SCHOOL TOURS

CHECKLIST
For Pre-K Families
School tours are a great opportunity for your family to learn more about a school's
academic program and to find the right learning environment for your child.
SCHOOL TOURS CHECKLIST
Determine what's the most important to your child and family.
Consider academics, sports, arts, and other activities, as well as
transportation and before/after care.
Visit more than one school. Make a list of all the schools you
want to visit. Visiting several schools will provide an opportunity
for you to compare different learning environments.
Contact the school to schedule a tour.
During MNPS School Options' time period, all schools will have
"Walk Through Tuesdays" for you to visit, explore and ask
questions. Those dates are: October 18 & 25, November 1, 15,
22 & 29, and January 24 & 31. The times are from 10:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m.. Please contact schools to confirm times and dates or
if you need a tour outside of the times provided.
When you visit the school make observations about the school's environment, and discover how
you and your child feel in the school.
Hear the interactions between teachers and students, as well as among the students themselves.
Ask to observe a classroom, so you can get a feel of the teacher in the classroom and how
they work with students.
Visit multiple grade level classrooms, not just kindergarten classrooms.
Ask questions, such as: What type of learning environment does the school provide? What are the
school's goals? How does the school perform academically? What are the school's strengths?
Once you narrowed down the schools you are interested in, consider visiting them more than once
and at different times of the day.
Ask for materials before you leave a school (i.e. class schedules, handbooks. newsletters. etc.).
Take notes during and after your tour, so you can refer to your notes afterwards.
