, during which families gather to
share banquets and offer thanks for the good fortune that has graced them during the
year. An added bonus of Thanksgiving is the recognition of the Friday after
Thanksgiving as a legal holiday and the start of the frenzy of Christmas shopping.
But there is an even more important day in November, in fact one of the most
significant days of the year, but one which receives only a fraction of the attention it
deserves. That day is Veterans Day. The United States of America is the greatest
nation in the history of civilization, and it remains so because of our Veterans, those
men and women who have joined and served in our Armed Forces. Veterans come in
all colors, sizes and shapes. So many of those who served went through absolute hell
and incredible sacrifice to defend our nation against all of its enemies, both foreign
and domestic. Sadly many, many thousands of United States military members paid
the ultimate price and gave their lives to preserve America from its enemies.
If you look at the membership of the Old Timers, we are blessed with a wide variety
of Veterans. Some served in World War II as part of The Greatest Generation, which
engaged in the most massive armed confrontation against the forces of evil in the
history of the world. These Veterans defeated the horrific Empire of Japan and the
diabolical Third Reich of Nazi Germany, and in so doing preserved the United States
1

of America as the land of freedom and the homeland of the just and brave. Veterans
of the wars in Korea, Vietnam, and the Middle East have continued to keep America
free and proud.
Yet our Veterans sacrifice and service is given only perfunctory recognition.
Veterans Day is not just a day off work or school, which is how far too many in our
society view it. It should be a day for somber reflection and boundless gratitude for
those Americans who put it all on the line in service to our nation so that we can be
free, so that we can exercise the rights granted to us under the Constitution, so that
we can pursue those God-given gifts of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
To the Veterans in the Old Timers and everywhere and to those on active duty, we
stand at attention and salute you and thank you for what you did and are doing in
service to the United States of America. May God bless and keep you. You are
America at its finest.
Old Timers vs Alzheimers
Guys, lets keep up the fight!! Remember to kick in a buck or two as you buy your
raffle tickets at our monthly dinners. Every little bit helps in the quest for a cure or
an effective treatment. We have received word from Treasurer Ken Mooney that at
the October dinner, $111 was donated, despite sparse attendance, and we are at $617
in total donations so far.. The October proceeds will be forwarded to the Alzheimers
Association by Ken. Men, we are doing great!! Thanks to all who donated!!
Get Your Newsletter by E-Mail
The number of members who have signed up for e-mail delivery of their monthly
newsletter is 92, and we are hoping for a lot more. We would urge those members
who have e-mail to sign up by sending me a message at insplfl225@hotmail.com and we
will add you to the list. Its a real cost saver for the SFBOTA, and on top of that, you
get the photos in the news in color (in some cases thats not a good thing!).

You Know Youre an Old Timer When

the dog you had as a kid died, you buried it in the backyard, and it turned to oil.
---your grandkids really think you fought in the Revolutionary War.
---you think a cell phone is what you call your lawyer on after you have been
booked.
---you are working in your garden and you realize that you are older than the dirt.
Overheard
Old Timers Nick Poppin, Joe Marino and Bobbie Mitchell were in front of the Irish
Cultural Center before a dinner when a reporter doing Man on The Street interviews
approached and posed this question to our three stalwarts---What do you think is
the greatest invention, and why? Nick said The Jet Airplane, because it is so fast
it has made the whole world easier to reach. Joe said The Television, because we
can now watch history as it is being made instead of having to wait for days or weeks
for information.
Bobbie Mitchell looked the reporter dead in the eye and said The Thermos Bottle.
The reporter was stunned and asked Whats so great about a thermos bottle? So
Bobbie explained Well, when you put something hot in a thermos bottle, it stays hot
all day long. And when you put something cold in it, it stays cold all day long. The
reporter asked Whats so great about that?? And Bobbie scornfully replied How
does it know? The reporter quit his job.

---Who was the only major leaguer who played at least 500 games for the Astros,
Expos, Mets and Tigers? (Believe it or not, Rusty Staub.)
This Months Questions
---Who was the first player in Major League Baseball to have his number retired, and
what was the number?
---Who set the record for most hits in a Major League season, how many hits did he
get, and in what year?
Think About This
The secret to giving a great speech? Have a very good beginning, and have a very
good ending, and make those two things as close together as possible. (Adapted from
famous comedian George Burns) Too bad that so many politicians never use Georges
magic formula! Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah!
And as Rodney Dangerfield said, his luck was so bad that he once bought a cemetery
to make some money, and people stopped dying!
