Social Skills Lesson Design for Kaleb, Student #5

Describe the inappropriate behavior:

When the student either doesnt want to work or believes the assignment is too difficult
he becomes frustrated and expresses his anger through throwing items or cursing.
Rationale for a new behavior (why is it important to develop a new behavior):
For the safety and wellbeing of all students in the classroom, as well as to help him
develop self-management techniques.
Describe the appropriate behavior (what skill does the student need to develop):
To aid the student in developing self-management skills and anger-management skills.
Skill Components (for example, if a student is going to use positive self-talk when
confronted by a negative peer comment, the specific steps of these behavior will need to
be described: For a description of Positive self-talk go to:
http://www.webmd.com/parenting/raising-fit-kids/mood/kids-positive-self-talk ).
1. The student will take six to ten deep breaths to calm himself.
2. The student will utilize a fidget or stress ball in order to extort his anger into
something other than throwing items.
3. Have a calm corner for the student to utilize in the case of extreme stress or
frustration.
4. After the student has calmed down, he can approach the assignment once again, or
raise his hand to call for help from the teacher.
Model demonstration example (after the positive alternative behavior has been
identified and broken into its component parts, the next step is for the adult to
demonstrate or model the behavior; this can involve the student playing the role of the
other person involved, for example, the teacher or peer, while the person assisting the
student in developing the new skill will role-play the student using the new skill.)
The teacher will model for the student the steps that he should take in order to manage
his own anger and behaviors. The teacher will model how to take deep breaths, squeeze
the stress ball, calmly walk over to the cool down area and then walk back to his desk
to try his assignment again. Then the teacher will invite the student to model the same
behaviors that the teacher had just done.

Student practice example (this will initially be done in the classroom or wherever the
training is taking place; student must have an opportunity to practice the new behavior
in a setting similar to that in which she will have to use it, for example, if having issues
with peer on playground then the new behavior would need to be practiced on the
playground with peers.) (Described in the previous portion)
Natural setting practice (if different than initial practice) The natural setting practice
would be any time the student is in the classroom.
Homework assignment
Ask the student to practice deep breathing techniques at
home when faced with difficult tasks.
Individual or group reinforcement strategy:
The student will be given stickers on a chart for each day he goes without throwing items
across the room.
Once the chart is filled the student will be able to choose a prize
from the treasure box. It will be ensured that there are options to choose from that really
encourage the student such as building block sets or match box cars, etc.
