Instructional Objectives
-Students will learn to develop a thoughtful hypotheses utilizing higher order of thinking.
-Students will learn how to identify and classify information using the Scientific Method.
-Students will examine a real-world issues and utilize the components of the Scientific Method.
Standards and Indicator
New York Science State Standard 1.1.1.
1.1.1. Students formulate questions independently with the aid of references appropriate for
guiding the search for explanations of everyday observations. 30
New York Science State Standard 1.1.3.
1.1.3. Students represent, present, and defend their proposed explanations of everyday
observations so that they can be understood and assessed by others. 71
New York Science State Standard 1.1.4.
1.1.4. Students seek to clarify, to assess critically, and to reconcile with their own thinking the
ideas presented by others, including peers, teachers, authors, and scientists. 121
Motivation
Students will utilize interactive games and videos to learn about the components of the Scientific
Method. They will be given an opportunity to choose a real-world problem to solve with the
Scientific Method individually or in a small group.

Materials
-Smartboard
-BrainPOP video
-Pens
-Notebooks
-Scientific Method Worksheets
Strategies
Cooperative Learning:
This will be evident when students work together to brainstorm topics for real world issues to
research.
Independent Work:
This will be evident students are able to identify components of the Scientific Method on
classwork sheets.
Adaptations
The teacher will provide both visual and auditory instructions throughout the lesson. The lesson
will have interactive and independent work that will reach all learning styles.
Differentiation of Instructions
Tier One: The students will utilize a word bank when identifying the steps of the Scientific
Method on class worksheets independently or in a small group.
Tier Two: The students will define each step of the Scientific Method on class worksheets
independently or in a small group.
Tier Three: The students will recall each step of the Scientific Method and provide on class
worksheets independently.
Developmental Procedures

The teacher will introduce the topic by discussing ways we problem solve in real world

situations. What do you do when you cant find something? What are the steps you take?
The teacher will provide key terms for the Scientific Method and ask students to define

the terms.
Students will utilize a Scientific Method Flow Chart to organize each step.
Students will be given the opportunity to choose a real world situation they can utilize the
scientific method.
Assessment

Students will be encouraged to recall the steps and definitions for the Scientific Method. The
class will have an open discussion about possible real world situations and how to utilize the
Scientific Method.
Independent Practice
Students will develop their own real world problem that will utilize the Scientific Method and
create an outline for their project.
Follow-up: Teacher Intervention
The teacher will review all class work and open a discussion about utilizing the Scientific
Method in problems outside of science class.
Follow-up: Academic Enrichment
The teacher and students will recall information from the discussion and determine how to
implement this lesson into other aspects of learning.
