Intro to DMR

Native data support

We seem to have a wide range of communications systems for a range of uses.
Voice, SCADA, telematics etc. Is there a way that this can be consolidated?
DMR delivers:
Voice as the primary service
Multi-level data, from status to IP packet
Freedom from one size fits all
APIs and solution support such as Location Services

2014 Tait Limited

Intro to DMR

DMR-standard data capabilities

Forward Error Correction and Confirmed Messages
increase reliability at coverage edges
Increased data capability over MPT1327 networks
- 128 Status messages vs. 32 for MPT1327
- ASCII and Unicode characters
- Up to 50 characters per message vs. 25 for MPT1327

DMR data flexibility

Short data messaging on the control channel is used for

transporting location information:
- Optimized channel usage
- No impact on voice
- Meets DMR Tier 3 standard
- Supports 2 polls per second per control channel
- Multiple control channels can be deployed on a site

Packet Data on the traffic channel

- Message size can vary
- Traffic channels can be dynamically assigned to voice or data

Intro to DMR

Delivering high availability

if this fails...

Node

SNMP manager
computer

then...
If there is only a single node, at each site a base station takes over and exercises control
channel and basic node functions. Local individual and group calls can be made. Short data,
status messages, supplementary services and packet data are not supported.
If the control node fails, another node at a different geographical location automatically takes
over.
If one of the switching nodes fails, the control node distributes the work among the other
switching nodes
If there is only one SNMP manager, central monitoring of network is not available.
Maintainers can still monitor individual nodes and base stations.
If there is a backup server, it will take over and little disruption should occur.

Call record computer

If there is no redundancy, when the application restarts it reloads the call records from the
moment before the failure occurred.
Call records are kept by the node for at least three months, allowing a reasonable period for
the computer to be repaired, before information is lost.

DMR Solution Key Benefits

Delivering high availability

if this fails...

Site-node
communications

then...
At the isolated site, one base station takes over, functioning as control channel and network
controller. It provides signaling messages for the control channel to transmit and it can handle
local (not intersite) individual and group calls. Short data, status messages, supplementary
services and packet data are not supported.

The result depends on the network topology. The network could turn into two independent
networks, each with a control node. To mitigate this, we recommend grouping nodes at
particular locations. However, at least two locations are needed for geographical redundancy.
The remaining operational base station uses TDMA to provide the control channel and a single
All but one base station
traffic channel.
at a site
Node-node
communications

Control channel

The network automatically takes the channel out of service and raises an alarm. The traffic
channel with the lowest channel number takes over the role of control channel. (Any traffic
channel can take over.) Channel capacity is reduced by two (or four, if a full subrack fails).

Traffic channel

Channel capacity is reduced by two (or four, if a full subrack fails). The network automatically
takes the RF channel(s) out of service.

Network gateway

The devices attached to the gateway lose service. To mitigate this, multiple network gateways
may be used.

Conventional and MPT migration

MPT Classic migration is similar to MPT-IP:
MPT typically uses 600ohm leased line circuits, not IP
More MPT network equipment will be redundant (e.g. SCUs, DAS cards,
inter-site modems etc.)

Conventional to DMR is simpler again, however:

There are many different types of conventional networks deployed
Each will require approach specific to that system

Analog terminals changed to multi-mode analog/DMR terminals

Analog and DMR operation share very similar user interfaces

2014 Tait Limited

Transitioning from Analog to Trunked DMR

Analog conventional to DMR step 1

Analog site initial configuration:
Analog or dual mode DMR terminals
are deployed and operating in analog
mode only

example (1x single TB8100 and 1x dual
TB8100)

2014 Tait Limited

Transitioning from Analog to Trunked DMR

Analog conventional to DMR step 2

Analog + DMR site now operating:
All terminals now dual conventional
or DMR
Majority calls placed over DMR network
Dual TB8100 upgraded to Dual TB9300
Analog to DMR inter-network calls
supported
PMR coverage maintained through out
migration

2014 Tait Limited

Transitioning from Analog to Trunked DMR

How do the conventional analog and DMR

systems work together?
DMR Call Process
1. DMR radio generates group call
2. Node includes Network gateway in
the call.
3. Network gateway passes voice
through 4 wire E&M to analog
base station

Analog Call Process

1. Analog base station transmits
2. Gateway passes call to node
3. Node sets a group call to the group
to which the network gateway (and
analog base station belongs)

2014 Tait Limited

Transitioning from Analog to Trunked DMR

Analog conventional to DMR Step 3

DMR only site now operating:
No analog capacity
DMR providing 2 additional traffic
channels
For same capacity as legacy system 2
spare channels now exist, customer
has options on how they are used;
additional voice or data

SOLUTION OVERVIEW:

Vietnam Ministry of Public Security (VMOPS):

Traffic Police pilot project
Tait Solution
The Traffic Police in Vietnam currently operate on an existing
analog conventional network however they wanted to move to a private
digital trunked system that would deliver benefits such as greater
coverage and clearer voice communications.
To mitigate the risk of a technology migration, VMOPS chose to proceed
with a pilot phase before implementing a full-scale,
five-six site digital trunked system.
This approach has helped them to avoid the budget constraints
associated with large, single implementations and will help to ensure
support for the change as the project progresses.

SOLUTION OVERVIEW:
Lihir Gold Mine, Papua New Guinea
Tait Solution
The Lihir Gold Mine is subject to extreme levels of heat, humidity,
moisture and dust as it is situated in the caldera of an extinct volcano that
is geothermally active. In these harsh conditions they needed robust radio
equipment and a communications system that would seamlessly link
workers across the mine.
A Tait system, in various forms, has been in operation at Lihir Mine since it
first opened in 1996, which is testament to the satisfaction and
acceptance of the Tait MPT 1327 system in this challenging mining
environment. They will eventually migrate from their analog MPT 1327
trunked system to a digital DMR Tier 3 trunked system.
The sales, ongoing maintenance, and support for the system and terminal
units is provided by PBS Communications.
