Introduction:
The IMO Committee have approved the amendments to the SOLAS Regulation that requires the
mandatorycarriageofabridgenavigationwatchalarmsystemforthesubsequentadoptionatthe
MSC 86. (Amendments to the SOLAS Reg. V/19 Carriage requirements for a bridge navigational
watchalarmsystem)
Background:AbridgewatchalarmsystemisadevicewhichtriggersanalarmifanOfficeronWatch
(OOW) becomes incapable of performing the OOWs duties. IMO had adopted the performance
standard as MSC. 128 (75) and there are ships which have already installed the equipment on a
voluntarybasis.Currently,therearetwotypes,i.e.,onewhichrequiresthewatchofficertopressa
buttoninaninterval(ifhefailstodoso,ittriggersthealarm),oranother,whichdetectsmovements
ofthewatchofficer,usingthemotionsensortechnology.(Sofarasthesensorfindsmovementsof
thewatchofficerthealarmwillnotgooff).
Application:Theamendmentsstipulateasfollows:
1stJuly2011onorafterforallnewbuildsof150gtorover(keellaybase)
Shipsconstructedpriorto1stJuly2011willhavetofittheBNWASbythe1stsurveyafter:
1stJuly2012forcargoshipsof3000gtoroverandallpassengerships.
1stJuly2013forcargoshipsof500gtoroverbutlessthan3000gt.
1stJuly2014forcargoshipsofbetween150gtoroverbutlessthan500gt.
Theserequirementsalsoapplytoshipsnotengagedoninternationalvoyages.

4.1.2 Operationalsequenceofindicationsandalarms
4.1.2.1Onceoperational,thealarmsystemshouldremaindormantforaperiodofbetween3and
12min(Td).
4.1.2.2Attheendofthisdormantperiod,thealarmsystemshouldinitiateavisualindicationonthe
bridge.
4.1.2.3Ifnotreset,theBNWASshouldadditionallysoundafirststageaudiblealarmonthebridge
15safterthevisualindicationisinitiated.
4.1.2.4Ifnotreset,theBNWASshouldadditionallysoundasecondstageremoteaudiblealarmin
thebackupofficersand/orMasterslocation15safterthefirststageaudiblealarmis
initiated.
4.1.2.5Ifnotreset,theBNWASshouldadditionallysoundathirdstageremoteaudiblealarmatthe
locationsoffurthercrewmemberscapableoftakingcorrectiveactions90safterthesecond
stageremoteaudiblealarmisinitiated.

4.1.3 Resetfunction
4.1.3.1Itshouldnotbepossibletoinitiatetheresetfunctionorcancelanyaudiblealarmfromany
device,equipmentorsystemnotphysicallylocatedinareasofthebridgeprovidingproper
lookout.
4.1.3.2Theresetfunctionshould,byasingleoperatoraction,cancelthevisualindicationandall
audiblealarmsandinitiateafurtherdormantperiod.Iftheresetfunctionisactivatedbefore
theendofthedormantperiod,theperiodshouldbereinitiatedtorunforitsfullduration
fromthetimeofthereset.
4.1.3.3Toinitiatetheresetfunction,aninputrepresentingasingleoperatoractionbytheOOWis
required.Thisinputmaybegeneratedbyresetdevicesforminganintegralpartofthe
BNWASorbyexternalinputsfromotherequipmentcapableofregisteringphysicalactivity
andmentalalertnessoftheOOW.
4.1.3.4Acontinuousactivationofanyresetdeviceshouldnotprolongthedormantperiodorcause
asuppressionofthesequenceofindicationsandalarms.
4.1.4 Emergencycallfacility
Meansmaybeprovidedonthebridgetoimmediatelyactivatethesecond,andsubsequently
third,stageremoteaudiblealarmsbymeansofanEmergencyCallpushbuttonorsimilar.

RemoteAcknowledgePanel(RAP).
DuringthedormantperiodpressingtheRESETANDTESTpadontheMAPwillbrieflyilluminateboth
theRESETpadsandtheBRIDGEALERTindicationtoacknowledgetheaction.
PressingtheWATCHALERTRESETpadontheRAPhasthesameresult.
EMERGENCYCALL:
PressandholdthePUSHFOREMERGENCYpadforaminimumof1.5seconds.Thiswillinitiatethe
alarmsequenceattheOFFICERALERTstagebutdisablesthePIR,andthenproceedingasperthe
normaltimelinesequence.
Note!ThatonlybypressingtheRESETANDTESTpadontheMAPortheWATCHALERTRESETpadon
theRAPwillcanceltheemergencycallasthePIRwillhavebeendisabled.
BRIDGEALERTTEST:
PresstheRESETANDTESTpadforaminimumof1.5seconds.TheBRIDGEALERTisinitiatedforas
longasthetouchpadisheldpressed.SYSTEMACTIVE&SYSTEMFAULTindicationsarealsolit.The

OncetheMEUhasbeenconfiguredthecoverandpadlockinplacetheCaptainistoswitchthe
systemintotherequiredMODEandremoveboththepadlockandMODEselectionkeysandkeep
theminasecureplacetopreventanyunauthorisedchangesortampering.
ALERTsequencewithoutAcknowledgements:
Onceoperational,theBridgeNavigationalWatchAlarmSystem(BNWAS)willremaindormantfora
periodofbetween3and12min(Td).
Attheendofthisdormantperiod(Td),theBNWASwillinitiateavisualindicationonlyonthebridge
i.e.theRESETANDTESTpadandtheBRIDGEALERTindicationwillflashonandofffor15seconds.
Ifwithinthis15secondperiod(Td+15sec)theBNWASisnotacknowledged,thesystemwill
additionallysoundthe1ststageaudiblealarmonthebridgeonlyforafurther15seconds.

Ifthe1 stagealarmisnotacknowledged(Td+30sec),theBNWASwilladvancetothe2ndstage
remotealarmconditionwheretheOFFICERALERT/WATCHALERTwhichisanaudibleandvisual
alarminthedesignatedOfficersand/orMasterslocation.
Ifthe2ndstagealarmisnotacknowledged(Td+120/210sec),theBNWASwilladvancefurtherandgo
intothe3rdstageremotealarmconditionwheretheCREWALERT/WATCHALERTwhichisanaudible
andvisualalarmatlocationswherecrewmemberscanbealertedtotakecorrectiveactions.
Ifthe3rdstagealarmisnotacknowledged(Td+240/420sec),theBNWASwilladvancefurtherand
gointothe4thstageremotealarmconditionwherethereisaDryContactClosurewhichcanbeused
toactivatetheSSAS,sendanEmailthroughtheS.E.A.S.orputtheengineintosafemode.
UNACKNOWLEDGEDALARMTRANSFERsequence:
BNWASdetectsanUNACKNOWLEDGEDalarm,andENABLEstheTRANSFER.
Whenanunacknowledgedalarmarrivesandistransferred,theEMERGENCYCallisimmediately
initiatedandthesystemgoesstraightintothealarmsequenceatthe2ndstageortheOFFICERALERT
(Td+30sec).
PressingaBNWASRESETtouchpadontheMAPorRAPclearstheemergencyrequestmutesthe
audiblealarm&disablesfurthertransfers.
Thisdisablingisnecessarytopreventtriggeringtheemergencycallwhilstthebridgeismanned.
TheBRIDGEALERTontheMAPandRAPwillcontinuetogivethevisiblealertuntilallalarmsare
acknowledgedattheirsourceequipment.
Ifanewunacknowledgedalarmarriveswhilsttransferisdisabledthenewalarmwillnottriggera
newBNWASaudiblealertasamemberoftheshipsstaffis/areinattendanceonthebridge.
IntheeventoftheNMEAdataflowstoppingbythesourceequipmentbeingswitchedoffatimeout
of32secondsisusedtoclearthatparticularalarmstatus.

Priortofittinganyunitintoitsproposedlocationallowancesshouldbemadetotheeaseofrunning
thecablesandwhethertheyarerequiredtobehiddenorallowedinview.
Beforecuttingthecablesensurethateachendcomfortablyreachesitsterminationpointwithat
leastanother30cmspareateachend.
1. FitBNWASMEUinasuitablelocationnearorinthewheelhousetakingintoaccountthe
easeofaccessforrunningthecables.
2. LocateaspareswitchboardACcircuitandrunthe2corescreened1.5mmcablefromthe
switchboardtotheBNWASMEU.
3. TheMonitorandAlertPanel(MAP)willrequire2lengthsofthe6corecablefromtheMEU.
Locateasuitablepositionifpossiblenearthecharttableorthemanoeuvringconsolewhere
whenthevisualalertbecomesactiveitwilleasilyattracttheattentionoftheOOW.
4. FortheRemoteAlertPanels(RAP)units;asingle6corecableouttothelocationofRAP1to
RAP2andthenRAP3etc.TheseunitscanbelocatednearaRADAR/ARPA,workstation,
AutopilotsteeringpositionoranywheretheOOWwhilstmaintainingalookoutcaneasily
observethevisualalert.
5. ThePIRunitsarebestlocatedinacornerawayfromanyventilationoutputtocoverasmany
workstationsaspossibletakingintoaccounttheyhavefieldcoverageof90degreesanda
rangeof12metres.Theyareconnectedinseriessimilartoasecuritysystem.
6. TheWatchAlertPanels(WAP)unitsforthe2ndstagealert;asingle6corecableouttothe
locationoftheWAP1Captainsbedroom,WAP2totheCh/Officersbedroom,WAP3tothe
2ndOfficerscabinandtheWAP4the3rdOfficerscabin.
7. TheWatchAlertPanels(WAP)forthe3rdstagealertasingle6corecableouttothelocation
e.g.oftheshipsoffice,officersmessorgymnasiumetc.
