Professional Writing

& Information Design

The professional writing and information design (PWID) major at Cedarville University
prepares students for successful careers as writers and communication specialists. Students
learn to analyze the purpose, context, and audience that affects the way they write and
design. Our students gain the professional skills needed to negotiate current work contexts
for both standard documentation and web content. They will also aquire the analytical and
problem-solving skills necessary to keep pace with technological and cultural changes. We
love community. The professional writing program will not only help you develop into an
articulate and reflective writing professional, but it will also prepare you to build relationships
and positively influence your future environments, vital to the success of all organizations.

Future Careers

I am a 2014 graduate of the PWID
program. I currently work as a

Technical Writer & Trainer at the

University of Central Arkansas. As

the positions title implies, I

develop help documentation so

that university faculty, staff, and
students can use technology better on campus. I also

organize and deliver training sessions on technologyrelated topics for faculty and staff. My advice to all

PWID students is to never underestimate the power of

good writing. It can open more doors than you think.

Student Spotlight
Carrie Clauson
Creative writing is my
first love. Through very
hard work, I have placed
in about fifteen national
or local essay and
poetry competitions
since my sophomore
year of high school. I
think thats why I fit right in with PWID.
Brochures and the text on web pages and
business reports seem and, unfortunately,
often are lifeless. Striving to incorporate my
creativity into every project we have done has
challenged and stimulated my creative
abilities in a different way than creative writing
ever could. Working unto the Lord with the
specific gifts he has given me, I feel that I can
influence and improve the professional
writing field with my unique perspective. That
is a truly fulfilling.

Society of
Professional Writers
Every student of the Professional Writing
program is a member of the Society for
Professional Writing (SPW), the official student
organization for the major. The officers plan
field trips, fellowship-building activities, and
professional development events to foster
friendships and unity within the major. These
events include internship reports and portfolio
presentations. In addition, during the anual
spring trip, the students visit businesses to
engage with writing professionals.
