Lesson Title: Introduction to Systems of Linear Equations and Solving
Systems by Graphing. Standards: CA CC A-REI.6: Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables. Purpose: The students will be able to find solutions to real-world problem situations by translating the problems into one ore more equations called systems of linear equations, then solve the systems of linear equations by graphing, by substitution, by adding or subtracting, or by multiplying first. Background Knowledge: The students must be able to solve an equation with one variable by algebraically or graphically.
Instruction Objectives: The
students will be able to define systems of linear equations, identify the number of solution to a system, solve the system by graphing.
Assessment: Given a system of
linear equations, the students will solve it by graphing as the teacher walking around checking for understanding. Also, the students will be giving a homework worksheet and practice quiz.
Language Objective: The
students will be able to describe a system of equations and a solution to the system of equations.
Assessment: Given a system of
linear equations the students will be describing a solution to the systems of equations as the teacher walking around examining.

Procedures: 8:00 AM Warmup 8:17 Notebook: Copy down table of contents. 8:19 Preview: Some real life problems can be modeled by a linear equation. However, many real-world problems will need two or more equations. We will first examine the solutions of a system of equations, then solve the system by graphing. Instruction: 8:21 Define system of linear equations. Definition: A system of linear equations is a set or collection of one ore more equations with a same variable. 8:23 Use the graphs to determine the number of solutions to a system of linear equations. The system of linear equations has exactly one solution, no solution, or infinitely many solutions. If the graphs intersect at one point then there is one solution. If the graphs do not intersect then there is no solution. If the graphs have the same line then there are infinitely many solutions.

8: 33 Explain that if an ordered pair is a solution to the
system then it must satisfy both equations. 8:35 Example 1: Determine if the point (3, 2) is a solution to the following system of equations 2x + 3y = 12 x - 4y = -5 Answer: Since the point (3, 2) satisfied both equations, it is a solution. 8:37 Example 2: Determine if the point (3, 2) is a solution to the following system of equations. 3x - 2y = 0 2y + x = 15 Stand up. Walk around and check for understanding. Answer: Since the point (3, 2) does not satisfy both equations, it is not a solution. 8:41 Break

8:51 Explain how we can solve a system of linear equations by graphing.
1) Graph the lines 2) If the graphs intersect in one point, the system has one solution 3) If they do not interact, the system has no solution. 4) If they have the same line, the system has infinitely many solutions 8:57 Example 3: Solve each of the following systems of equations by graphing, then state how many solutions each system has and explain how you know. 9:09 Closure: Systems of linear equations can be used to model many real-world problems. The intersection of the two lines represent the
solution to the problem because it satisfies both equations. There
maybe situations where we need three or more equations in order to solve the problem. 9:11 Homework
