Campus journalists have made a difference in our society. Without these people, there would be no
new information shared about these world were living. With the use of a pen and a paper, new
knowledge are published every day. But as time goes by, improvement of technology are observed.
Before, journalists use pen and a paper to write infos and it takes a pretty long time to publish. And
now, modern technology kicked in. Laptops, tablets, smartphones and anything involving technology
are used. And with a little help of the internet, facts are easily shared all over the world with just one
click of a button. This is Campus Journalism in the 21st Century. But the question is, what are their
real role in our society? Are they just made to inform everyone?
As campus journalists, they are expected to be watchful of their school programs, thrusts and
activities. They must advocate for the good of the studentry and not just for the few elite ones. They
must possess fair judgment and good moral values so that what comes out in their write-ups are not
based on dreams and fanciful ideas.
With great power, comes with great responsiblity, a quote from the movie Spiderman. Just like this
quote journalists have the power to give people information which are immediately accepted and
trusted by the public. With this power comes the responsibility of making sure that all can receive
information. And by not being a slave of technology.

Heres to the campus journalists out there.

The sound made while I was browsing through the social media. In the midst of the busy street Im
walking in, my head is tilted down focusing on a thing I already made as my hobby every day. Im
looking down my phone. Even though I have my handbook with me, anyway, this book is exclusive
for school purposes; I have chosen my phone over it. But these practices Im doing are not-so-new at
all. I bet every student nowadays do this. Welcome to the 21 st century Campus Journalists.
From a quill, ink, and a paper to phones, tablets, and laptops, we can say that journalism had
already gone a big difference. Campus Journalists are supposed to be the critics of campuses, they
must be advocates for the good studentry and not just for the few, elite ones. Technology nowadays
is a basis for fame, the number of likes you get on social media defines who you are. The pen is
mightier than the sword, but today, it seems like journalists would prefer to use gadgets instead of a
pen nor a sword. The 21st century journalists shows a picture of a technology-dependent one, they
are not armored with pen anymore, they are now into gadgets. I am really curios on how technology
poisoned the minds of some of us journalists. I sometimes imagine a day without a strong wireless
fidelity connection, I gave up imagining.
To the 21st century campus journalists, let us be the model of the new generation, let us be armored
with a pen, let ourselves traverse the unchartered seas towards this century, and not be a slave of
the modern technology.

Click! Click! Click! The sound made. But this time, it is not the sound of the tapping of my phone, but
the sound from my pen as I write my thoughts to my co-journalists.

Dr. Policarpio Duavis, guest speaker for the Online Journalism contest, discusses the theme,
The role of 21st Campus Journalism in Upholding Good Governance, Leadership and Transparency
at Hilongos Western Gym on November 14, 2015.
Dr. Duavis explained the meaning of good governance, leadership and transparency. Good
governance includes democratic process and equality in opportunity. He discussed the elements of
the three words.
He shared the meaning of those words so that writers could understand its elements and its
meaning.

How can you taste the true flavour of a fruit if it doesnt undergo the proper process of ripening?
For the past three years, Philippines is one of the Asian countries that has a 10-year educational
system. Based on some research, international test results revealed that we often come at the tail
end in the exams compared to the other countries. We Filipinos are known to be a tight competitor in
the international community, to enhance the quality of our education they believe that the
implementation of K-12 plan in the Philippine Basic Curriculum is the key for the development of our
country. According to the Government, the K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of
basic education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of
Senior High School [SHS]) to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop
lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development,
employment, and entrepreneurship. President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino stated You are given ten
years to take in, to chew on, and to digest the lessons. There is no time for the children to savour the
knowledge they are receiving. You just keep feeding and feeding them.
Teachers mount protests against the implementation of K-12, students and teachers face a lack of
classrooms and school facilities in certain areas. Places in the upstream areas does not receive the
same treatment compared to cities in the urban areas. The country does not need the K-to-12
program to achieve quality education. It cant be defined only through the number of years in school
because issues such as the lack of learning materials, classrooms and health and sanitation
facilities, should first be addressed, ACTs Raymond Basilio told the Inquirer.
An astonishing number of petitions have been presented to the Supreme Court about this Senior
High Implementation. If you will do a survey, most comments of the citizens about this senior high is
that the government is not yet truly prepared in this new educational system. As a pioneering student
of this new program, I can tell that the Philippine Government Officials are just forcing themselves to
reach the same level as other countries do. Theyve spent a lot of money in revising old textbooks
but still, students and teachers are complaining because until now they didnt receive any of that
textbooks. The pioneering students are carrying the burden of this implementation on their shoulder.
There is an increase of the number of drop outs because of the high cost of education and annual

increases in tuition and other school fees, also the two years of additional burdens to students and
their parents. We will see more street kids whose parents finally decided to give up the struggle for
education for their kids.
The implementation of Senior High School is an induced ripening, compared to a mango that does
not undergo the proper stages. An unripe mango picked and has been forced to be eaten by people
will constrict them in the throat. Ingest and focus on the good taste. No one will pick the fruit for no
reason, even though its not ripe at least the people was able to taste a bit of its flavour.
