Editors Column
Gentlemen, here we are entering the month of November. It is quite a month, with
many things taking place as we move more deeply into Fall and approach the season
of Winter. This November we will experience a presidential election, the results of
which will please some and devastate others. We will look forward to the wondrous
and uniquely American holiday of Thanksgiving, during which families gather to
share banquets and offer thanks for the good fortune that has graced them during the
year. An added bonus of Thanksgiving is the recognition of the Friday after
Thanksgiving as a legal holiday and the start of the frenzy of Christmas shopping.
But there is an even more important day in November, in fact one of the most
significant days of the year, but one which receives only a fraction of the attention it
deserves. That day is Veterans Day. The United States of America is the greatest
nation in the history of civilization, and it remains so because of our Veterans, those
men and women who have joined and served in our Armed Forces. Veterans come in
all colors, sizes and shapes. So many of those who served went through absolute hell
and incredible sacrifice to defend our nation against all of its enemies, both foreign
and domestic. Sadly many, many thousands of United States military members paid
the ultimate price and gave their lives to preserve America from its enemies.
If you look at the membership of the Old Timers, we are blessed with a wide variety
of Veterans. Some served in World War II as part of The Greatest Generation, which
engaged in the most massive armed confrontation against the forces of evil in the
history of the world. These Veterans defeated the horrific Empire of Japan and the
diabolical Third Reich of Nazi Germany, and in so doing preserved the United States
1
of America as the land of freedom and the homeland of the just and brave. Veterans
of the wars in Korea, Vietnam, and the Middle East have continued to keep America
free and proud.
Yet our Veterans sacrifice and service is given only perfunctory recognition.
Veterans Day is not just a day off work or school, which is how far too many in our
society view it. It should be a day for somber reflection and boundless gratitude for
those Americans who put it all on the line in service to our nation so that we can be
free, so that we can exercise the rights granted to us under the Constitution, so that
we can pursue those God-given gifts of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
To the Veterans in the Old Timers and everywhere and to those on active duty, we
stand at attention and salute you and thank you for what you did and are doing in
service to the United States of America. May God bless and keep you. You are
America at its finest.
Old Timers vs Alzheimers
Guys, lets keep up the fight!! Remember to kick in a buck or two as you buy your
raffle tickets at our monthly dinners. Every little bit helps in the quest for a cure or
an effective treatment. We have received word from Treasurer Ken Mooney that at
the October dinner, $111 was donated, despite sparse attendance, and we are at $617
in total donations so far.. The October proceeds will be forwarded to the Alzheimers
Association by Ken. Men, we are doing great!! Thanks to all who donated!!
