The popular consensus on Presidentelect Donald Trumps surprise march
to the White House has been shock and
horror. How can a man who says what he
says and behaves how he behaves while
displaying the emotional maturity of a
12-year-old be allowed to have his finger on the nuclear codes?
He may have looked and sounded a little
more like a statesman during his victory

speech on Wednesday morning, but this
wont begin to wash away the unstatesmanlike bravado that marred his campaign
from start to finish.
If this man has any hidden depths they
certainly didnt emerge during his battle
with Hillary Clinton.
The often-vile personality we witnessed
somehow managed to gain the trust and

votes of 50 million Americans a quite
staggering statistic.
Most politicians Vladamir Putin and
Nigel Farage aside didnt want to see the
billionaire reality TV star anywhere near
the White House. Now thats where hes
heading, the world will simply have to
knuckle down and deal with him.
Pragmatic politicians are, of course,

making the best of it, insisting the new
leader of the free world should be judged
on future actions rather than the wicked
words that brought him to power.

Trumps stunning US presidential
election win this week, saying it represents the end of the two-state solution, but the vast majority of American
Jews were left holding their heads in
disbelief.
The president-elect, a property billionaire and reality TV star, is set to be one of
the most powerful presidents in modern
US history, as his Republican party
which already controlled Congress also
won back control of the Senate.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu was all smiles on hearing the
news, while Naftali Bennett, a prominent
right-wing Israeli politician often touted
as a future prime minister, said the result
meant the era of a Palestinian state is
over.
Others celebrating Trumps convincing win, by 279 college votes to

went to press were Europes nationalists, including UKIPs Nigel Farage,
Marine Le Pen of Front National
in France, and Geert Wilders in the
Netherlands. All three have won electoral
support for anti-immigration campaigns

Yet for most American Jews, Trumps
win was a nightmare and a tragedy, with
exit polls showing that 71 percent of
Jews voted Democrat an eight percent

In the end, it had no effect, as key battleground states such as Florida, which
is home to a large Jewish constituency,
voted decisively for Trump.
The Jewish angle was absent, said
Simon Henderson, Baker Fellow at Washington Institute, speaking to Jewish
News. There used to be a time that the
Jewish vote in New York and Florida was
key. Not in 2016.
Israeli right-wing politicians yesterday were quick to suggest that Trump

now makes good on his promise to relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv to
Jerusalem, in what would be a controversial move loaded with symbolism, and one
his recent presidential predecessors have
all resisted.
Others invited him to the West Bank,
to see the settlement projects, while Likud
lawmaker Yehuda Glick invited Trump to
ascend the Temple Mount and lead from
the source of light and energy a dialogue
of world reconciliation and peace.
At home, attention turned to Trumps
choice of Secretary of State, an influential
foreign policy role currently filled by John
Kerry. Commentators have suggested
this could be former Speaker Newt Gingrich, who has called the Palestinians an
invented people, or former US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton,
a leading neoconservative who once suggested that Israel might attack Iran.

Fear is the strongest force on

a person. Donald Trumps
success played out in a country
and a world where fear is
increasingly prevalent fear
of the other, whether that
other is defined by nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender,
sexuality or political affiliation.
It is troubling that Trump
amplified peoples fear of one
another.
This campaign, infused
with misogyny, racism,
xenophobia, homophobia and
religious intolerance, stands
alongside the followers of
Korach as an example of the
antithesis of holy debate.
While the campaigns
manipulation of fear has been
grotesque, it doesnt invalidate
that people were fearful in the

first place. Many feel part of
a silent majority, scared for
their security, their livelihoods and families, the same
insecurities and weaknesses
we all share but feel their fear
is dismissed by those in power.
But the beauty of democracy means political leaders,
even after victory, are not
given total power. The election
is only one mechanism for
people to express their desires
and effect change.
Today is not the day to
retreat, to hide, to surrender.
It is the day to turn to one
another, and to all individuals
and groups frightened by last
nights events, and declare that
we will not stand idly by.

Former White House coordinator on the Middle East Dennis
Ross will discuss the impact on the region of a Trump presidency when he addresses a capacity audience in London as
part of a series of Jewish News-We Believe in Israel events.
The diplomat, who was the point man on the Middle East in
the Bill Clinton administration, was more recently an advisor
to both President Obama and Hillary Clinton when she was
Secretary of State.
Ross will be in conversation with BICOM chief executive James Sorene during the 30 November event, organised
together with BICOM and JW3 and in partnership with the
Britain-Israel Alliance.
Ross will also be among the speakers at the Jewish NewsBICOM policy conference in Westminster that day, when
he will be joined by figures including Home Secretary
Amber Rudd, Middle East Minister Tobias Ellwood, Israels
Leader of the Opposition Isaac Herzog and Michael Oren,
deputy minister for public diplomacy in Benjamin Netanyahus
office.
Oren, the immediate past ambassador to Washington, will
also address a Jewish News-We Believe in Israel grassroots
event in Glasgow on 1 December.

Jewish communities on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond

have watched this highly divisive US presidential election and its
result with a mixture of surprise and alarm.
Some of Donald Trumps suggestions that an elite cabal was
behind Americas ills sometimes felt like anti-Jewish conspiracy
theories, particularly when campaign publicity around this
featured prominent Jews. I have expressed deep unease with
what sometimes looked like Trumps apparent hesitancy to
distance himself from white supremacist supporters.
His supporters would point to the fact his daughter Ivanka
converted to Orthodox Judaism to marry a Jewish man, apparently with the full support of the new President-elect. There is
also little doubt about Trumps long-standing relationship with
Israel and strong, pro-Israel views, including the pledge to revisit
the nuclear deal with Iran.
His offensive comments about women and his campaigns
wider hostility towards minorities, including Mexican immigrants, Muslims and African Americans, have caused anger
among many Jews. An urgent priority is to address the wounds
he and his campaign have caused, reassuring those who have
been demonised or disrespected during the campaign. This may
require significant reserves of patience and humility.
Engagement between Jews and the next US president will
need to strike a balance between constructively advancing our
common interests and setting down a clear marker about the
necessity of considered leadership in a pluralistic society.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has

never worked with a Republican president, so
the future partnership with President-elect
Donald Trump is unique. Hillary Clinton
would have been professional and critical, but
a known quantity. Trump will be dramatic and
friendly, but very unpredictable he will move
fast and break things.
The Republicans control Congress so
Trump has the power, but does he have the
inclination? He has questioned alliances and
treaties during the campaign and suggested he
has no issue with Russian aggression.
US allies are apprehensive and a lot will
now depend on whether Trump opts for experience or loyalty when appointing his top team.
The implications for Israels regional
security are uncertain. An isolationist America
will mean greater Russian influence and fewer
troops, money and arms to help allies. This is
good news for Iran, but bad news for Jordan,
Egypt and Saudi Arabia, which were already
feeling sidelined. Expect them to move quickly
to bind themselves to the new administration.

Trump has pledged to dismantle the Iran
nuclear deal, but that will be messy. Congress
could scrap it, but that isnt the end of the
story. The other signatories China, Russia,
Germany, France and the UK will stand by it.
A simpler option would be to tighten sanctions,
ruthlessly enforce the deal and deter US business investment in Iran.
If the Israeli-Palestinian peace process is on
ice, then Trump wont warm it up; hell shut the
freezer as its nowhere near his list of priorities.
A Trump administration will be much quieter
on settlement expansion than Obamas team
and many in Israels governing coalition will
welcome this.
Trump has pledged to move the US embassy
to Jerusalem but this is easier than it sounds.
Congress passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act in
1995, but every president since has delayed its
implementation.
Trump can just stop delaying it. His advisers
will urge him to get a big concession from Israel
before awarding such a prize. His officials will
warn of the seismic impact in the Arab world.
He may just say: What the hell, the crowds
will love it.

I have known Donald Trump for many years

and have a personal connection with him.
Tuesday night was an amazing victory for
democracy, a clear proof of the power of the
people and a victory for the state of Israel.
I did not publicly endorse him; its not my
place as a foreign citizen and I also took offence
at some of his comments. I did, however, act
as an adviser to parts of his campaign. I did so
because I believe he will be a good president and
will take care of what I hold dear; hell improve
relations between the US and Israel, show
strength towards Iran and give us the leadership
we have always looked to the United States for.
In all my conversations with him, both with
others and in private, I was always impressed
by his broad knowledge on complicated issues,
by his willingness without hesitation to make
a video I produced endorsing Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu and by his willingness to

Several Jewish religious leaders echoed
the concerns. Senior Masorti Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg said it was an American
tragedy and a tragedy for the whole world,

multicultural staff always impressed me.
For those that built him, then berated
him, for those who disgustingly equated
him to Hitler, and his supporters to Nazis,
they should take time for soul searching.
They didnt just insult him, they insulted the
majority of Americans who voted for him.
We must respect the will of the people and
the next president of the US.
Donald Trump will not just make America
great again, but he will make the world a better
and safer place for us all.

Most of America went to bed on Tuesday

would be the next president. That reality
awaited them yesterday morning, after
Hillary Clinton conceded victory in a
telephone call in the early hours. It is going
to mean changes for many, but what is it
going to mean for American Jews?
There used to be a time when there was
a Jewish vote which counted in American
elections, particularly, so it was said, in New
York and Florida.
But in hours of channel-hopping on
Tuesday evening, searching for sage
comments from the array of studio experts,
I only heard one reference to such a
phenomenon. That was from former New
York mayor Rudy Giuliani, commenting on
the Florida turnout and he was just specu-
lating whether it may have been significant.

The numbers are now out, and we can
see that there has been no shift in the
overall Jewish vote from its historical overwhelming preference for the Democratic
Party.
Despite one late television advertisement
that seemed anti-Semitic in tone implications of the power of money that appeared
to be Jewish money Trump is pro-Israel.
His leading Middle East adviser, originally
a Lebanese Christian, thinks the nuclear
deal with Iran was lousy, and his leading
adviser on Israel is his lawyer, who is Jewish.
Of more concern for American Jews will
be continued Republican control of the
Senate and the House of Representatives.
There is a vacancy on the Supreme Court,
which President Trump can now fill. For
sure it will be a conservative who may block
progressive social changes and try to turn
back the clock on what, to many Americans,
not only Jews, have been the advances of
recent decades.

The fear that propelled

Trump requires no logic

would win. I had placed a
wager on that fact with my
friend Cameron Munter,
the former American ambassador to Pakistan. Cameron
had absolutely assured me of
a Democrat victory. So sure
was he that he bet $100 on it.
Yesterday morning I sent him
a simple email: My friend, I
feel like crying. I do not wish to
collect. Please donate the $100
to a charity of your choosing.
I wanted no part in profiting
in any way from the fear that
millions of Muslim Americans, Mexican Americans and
migrants to America must be
feeling right now.
But then it struck me. In our
sanctimony, our outrage, our
righteousness, we overlook the way
in which we appear to the other.
The fact is that populism is not only
rising on the right. The hard left,
too, is angry, scared and increasingly vitriolic. Many on the left
are displaying the very traits they
disparage the right for exhibiting.
Fear is well and truly on the march.
Yes, we are scared. But they
Trump voters are scared, too.
Blaming and shaming them will
only scare them more. And people
do not go on to do good things when
they are scared. The 1930s stand as
a vivid testament to this truth. We
liberals must grieve this election
loss, yes. We must mourn, then
accept, and reflect on the outcome.
But, most of all, we must then act
to dissipate this fear among Trump
supporters themselves. And that
cannot happen, will not happen, if
we are scared ourselves. Shouting,
insulting and finger-pointing at a
moment like this rarely changes
opinions, but neither does
pretending there is no problem.
Great change is afoot, and a
consequence of this change is great
trepidation and uncertainty. We
often hear that globalisation has
disenfranchised people, but its
most obvious effect is that it has
empowered parochialism.
Owing to historically unparalleled connectivity and mobilisation, globalisation has stratified
entire populations.
Extremist Muslims are hating
on kuffar infidels. Neo-Nazis and
President-elect Trump addresses supporters alongside running mate Mike Pence after being declared the winner
their populist right bedfellows are

hating on the multicultural left.
The hard left are hating on neoliberal globalists. And they all seem
to be hating on the Jews.
Many Muslims now feel more
connected to their religious counterparts across the world than they
do to their fellow citizens. For all
their talk of anti-globalisation,
the populist right, too, have forged
transnational global alliances with
like-minded nativists the world
over, while hating their liberal
elite neighbours for doing the
same. Meanwhile, the globalist left
protests neoliberal capitalism,
while relying on the technology and
social media platforms created by
these neoliberal capitalists.
Globalised localism is what I call
this. And as these political strands
draw in on themselves owing to
connectivity, they grow further
apart from each other. That echo
chamber is more akin to a deep
mining cave leading nowhere.
Fear requires no logic. This is
why it is contradictory. Depending
on who you talk to, we are simultaneously witnessing the end of
progressivism and the return of
state socialism. The end of borders and resurgent nationalism.
The sidelining of religion and a
revival of theocracy. Immigrants
are stealing our jobs while unjustly

claiming welfare.
Free speech has suffered terribly.
Populists will abuse it to incite
hatred of Muslims. Islamists will
simultaneously argue for it, and
against it, depending on whether
the topic is the right to advocate
theocratic extremism or ban
cartoons. The hard lefts answer is
typically authoritarian, preferring
to silence debate rather than think
uncomfortable thoughts. I am at
once listed by two respectable
outlets as a Muslim terrorist and
an anti-Muslim extremist. Reasonable conversation around Islam,
race, and immigration has become
near impossible.
Indeed, the only thing this
fear has in common is the overwhelming narcissism of its most
devout adherents. Everything must
revolve around us. Only we are the
victims. Nobody elses pain matters. Unless, of course, it can be
used to teach them how much we
have been suffering, too.
Of course African-Americans,
Latinos and other minority
communities have suffered, and
will suffer still. Yes, many Muslims,
too, are suffering. But my fellow
liberals must accept that the white
working classes especially the
underemployed men among them
are also in dire straits. These
young men are underrepresented
at universities today, underemployed, and many are incarcerated.
Depending on the perspective,
everyone is at once a minority and
a majority. The truth is, we are all
suffering.
Yes, it is racist to suspect that
all brown men who look like me
are rapists. It is bigoted to presume
that all Muslim men who share my
faith advocate religiously justified
rape. It is xenophobic to assume
that all immigrants like my family
are sexual predators awaiting
their chance to rape. But let me be
absolutely clear: what will feed this
racism, bigotry, and xenophobia
even more is refusing to talk about
the very real challenges to culture

and liberalism that globalisation
and intercultural exchange bring.
Silencing this conversation only
encourages the populist rights
rallying cry against the establishment. In part, Trump won because
the hard left has abandoned the
facts almost as quickly as the hard
right. This will not be comfortable to read for many, but thats
precisely why it needs to be said.
We have become quick to
demand our rights while slow to
afford those same rights to others.
If all blacks are not thugs, if all
Muslims are not terrorists, likewise
all police cannot be racist killers
and all straight white men cannot
be the devil incarnate with absolutely nothing to contribute.
In between these tabloid simplifications, intelligent debate has
been lost. Liberalism provides freedom of religion and from religion.
Free speech allows for the advocacy
of ideas such as Islamist theocracy,
but it also means that others have
the inalienable right to blaspheme.
Bigotry can exist against minorities but also by minorities. Human
rights are a double-edged sword
of justice. They work both for and
against people, including for and
against minorities. We should be
able to hold two thoughts at the
same time.
If Brexit and Trumps win has
failed to stop us in our tracks and
reflect, then I humbly suggest we
are part of the problem.
Only a new commitment to the
universality of human rights and
human dignity can lift us out of
this current quagmire. But that will
require foot soldiers of peace who
preach what we have in common
rather than how we are different;
what we have gained, rather than
what we have lost; and what we
seek to achieve rather than what we
have failed to accomplish.
These foot soldiers of peace
must be able to transcend their own
victimhood while pulling people
together. Love and empathy must
win over hate and vengeance.
Everyone is a victim, and
everyone is an aggressor.

The vice-chairman of Labours inquiry into
anti-Semitism has said the timing of a peerage to
Shami Chakrabarti has damaged the credibility
of the report she produced, writes Justin Cohen.
Professor David Feldman made the comments after community leaders condemned
the timing of the former Liberty chiefs elevation to the House of Lords only weeks after
she produced a report on anti-Semitism
with the Chief Rabbi saying it left the reports
credibility in tatters despite her years of
distinguished public service.
Feldman, who is also the director of the Pears
Institute for the Study of Antisemitism, told
an audience at Liverpool Limmud that he only
knew about the peerage when the rest of the
country found out.
Asked about whether its timing had damaged
the report, he said: Clearly the response to the
peerage has been damaging... It has damaged the
credibility of the report among large sections of
the public, not only among Jews (but) among
non-Jews as well.
But he nevertheless stressed that the report,
while not exhaustive, was an honest and constructive response to its terms of reference.
Jeremy Corbyn has stressed the offer of a
peerage was only made after completion of her
report.
Commissioned by Corbyn after a series
of suspensions of party members including MP Naz Shah and Ken Livingstone, the
Shami Chakrabarti has insisted her report

message featuring the epithet Zio has had her
suspension lifted, writes Justin Cohen.
Labina Basit, who is believed to be among
a number of people to have had sanctions
removed in recent days, took to Twitter on Monday to say she had been warned.
She wrote on Twitter: Im flabbergasted
someone can report me, despite asking lab wont
say who; people suspended 4 no reason than
unsuspended + warned.
Another message said: Lots are discussing
this and are not going to put up with a warning
for something they didnt do in the first place.
It has not been confirmed exactly what she

was suspended for, but she recently tweeted
notorious user @marcsandsparks saying she had
been told action was taken partly for her retweet
of one of his messages.
On 17 June, she retweeted a post from him
that included the words zio-medias islamophobic agenda two weeks before Shami Chakrabartis report said the epithet should have no
place in Labour party discourse going forward.
Asked by another user on Sunday if she condemned Hamas and Fatah for their violent
attacks on random Jews, she wrote on the
micro blogging site: Its impossible to condemn
people defending theft of their land.
A party spokesperson said: We dont comment on individuals membership statuses.

General Assembly voted on 10
resolutions against Israel in one day.
Along with the Israel votes on
Tuesday, the committees took up
just three other resolutions for
the rest of the world on Syria,
Iran and Crimea. At least two of

the Temple Mount, referring to the

Ofsted inspectors paid their latest

visit to JFS this week, as the underpressure school sought to impress
after a disastrous July 2014 report

Bosses at British Transport Police have withdrawn
public safety posters they
had placed in stations this
week, after complaints that
the character portrayed
resembled the hook-nosed
Jew of Nazi propaganda.
The posters appeared as
part of an anti-terrorism
campaign, approved by the
Department of Transport,
and urge commuters to
report others acting suspiciously.
However the cartoon

graphics, showing a sinister man in the shadows,
provoked a strong online
reaction, with many comparing the image to that
used in the infamous 1937
Nazi poster, entitled The
Eternal Jew [see inset].
In a statement posted
online, British Transport
Police said: We are saddened that people may have
been upset by parts of this
campaign. That certainly
wasnt the intention.
The campaign uses illustrations rather than photographs to avoid singling
out any group or part of the
community.
London resident Mandy
Wax, who expressed upset at
the poster, had said it warranted an investigation.
We cannot tolerate
images like this, which are
reminiscent of Nazi propaganda.
They have the potential to divide us and incite

adults, a new study reveals.
The Middle East dispute is among the most
confusing when it comes to current affairs that

Week Junior, the study claims some are so
embarrassed at being flummoxed by foreign
policy or stumped by the Syrian conflict that
they tell fibs to hide their shame, according to
researchers.
The survey of 2,000 adults found more than
half admit to bluffing over their knowledge,
while four in 10 try to steer conversations away
from hot topics to avoid being left red-faced.
Top of the list of topics misunderstood by
British adults were Russian foreign policy and
international finance markets, before IsraelPalestine. Following these were the Syrian
war, Isis, education reforms, fracking, Brexit,

The charity, which uses innovative therapies for adults and children with disabilities,

put in place around the location, ominously

courses, such as at Googles 200-student
Android course at the Interdisciplinary Centre
(IDC) in Herzliya.
Delegates also heard about an Israeli accelerator specifically helping firms to develop technologies to help people with disabilities, a world
first. The work between BIS and Google has
already seen the launch of the Sesame Phone,
which works in response to head movements.
Other speakers told how robots were helping
children with autism and how wheelchair users
can now use smartphones to navigate their way
around obstacles.

Four in 10 Jews feel their faith

according to new figures from
the Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirviss ShabbatUK.
After a survey of almost 200
Jews last month, Mirvis said it
was sad problems persist in
the workplace, with more than
a quarter of respondents still
reluctant to discuss their faith
and what this meant.
Modern Britain celebrates diversity and promotes
freedom of religious belief
and it is encouraging to see
that largely borne out in this
research, he said.
But it is sad to see that
there are still some for whom
faith is something to be kept
relatively quiet or avoided
altogether while at work.
Faith shapes the way that
people live their lives and as
such it has an important part
to play in the workplace. Issues
like trust, commitment and a

workplace, while 32 percent

for Shabbat.
This year, ShabbatUK takes
place tomorrow, 11 November,
beginning at around 4pm. For

many, the timings may raise
challenging questions if they
wish to leave work early to
ensure they are home in time
for the start of Shabbat, said
organisers.
The teams research indicates that the main reasons for
Jews not asking to leave early
for Shabbat were not wanting
to stand out from colleagues,
and work pressures making it
difficult to leave early.
Apartments and houses are now available to buy in four well designed, purpose-built
developments for the over-55s, three in or around London and one in Marlborough.

likely to get free meals
Children at Jewish schools
in the UK are three and a half
times less likely to be eligible
for free school meals than the
national average, new government data has revealed.
Of 17,241 pupils at statefunded Jewish primary and
secondary schools across the
country, 735 (4.2 percent) were
eligible because family income
was below a certain level.
The national average is 14.8
percent.
The figure for children at
Jewish schools was released
in response to a parliamentary
question.
It excludes more than 4,000
children who are attending
independent Jewish schools in
London and Manchester, and
Jewish children attending nonJewish schools.
The figures show marked differences between London and
other regions.
At Londons JFS, where 1,482
children study, only 24 were on
free school meals, while at Leeds
Jewish Free School, almost 19
percent were eligible.

CLOSING IS

Manchesters oldest kosher deli finally closed
its doors last week as the grandson of the
founder described the end of an era.
The deli, called Titanics, was named after
the ill-fated ocean liner because its founder,
Joseph Hyman, survived the famous sinking.
Last week his grandson Stanley said: It is a
very sad day for the family and the end of an era
in Manchester.
The community has been taken over by the
big supermarket chains.
At Pesach, for example, the supermarkets
sgtafted selling everything for less than half the
Titanics was named after the doomed liner
price, so everybody started to go there because

it was cheaper.
Russian-born Joseph Hyman left for New
York to escape anti-Semitic pogroms, but was
dropped off in Glasgow instead. It later transpired that many Jews experienced something
similar, so making their home in the UK.
Hyman tried his luck again in 1912, buying
third-class tickets on the Titanic. He was one of
the few fortunate enough to get into a lifeboat.

Lord Alf Dubs has been named Peer of the

Year at the Spectators Parliamentarian of the
Year Awards for overturning the UK governments original plan on migrants.
Westminsters original policy was to
prioritise supporting the refugees in the
Middle East. Moved by his experiences on the
kindertransport, Lord Dubs put forward an
amendment to allow unaccompanied children
to gain refuge in the UK.
Speaking at the awards, the 84-year-old
said: Its very humbling to meet people who
have dedicated everything to the cause of
refugees
Im glad that some of them are now
coming. I could make a speech about why the
government didnt get a move on, but theyre
doing it now. Im delighted about that.
A garage owner in Oldham has refused to sell to

an Israeli because theyre the same as Isis.
As reported in the newsletter Heat Street,
Jack de Lowe, who lives in Israel, was told in an
email that the garage does not ship to such
non-existent countries. However, delivery to
Palestine can be arranged at a sensible price.
The owner, Mursal Israr, said we wouldnt
do business with Isis [so] we wouldnt do
business with Israel. Theyre the same thing.
He added that we dont recognise the
state of Israel because of innocent Muslims
and peoplegetting killed there on a daily
basis.
Responding to the suggestion that Jack de
Lowe wasnt a representative of the country
but merely a citizen, Israr said: He shouldnt
live there then.

Ex-Spurs boss cleared of

Harrods shopper assault
A Jewish accountant characterised

was found not guilty of assault yesterday, writes Jenni Frazer.
David Buchler, 64, an insolvency practitioner who is
a former vice-chairman of
Tottenham Hotspur FC and a
former director of the English
National Opera, was involved in
a verbal dispute which escalated,
after a clash at the bakery counter of
Harrods Food Hall on 31 December
2015.
Buchler, who was buying a
challah and two croissants, was
accused of queue-jumping by fellow
shopper Rosaria Birrane. Matters
got ugly after Buchler believed
either Mrs Birrane or her husband,
James, had called him a dirty Jew,
and sworn at him. He told Isleworth
Crown Court that Birrane had
come up behind him on his blind
side. Believing he was going to be
physically attacked, Buchler raised

his free arm to defend himself and
connected with Mr Birranes face,
fracturing his nose in the process.
An angry Mrs Birrane called 999
and, in evidence in court, maintained that Buchler had ruined
[her husbands] life and that she
would do whatever she could to
achieve justice for him. Admitting she was running a vendetta
against Buchler, she lost her temper
several times on Tuesday.
Both Mr and Mrs Birrane
completely denied having called
Buchler a dirty Jew, but Mrs
Birrane went further, claiming her
mother-in-law was Jewish and that
she would never have used such an
epithet.
She later acknowledged that she
had no direct information about
her mother-in-laws religion other
than recalling a conversation in
which the older woman had mentioned being told to go back to Pal-
estine when she was a child.

Defence QC Jonathan Goldberg
successfully applied to the judge
to reveal to the jury the content of
many of Mrs Birranes Facebook
posts. The jury were told her Facebook page included questionable
comments about Muslims and an
article about a Jewish conspiracy
to take over the world. Goldberg
suggested these articles indicated
she was an equal opportunity
racist. But she shouted: Jewish
conspiracy to take over the world?
Oh, for f***s sake. Do shut up.
Another article reposted by Mrs
Birrane criticised the Rockefeller
and Rothschild families, which
Goldberg said shows the classic
conspiracy theory that Jews run
the world, that Jews are running
the financial markets, that the Jews
are starting wars.
Summing up, Goldberg drew
attention to inconsistencies in Mrs
Birranes evidence, particularly
her claim that Buchler had sworn

at her and at the Harrods counter
assistant, Cecilia Price, whose evidence was given by statement as
she had had a family bereavement,
but there was no mention of being
verbally abused by Buchler.
A large number of character witnesses gave statements in Buchlers
favour, including Tottenham MP
David Lemmy, former FA chairman
Lord Triesman, former Spurs
chair Paul Bobroff, and the retired
Gibraltar Supreme court judge
Barrington Black. All testified to
Buchlers renown for keeping his
temper and for his calmness.
Speaking to Jewish News after
the verdict, Buchler, who was once
chairman of the UJIAs business
division, and served on its board
together with his late wife Caroline,
said: There are no winners in a
case such as this. I am truly grateful
to the jury for seeing the truth and
voting accordingly.

The countrys leading experts on demography have said that the relative segregation
of strictly Orthodox Jews may contribute
to increased prejudice towards other social
groups, for lack of knowing them.
The observations were made by Professor Eric
Kaufmann at Birkbeck, University of London,
who has co-authored a new report with Prof. Ted
Cantle, who first investigated community cohesion after a series of race riots 15 years ago.
Cantle warned that segregated societies
breed intolerance and prejudice and this week
Kaufmann suggested this may apply to Charedi
communities. Teds statement reflects, I think,
research on contact theory, which shows more
positive attitudes to other groups where there is
a higher presence of other groups and/or lower

segregation, said Kaufmann.
Of course this depends on how large a group
is, so even if Jews were concentrated, if they were
small enough so as not to dominate entire areas,
then they would still meet others and so not have
increased prejudice. But for the ultra-Orthodox,
I would have thought that segregation might contribute to these very attitudes.
In their study, which found increasingly
ethnic polarisation across the country, the pair
also observed the like-with-like attraction of
groups toward their own concentrations. Kaufmann added: This drive is stronger for some
groups than others... I would expect Charedim to
have the strongest own-group attraction.
Hasmo playground shortlisted Brain pre-wired towards hate

Neuroscientists in London
have identified the part of the
brain responsible for antiSemitism and other types of
prejudice, in a pioneering new
study exploring how people
form negative stereotypes.
Researchers at University
College London, led by Hugo
Spiers, identified activity in
the anterior temporal lobe,
which suggests that the brain
is pre-wired to prejudice.
While there has already
been work on gender or racial
stereotyping, this is the first
time scientists have looked
into how brains learn to link

undesirable characteristics to
specific groups and how this
later emerges as prejudice.
Participants were given
information about fictitious
social groups, painting the
groups as good and bad
with some things bucking the
trend.
Once a group was seen as
essentially good, brain activity
in the anterior temporal pole
quickly tailed off, regardless
of whether there was good
or bad information about
them. However, it continued
to respond strongly to any negative information about the

behaviour of the bad group.
The data does suggest the
temporal pole of the human
brain is responsible for people
learning prejudice of any kind,
including anti-Semitism, said
Spiers, acknowledging the
implications for social groups
at risk of negative stereotyping.
Wed love funding for
work to help explain why some
people end up more prejudiced, and how people unlearn
prejudice.

In January reality will bite and the one billion-dollar question asked: what
will President Trump do? Here are some of our best guesses...
Abroad, he will keep making a lot of noise about Iran, but he will not tear up
the nuclear deal, unless there is a significant military threat to Israel. He may
introduce new laws making it even more difficult for companies to deal with
anything even remotely linked to an Iranian proxy, increasing the nervousness of big U.S. banks doing business in the Middle East.
His friendship with Russia means that, if he does decide to support a twostate push, he may give Vladimir Putin the nod to hold talks in Moscow. Putin
and Trump would then share in the glory if it came off, which it wont.
Before 2017 ends, there will be a high-profile presidential visit to the Holy
Land, with big smiles all round, as he brings Bibi back in from the cold.
On military aid to Israel, the man who refuses to pay contractors is unlikely
to increase the $38billion 10-year deal recently signed by Israel and the U.S.
But he would be receptive to one-off military funding requests. An Israeli
scrap with Hezbollah would be motive enough.
At home, if he is able, he may tighten race-hate laws, especially over antiIsrael activity. He will no doubt do this by mentioning the word terrorism.
A lot. American universities, once home of the counter-revolution, may find
that, under Trump, supporting Israel Apartheid Week becomes illegal.

LACK OF FEELING
AT A FUNERAL
I was most interested to read about the incident
mentioned in Alex Brummers article in Jewish News on 27 October entitled: Rabbis crude
opinions had no place at a funeral.
A little while back, I had occasion to attend
a particularly distressing Jewish funeral in the
London area.
The deceased was a middle-aged single lady
with no close family, who apparently had committed suicide.
After the formalities at the graveside, the rabbi
was completely unconcerned to offer any comfort to the mourners, but instead proceeded back

IN THE CASE OF SUSYA
Susya is a Palestinian West Bank village under repeated threat of demolition because it cannot obtain building permits. Roslyn Pine is worried that
I have yet to learn the facts about Susya (Jewish News, 29 October). For
someone who claims to know the facts, it would help if she could actually
copy my name correctly.
Rabbis for Human Rights (RHR) and most of the anti-Occupation NGOs
such as Yesh Din and Btselem agree that Susya is a village for which corroborating Ottoman documents exist back to 1881.
In the early 1980s, a Jewish settlement lawyer, Plia Albeck, confirmed
that the village is on private Palestinian land.
And if Susya exists on private Palestinian land, then the Israeli authorities
have no right to demolish any structures, something they are still intending
to do. However, the Israeli High Court hearings since 2000 have concerned
only Susyas lack of building permits. Susyas structures are illegal in Israeli
law because planning requests (to build) have been proposed but always
rejected, like hundreds of other Palestinian villages on the West Bank.
Conversely, Jewish settlements unlawful in Israeli law are usually left
alone. According to many of the NGOs, there are approximately 100 Jewish settlements called outposts, often on private Palestinian land, that are
illegal under Israeli law and yet no action is taken against most of them.
Most will probably be legalised retroactively by Israel.
This case highlights the double standards at the heart of Israeli law and
the occupation.

Zacs the only option

for my constituency

he voters of the Richmond Park

constituency are about to go to
the polls yet again. In the past 18
months, they have voted in the
general election, an advisory plebiscite to
give permission to Zac Goldsmith to run
for mayor of London, the Brexit referendum and now a by-election in which
Goldsmith is running as an independent.
The issues in the Richmond by-election
might seem obvious. In the referendum, this
mainly middle-class, upper income constituency voted Remain overwhelmingly, despite
MP Goldsmith being a strong Brexit advocate.
Now Goldsmith has caused a by-election
by his passionate promise to oppose a third
runway at Heathrow the main shadow over
living in the area is the roar of jets heading for
the airport.
The Tories have decided not to oppose
Goldsmith, even though he is running as an
independent. Lib Dems, who held the seat for
several periods before Goldsmiths election,

believe he is vulnerable over Brexit and are
pouring resources into the campaign of his
opponent, Sarah Olney. She has been endorsed
by the Greens, who have also stood aside
despite Goldsmiths environmental record.
The issues for the Jews of Richmond are
very different. In spite of his Brexit views, very
different from most of the community, Goldsmith is a personally popular figure who is very
much at ease on his occasional visits to shul for
civic events such as last shabbats remembrance
services. He is proud of his Jewish heritage and
the library of Hebraic volumes inherited from is
uncle, the environmentalist Teddy Goldsmith.
The acceptable face of the Lib Dems, former
MP Baroness Susan Kramer, was also present

Olney and the Lib Dems have an enormous
problem. Richmond is also the former constituency of Baroness Jenny Tongue, perhaps the
most poisonous figure at Westminster when it
comes to the Israel and the Middle East. After
numerous suspensions and reinstatements
she quit the Lib Dems last month after hosting

a widely-condemned meeting in the Lords at

which Israel was compared to the terror group
Isis and Jews were blamed for the Holocaust.
The malodorous impact of Tonge on the
townspeople of Richmond goes back years and
has contributed to negative attitudes towards
Israel. A couple of years ago, pro-Palestinian
activists persuaded Sam Walters, legendary
figure behind Richmonds pioneering Orange
Tree theatre, to organise a debate on a
shabbat morning on Israels occupation of the
disputed territories. After some discussion
with the honorary officers and rabbi, services

began a little earlier so I could attend the
meeting and, if given the chance, try to state
Israels case. It was a shocking event. Not so
much from the participants in the debate, who
included a revisionist Israeli academic ,but
because of the attitude of the audience.
The largely white, older, upper middle-class
audience launched into a series of accusations
against the legitimacy of the Jewish state. My
intervention was listened to without interruption but the Orange Tree had become a
kangaroo court and it was Israel that was on
trial while the rest of the Middle East was
in flames. It was at this deeply-disturbing
moment I recognised that years of Tonge,
public meetings in churches, libraries and the
like had helped to turn many neighbours into
virulent anti-Zionists.
Lib Dems in Richmond are anathema to
those of us in the constituency who identify
with Israel. Jeremy Corbyns Labour is an
equally toxic choice. Irrespective of Goldsmiths views on Brexit, when it comes to the
Jewish vote he is the only acceptable candidate.

his year may well be defined

as when British Jewry and its
representative organisations
fought an onslaught of antiSemitic attitudes and campaigns in
Parliament, campuses and many public
organisations with renewed vigour.
Prejudice and anti-Semitism are hardly
new phenomena and I too had my share of
battles in earlier parliaments. However, the
number of new incidents and the co-ordination of anti-Semitic groups threatens
national life and racial harmony.
To try to explain the how and why of antiSemitism is complicated because of its deep
roots from centuries of inexplicable hate.
Author Hannah Arendt said the reason
for this enmity was too irrational for any
serious analysis and she used a joke to
describe the limitations of this approach.
It went like this: An anti-Semite claimed
that the Jews had caused World War 1. The

reply was : Yes the Jews and the bicyclists.

Why the bicyclists? asks the one. Why the
Jews? asks the other.
Currently, some people find it convenient
to link their anti-Semitism with anti-Zionism
and the state of Israel. When the Labour leader,
Jeremy Corbyn, was challenged with evidence
of this within his party he dodged the issue.
Hugo Rifkind writing in The Times remarked:
If he wants to shake off his extremism wing, (he)
needs to stop wriggling and show humility.
Extremism had found a convenient niche
in Labour with the result that Corbyn was able
to exploit the dissatisfaction associated with

the economic situation in a similar fashion to
other political leaders such as Alexis Tsipras
in Greece and Pablo Iglesian in Spain. These
have captured populist support.
Corbyn and John McDonnell and the associated Momentum group are in the process of
controlling constituency Labour parties, for
example in Bristol, and making life difficult
and tense for sitting MPs. Against this background, it is unlikely the attitude of the leadership towards anti-Semitism will change.
Another dangerous concern is Corbyns
contempt for parliament illustrated by
his response to the all-party home affairs
select committee, which found he failed to
provide consistent leadership in tackling
anti-Semitism within the party.
Typically, Corbyn responded by saying
the damning report was biased and disproportionate. For Corbyn to dismiss a select
committee report will create a precedent if he
chooses to dismiss other reports affecting the
country should they not meet with his politics.
So what is the future for Labour? It will
be a testing time for those of us remaining in
the party because Corbyns divisive poli-
cies will prevent an electoral majority. Come

2020, the nation will be confronted by Corbyn
and the hard Brexit line of Theresa May. It will
be a tough call as the 48 percent who voted to
remain in the EU seek revenge for the cynical
referendum campaign which the prime minister
approved of, even if she was not party to it. Also,
I hear from colleagues that May will not risk
losing Number 10 so a snap election is on the
cards. A new left-of-centre grouping is likely.
Finally, returning to Jewish concerns, specifically the growth of anti-Semitism, it is essential
we respond to any attacks or abuse as racism.
One of the lessons of the Stockholm international forum, the largest conference devoted to
the issues of prejudice, recognised that we shall,
as Jews, need to overcome prejudice by forming
the widest possible alliances.
At that conference and since, I have urged
Jews and other minorities need to work
together to ensure we are not isolated in our
response whenever the charge is anti-Semitic or
anti-black. Just as the anti-Semitic oppositions
have forged links, we should make it clear Jews
do not stand alone. It would also have the clear
advantage of minimising the wriggle room of
Corbyn and others.

British Jews calling for an

end to Israels occupation

I write as a 20-year-old British
Jewish student who couldnt have had
a more conscious upbringing learning
about the state of Israel.
Many of my relatives live in Israel,
descendants of pre-1948 olim. My close
connection to the country is not just taught,
but cultivated through frequent visits: holidays, family gatherings and Israel Tour.
However, as I grew older, I started to
challenge an arguably simplistic outlook on
the region. I questioned my father about his
familys experiences in 1930s Palestine.
It is my belief the need to understand the
history of the conflict is indispensable to
any future encounters with a country I knew
only on face value. It is this journey that
brought me to Yachads youth campaign,
Partners to Peace. I am one of 30 student

campaigners from across the UK who are
leaders in youth movements, synagogues,
and on campus. The campaign is fundraising for the Bethlehem-based NGO the
Holy Land Trust (HLT), which supports
nonviolent Palestinian activism.
The importance of the trust should be
understood in light of the protracted stalemate in the current peace process between
the State of Israel and the Palestinian
Authority. The optimism of the 1990s now
feels in the very distant past, given the
violence that has followed ever since.
A key emphasis for Sami Awad, the
founder of the trust, is community action.
This principle is particularly important
given the inescapable disillusionment felt
towards politicians in this conflict.
I personally experienced this disappointment when speaking with representatives
from the PLOs Committee for Interaction
with Israeli Society (PCIIS) in Ramallah.
They often fell back on divisive language
such as Settler Colonialism and, when

asked about Hamas, instinctively answered
that they were an integral part of our
people but with different ideas, without
admitting past acts of terrorism.
HLTs forward-looking pragmatism
of a future of understanding between
two peoples is far removed from this.
The communal focus of HLT promotes a
framework and environment for a solution to emerge among dozens of actors
in this conflict, divided by regions, tribal
ties and religious affiliation. Its vital for
liberal Zionists like myself to find Palestinian partners who back HLTs
principle of nonviolence. By supporting
this organisation, we can demonstrate

our Zionism of moral and political
responsibility, promoting a multi-ethnic,
multi-religious, multi-lingual, Jewish and
democratic state of Israel.
Seeking new political alignments may
seem nave to a despairing reality faced on
both sides. However, if politicians continue
to treat only the symptoms and not the
disease, we will see no end to violence.
We are trying, with small gestures, to
break the cycle of violence encouraged by
military occupation and political deadlock,
so that two states can live independently.

The human spoils of war

Stephen Poliakoff tells Francine Wolfisz about
his new Cold War drama, Close To The Enemy
n the aftermath of the Second World War,

an elite British Army unit was tasked with
abducting hundreds of German scientists
and businessmen who could help the Allies
gain the advantage over their new enemy:
Russia.
Some were literally forced from their beds and
taken to Britain, where they were interrogated until
they gave up their trade secrets which included
everything from jet engines, coal mining and plastics
manufacturing to the secret formula of well-known
perfumes. If they did not comply, they were interned.
It was a grab on the human spoils of war,
explains Stephen Poliakoff, whose latest BBC2
drama was inspired by the secretive work of T-Force,
as revealed in recently declassified government
documents.
Close To The Enemy, written and directed by
Poliakoff, revolves around Captain Callum Ferguson
(played by Jim Sturgess), who has been tasked with
turning German aviation scientist, Dieter Koehler
(August Diehl) to work for the British.
As the plot unfolds, Ferguson finds himself up
against Kathy Griffiths (Phoebe Fox), a tough, young
woman working for the War Crimes Unit, whose
mandate is to bring escaped war criminals to justice.
The stellar cast also includes Bates Motel actor
Freddie Highmore, Charlotte Riley (Peaky Blinders),
and Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones).
Of the seven-part drama, which begins tonight

(Thursday), the 63-year-old writer says he wanted
to show how the interests of national security were
pitted against justice and humanity in the years
following the war, but adds that not everything is as
black and white as it first seems.
I wanted it to be morally complex. I didnt just
want the Nazi hunter to be the good person and the
soldier seizing the scientists to be the bad person,
he says.
Researching the work of T-Force, as well as that
of the War Crimes Unit, Poliakoff, whose Russianborn father lost members of his family to the Holocaust, discovered some 4,000 Nazis were listed as
suspects in the aftermath of 1945 but that number
was whittled down to just 150 in a matter of months,
primarily because of a lack of resources and fears
over encountering the Cold War.
So thats an awful number of guilty people
walking free, but the imperative was to get ahead in
this new world, he explains.
The tiny proportion of war criminals brought
to justice can also be explained by the lack of
co-ordination between various organisations tasked
with finding former Nazis. Poliakoff describes the
situation as chaotic.
Much of the Nazi hunting was very ad hoc, and
you hear about Jewish soldiers who went off and did
it because they realised nobody else was going to.
Most famously, German-Jewish refugee Hanns
Alexander tracked down and arrested Rudolf Hss,
the notorious commandant of Auschwitz.
Meanwhile, former Nazis were being grabbed
by the Allies and having their former lives erased in
return for their cooperation.
He continues: The impetus was on getting
people who could be of use to us and to not be too
fussy about what they had done during the war. In
America, they had their own secret programme,
Operation Paperclip, in which they gave many
former Nazis new biographies and fake jobs.
The government publicly stated it would do no
business with any ex-member of the Nazi party, but
that of course would have counted out many of their
top scientists, including Wernher von Braun, who
created their rocket programme and he wasnt just
a Nazi, but a member of the SS.

Meanwhile the British acted in a similar fashion.
Nazi counter-intelligence officer Horst Kopkow
was sheltered from the war crimes investigation by
British intelligence and they even faked his death in
1948, to help him escape prosecution.
That story we know about, but there were
probably many we dont know about, speculates
Poliakoff, who was awarded a CBE in 2007.
While the armed forces concerned themselves
with the coming Cold War, Britain was also left facing
a more familiar enemy, in the form of the Blackshirts.
Poliakoff calls it mind-boggling that Oswald
Moseleys Union Movement came to prominence
again, just months after the war had come to its

conclusion. It was a horrible disease, like eczema

on the body of Britain and a terrible affront to people
that it was here, he says.
But its equally the human story beneath world
events that Poliakoff tries to draw out in his drama,
showing how the war affected surviving soldiers,
many of whom experienced post-traumatic stress
disorder, as well as those left behind on the home
front.
Poliakoff can still recall seeing, as a child, the
devastation in London years after the war had ended,
while his parents, who lived in Kensington, experienced the events of the Blitz first-hand.
The award-winning writer, who has two children
with wife and fellow screenwriter Sandy Welch, tells
me: The V2s were raining down within weeks of the
end of the war. People lost homes, their loved ones
and had witnessed horrific things. But they wanted
to address the future and not concern themselves
with the immediate past.
Instead, they were left to battle on their own
with their demons.

Art Spiegelman, the creator of Maus, talks to Fiona Leckerman about his love of graphic
novels, his new show and why his most famous work will never be transformed into a film

I made a promise then that I had to finish

the book, but once it was done I promised
never to do the Holocaust again and I have
since tried to keep that promise.
It is only recently that Spiegelman touched
on the Holocaust again, but he is quick to
assert: Im not a Holocaust expert I just
happen to have lived through parents who
gave me a doctorate in it.
Speaking about the effect of growing up
with two parents who survived such atrocities, he reflects: I think everybody is defined
by their parents history.
My father wasnt willing to talk to me

when I was a kid, but came forth when
I was older. My mother had it leaking into
conversations all the time without any
context and obviously it affected me.
I am a child of a survivor, but they cant
be allowed to define you, because they stop
you from being human.
As the conversation flows on, Spiegelman
is keen to discuss the latest book he has
been working on, a retrospective of his close
friend, Jewish artist Si Lewen.

of Lewen, a refugee from Nazi Germany,

who arrived in New York in 1935 and died
recently at the age of 98.
This is the first time I have returned
to the topic of the Holocaust and it is for a
number of complex reasons, Spiegelman
says. After Maus, every offer that I could
imagine came along to make a movie, but
I never had any desire for that.
Still, he concedes: I am very grateful to
Maus because it has allowed for my other
follies, like Wordless! and beyond, which
keeps me thinking, breathing and experimenting.
Speaking of his latest show, which he
describes as intellectual vaudeville,
Spiegelman says: Its the most fantastic
thing we have ever done and why we keep
going out of our way to perform it.
He adds: Ive never seen anything like
it before. Its a hybrid medium that doesnt
translate into anything else, a lecture about
words and pictures and how they fight with
each other and how they supplement each
other and what happens when you remove
one of those elements in a more and more
visual culture.

chasing me wherever I go, admits
Art Spiegelman, the Pulitzer Prizewinning cartoonist who is behind the
renowned Holocaust memoir, Maus.
First published in 1980, Spiegelmans work
sparked controversy and debate by translating the events of the Second World War
into a graphic novel, where Jews are famously
depicted as mice and Nazis as cats.
The 68-year-old Swedish-born artist
is making coffee when we speak about his
touring show, Wordless! It is an exploration of
graphic novels through history set to music by
jazz composer Phillip Johnston, and arrives at
the Barbican in London tomorrow (Friday).
Ahead of his trip to London, Spiegelman
wants to know if the weather is cold enough to
warrant taking a coat, admitting an overt part
of his Jewish identity is his extreme anxiety,
something he acquired from his incredibly
anxious, Holocaust-survivor parents, who
both feature in Maus.
Before his seminal work was published,
The New Yorker recalls that he previewed it
at a Holocaust conference to an audience of
mostly retired Jews.
One of them gets up and says: Couldnt
you wait until we were dead to make fun of
us? I felt like I was facing an audience of my
fathers. I explained that although its a comic,
it doesnt mean that its funny and Im not
making fun of you.

Having a Rhine old time!

Mark Silver takes a luxury river cruise through
Europe, uncovering a dark side of Jewish history,
medieval castles and a plot to assassinate Hitler
he tour guide took me by surprise.

Yet another story of Jews being
persecuted? Surely not this time,
I thought, as we stood in front of a
chapel in the German town of Bacharach.
My wife and I were on a river cruise along
the fabulous Rhine, where glorious medieval
villages and towns are sprinkled within easy
reach and leave you feeling as though you have
just entered a film set.
Tales of Jews suffering during the Dark Ages
were all too frequent, but I was not expecting
more tales of woe as we gazed at the impressive
chapel ruins.
Werner was a 16-year-old Christian who was
murdered on this site back in 1287, explained the
guide. No one had a clue who did it but guess
what? the Jews were blamed.
It led to revenge killings across Europe, the
victim becoming Saint Werner and the chapel
constructed in his honour. Fortunately, the
German king at the time, and later the Pope, did
not believe the Jews were responsible and they
were eventually exonerated.
It was another interesting story during a
week of fascinating information amid stunning
sites and, thanks to American holiday company
Tauck, we were also pampered galore.
We woke up early for much of the sightseeing

but, with an exciting day ahead, my alarm clock
was actually a welcome noise.
I have experienced several river cruises and
this was the best so far. Organisation, service
and food were exceptional. We were invited on
to Taucks newest vessel, Grace, and it proved a
most comfortable choice.
Cruises are all-inclusive, although the joke
wore a bit thin on my birthday when the 10th
person offered to buy me a drink.
It was our second cruise along the Rhine
and we were seeing a tiny piece of Holland,
Germany, France and Switzerland, having
boarded in Amsterdam and finishing in Basel.
If you want a lazy week doing little, then
this is not the holiday for you. If you dont mind
those early starts to see a collection of gems,
such as medieval castles, houses from the

1500s, cathedrals from even earlier and treasures from Roman times, then look no further.
Amsterdam proved a great start. It was
our first time in the Dutch capital and what
a beautiful place it is to stroll around, with
its many restaurants, cafs, museums and, of
course, canals. We did wander along the famous
Red Light District as curiosity got the better of
us, and also popped into sweet shops where
chocolate bars with cannabis are readily (and
legally) for sale.
Theres nothing wrong with browsing, but
it brought a chuckle when the subject came
up that night of how people had spent their
day. Funnily enough, our dinner companions
seemed to have found the same streets!
Not everybody went to see the Anne Frank
House, but we were glad we did. These days,
you need to book an online ticket to visit
between 9am and 3.30pm. After that you join a
long queue, but it was worth it as we heard the
remarkable tale of how Anne and her family hid
from the Nazis for more than two years. The
museum is open every day except Yom Kippur
and, even if you think you know the story, is a
must-see when in Amsterdam.
The following day we were part of Taucks
fine itinerary, involving a delightful canal ride
followed by a visit to the Rijksmuseum, dedicated to arts and history.
Art galleries are not normally my thing, but
both my wife, Liudmila, and I loved it as our
guide showed the detail in some of Rembrandts
finest work, including The Night Watch.
When you cruise with a top company, there
is sometimes a very special treat in store. Here
Tauck is every bit as good at surreal evenings as,
Mark and Liudmila at ease during their trip
the next day, we enjoyed a spectacular reception

and dinner at Schloss Ehreshoven, a moated
castle in Germany now housing a charitable
foundation that cares for elderly Catholic ladies.
The venue is stunning and we were treated
like royalty from the moment we left Taucks
comfortable coaches to enjoy champagne and
canaps before a memorable dinner, with live
classical music throughout.
In between, a foundation chief gave us
a quick tour which included a viewing of a
portrait of his relative, Philipp von Boeselager,
who was part of the German plot to assassinate
Hitler but was never caught.
If I had to choose a favourite time from the
week (not an easy task), it would be our afternoon in Riquewihr.
This village in the Alsace region is mindblowingly beautiful and that feeling of being on a
film set was never truer than here an appropriate feeling in some ways, given that Tauck
goes that extra mile to make you feel like a star.

Dr Jane Zuckerman from the Royal Free London Travel
Health and Immunisation Clinic gives her travel health tips
ts never been so easy to travel the

world, writes Deborah Cicurel. With the
internet giving us unprecedented access
to far-flung destinations, a quick glance
at online booking companies or a call to a
travel agent is often all we need to make our
feelings of wanderlust a reality.
But we can often overlook the most important element when travelling: our health.
Dr Jane Zuckerman, consultant and clinical
lead in travel medicine at the Royal Free London
Travel Health and Immunisation Clinic, has
practised travel medicine since 1995, helping
more than 10,000 people a year to travel safely,
and winning awards along the way, including the
UK Hospital Doctor of the Year Award in 2001.
According to Zuckerman, its crucial to start
thinking about protecting yourself medically
months before you embark on your trip.
Travel medicine is all about preventing
illness in people who travel and the best way to
guard against any tropical disease would be to
seek travel health advice from a travel clinic at
least four weeks before travelling, she says.
This way, a travel health practitioner can
discuss the risk of the relevant tropical disease to
which a traveller may be exposed.
The ability to travel the world is no longer
a luxury and the important considerations to
take into account when travelling are the safety
and security at the destination and to seek travel
health advice to understand if there are any
specific health risks for the planned itinerary.
THE BEST WAY TO

DISEASE IS TO SEEK
ADVICE BEFORE
YOU TRAVEL
One of the biggest misconceptions about

travel medicine is that its really costly. However,
Zuckerman says, there are several important
travel vaccines that are available on the NHS,
including diphtheria, polio and tetanus a
combined vaccine as well as typhoid, cholera
and hepatitis A, including when given as a
combined typhoid or hepatitis B vaccine.
These vaccines are usually free because they
protect against diseases thought to represent the
greatest risk to public health if they were brought
into the country, Zuckerman says. Travel
vaccines that are available privately include
hepatitis B when not given as a combined
hepatitis A vaccine, Japanese encephalitis, tickborne encephalitis, meningitis vaccines, rabies,
tuberculosis (TB) and yellow fever.
Another misconception is that travel vaccines
can be uncomfortable, something Zuckerman
handles regularly, using a number of ways to
calm patients who are wary of needles.
I sometimes see patients who are anxious,
but cope with this by being very sympathetic,
very gentle, doing certain things to prevent
fainting or panic attacks, not rushing the
appointment and by applying the art of subtle
distraction when I give an injection, she says.
Despite several patients telling me, I never
realised that I have a gentle touch until the time
my mother who always told me the truth told
me I could give her injections any time.
I have developed a reputation for being able
to help patients with needle phobia have vaccinations, both for travel and general vaccinations.
Having a good experience following vaccination
is invaluable to people who have needle phobia
and I hope to help make a difference in this way.
But its not just needles that scare Zuckermans patients: many travellers can become
concerned about the side effects of certain drugs,
such as malaria tablets.
They are an essential feature in the prevention of malaria, Zuckerman says. There are
different malaria tablets that can be prescribed
and tailored to the specific needs of a traveller

following a travel health risk assessment.
I recommend a travel health practitioner
discusses the choice of malaria tablets available,
taking into consideration their itinerary and any
underlying health conditions.
However, taking malaria
tablets is not all you have to do
to protect yourself against the
disease, warns Zuckerman.
None of the malaria tablets
provide 100 percent protection
and so it is essential for travellers to use bite avoidance measures, such as wearing loose,
long-sleeved clothing and using
50 percent DEET insect repellent
in addition to taking malaria tablets
to reduce the risk of getting
malaria., she adds.
There are plenty of other challenges for

the doctor, but Zuckerman says: The most
rewarding aspect of my job is enabling a person
with underlying health problems to travel to
their dream destination.
But do we need to visit the doctor straight
away if we have a tropical holiday planned, or is
research possible from home? Zuckerman says
there is plenty people can do to educate themselves before deciding on a final destination.
There are several excellent websites, which
are really user friendly and provide reliable
information on vaccinations and travel health
advice, she says, recommending Fit for Travel
(fitfortravel.nhs.uk), the Foreign Office Travel
Advice (gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice) and
the Royal Free London Travel Health &
Immunisation Clinic (royalfreeprivatepatients.com/treatments-and-services/
travel-clinic).
So go ahead, book that dream trip,
dust down your suitcase and invest in
some new flip-flops. Just make sure
you see Dr Zuckerman first.

Q My sons eczema never
seems to get better, despite

the creams we use. Where
are we going wrong?
I doubt you are going wrong, but it is

important to realise eczema isnt curable
but waxes and wanes throughout childhood. That is tedious and distressing for
both children and parents, but a good
treatment regime can really make a huge
difference.
For good control, your prescription
should really look like a shopping list
including a number of items. Firstly, emollients these are creams that add muchneeded oil to the dryness of eczema.
There are a huge number to try, so if
you dont like the first one prescribed, try

another one. You should be using it at least
four times a day: you cannot overdose on
emollient, so apply it liberally.
Second, you need bath products avoid
all the scented usual ones and use a bath
emollient, which is oil you add to the bath
to make it moisturising. You can buy these
without prescription as well as aqueous
cream to use instead of soap.
Steroids are next: they calm down the
eczema. They come in a variety of different
potencies, and your doctor will recommend
which strength is appropriate for your
son. Parents are overly afraid of steroids,
but they are far better for your skin than
eczema is.
You should also consider an anti-histamine to break his itch-scratch cycle and
remember to avoid all irritants such as sun
creams and washing powders: you can find
a list of safe ones on eczema.org.

when the problem seems to progress in
noticeable steps rather than gradually.
But you should remember there are
also other causes of dementia such as
Parkinsons disease, as well as dementia
from infections or injury.
Treatment for dementia differs
according to the cause: people with
vascular dementia will be put on the same
medication that we use to prevent strokes,
for example blood pressure control and
statins, with the aim to reduce chances of
further episodes.
Other dementias may also have specific
drugs depending on the stage at diagnosis.
This is because often drugs are used only
for early-stage disease.

Your fertility actually starts to decline
after 35 the chance of conceiving at
that age is half that of women in their
early 20s. Then conception rates drop off
dramatically after 40.
In a couple trying for a baby, 94

38 years old, only 77 percent would
conceive after the same period.
However, it is important to stress
that a huge number of women who are
aged over 40 do conceive naturally and
have healthy normal pregnancies with
healthy normal babies.
In 2014, for the first time there were
more births recorded to women over the
age of 35 than to women under 25, and
year-on-year the fertility rate for the
over-40s is rising.
It is also important to bear in mind
that being pregnant when you are over
the age of 40 does carry risks of illness
for the mother and her baby, as well as a
risk of miscarriage.
As with many things in life, it is a
balance of pros and cons yes there are
medical reasons to have babies younger,
but there are often social and psychological reasons for a woman to wait.

What does the Torah say about: Sado-masochism and torture

The backdrop to the Torahs introduction to the first Jew and
perhaps greatest revolutionary of all time is highly significant.
Abram is born to the generation that tried to build the Tower
of Babel and was subsequently dispersed across the world.
Rav Shimshon Raphael Hirsch explains how this grandiose
project relegated men to being less significant than bricks and
gave rise to the notion that any value held sacred by the majority ought to be automatically revered by the individual.
Enter Abram with his first prophecy, defining the Jewish
journey for all time. Lech Lecha (Go for yourself, go your
own way! No person can ever say: Well, I am as good and
honest as everyone else around me, so thats good enough.
Lech Lecha is a call to teach us we are individually responsible to God for our personal conduct. Abram is therefore known
as haivri, (from the other side); on one side of the metaphorical river with all humanity on the other. He goes it alone.
The first call to the first Jew carries the secret of Jewish survival. Abram imbued his descendants with the courage to be a
minority, to stand firm with our values and heritage.

where his nationality and identity were formed, his birthplace
where he had civic status and independence and his home, the
private sphere where he had been looked after, to commit to

midrash tells how a love tryst with a

Cain killed his brother apparently
swiftly. By contrast, torture as an instrument of death first appears in the book
of Joshua. Canaanite king Adoni Bezeq
was known for cutting off his adversaries
thumbs and toes cut off and having them
forage under his table for scraps. Adoni
certainly had a sado-masochistic personality disorder. On capturing him, Joshua
showed no mercy and executed him.
Perhaps knowledge of sadistic disorders and the possibility they may mitigate horrific crimes was unknown to our
ancestors. Nonetheless, there is no excuse
for sexually causing harm to any person.
Even unintentional damage caused
during normal spousal relations must
be financially compensated according to

Jewish law.
Jutting has claimed he was abused
during his youth and that his father killed
himself. An educated person presumably
of substantial financial means, he would
have had access to the best help.
Torturing the victim is greater than the
sin of murder itself. King Saul was right to
ask his arms bearer to finish him before
his enemies reached him; his death pains
had already taken hold.

column, taking a wry look at some
of our most familiar religious texts

The Akedah (Binding)

of Isaac: Genesis 22:1-19
On its literal reading, the Akedah
known often as the sacrifice rather than
the binding of Isaac is challenging for
anyone of a Progressive mindset.
The narrative lends itself to the idea
that God intends to witness Abraham
sacrifice his son Isaac, having just
expelled his other child, Ishmael, into
the desert.
It is possible to have some sympathy
for Abraham who, despite repeated
demonstrations of loyalty to God, is
once again asked to prove himself by
passing another cruel and bizarre test.
But the most telling question is to ask
who is really being tested in the story.
Despite the Christian portrayal
of Isaac as a small boy, he is, in fact
according to Jewish legend, a strapping
teenager who is capable of carrying the
wood on the fateful journey.
His father is an elderly man and the
midrash paints a picture of him being
physically incapable of binding Isaac,

who is required to assist in his own

restraint as he faces possible demise.
This apparent bravery of Isaac raises
the challenge of how loyal must one be
to ones parents to fulfil the fifth of the
Ten Commandments. The Akedah is
about Isaacs starring moment.
He is prepared to pay the price, but
God relents and the ram enters the
history of the Jewish people.
What can Progressive Jews learn
from this story that sees God demanding
Isaacs death? We learn that sometimes
we must say no to God even when
traditionally wed be expected to obey.
As the Progressive Student Chaplain visiting and supporting all

Ireland, regardless of their affiliation
anti-Israel sentiment on campus is
something I think about regularly.
My role is to protect and include
all Jewish students and never dismiss
or diminish their concerns.
However, I also try to be a moderating, balancing voice on this issue,
as I firmly believe the fear and panic
that some of us non-students in the
Jewish community feel over this
question is hurting our youth.
First because, as Josh Nagli, the
campaign director for the Union of
Jewish Students (UJS) reminded us

in his recent Jewish News blog post,
we need to let our Jewish students
speak for themselves.
Second, our own anxieties around
how anti-Israel sentiment can be
a mask for anti-Semitism actually
blinds us to the vibrant Israel engagement and debate with Jews and nonJews happening on campus.
David Brown, executive director of
UJS, recently wrote: Just as we must
never let our Judaism be defined by
what were against, we cannot allow
distressing but disparate incidents
or our reactions to them cloud our
view of the broader and better picture
THE FEARS AND PANIC WE FEEL

OVER ANTI-ISRAEL SENTIMENT
IS HURTING OUR YOUTH
for Jewish life on campus.

There are and have been some
high-profile concerns and flash
points. Its the duty of anyone
supporting Jewish students or a
loving and open world to denounce
these incidents and to take serious
steps to address the growing hatred
among this minority and radical
fringe. But whenever questions
around Israel/Palestine are raised
more generally, I and UJS and others
see over and over again that students
reject hate and embrace dialogue.
In the messy world of student
politics and in the fraught conversations around Israel/Palestine and
anti-Semitism on campus, dialogue,
engagement and education is
happening constantly and increasing.
Without
diminishing
real
concerns, I wouldnt want our fears to
weaken that vibrant and flourishing
reality for Jewish students.

Acclaimed chef Theo Randall has opened a casual

Italian restaurant in the boutique Hotel Indigo in Kensington. Theos Simple Italian serves rustic Italian dishes

lunch and dinner. Expect a great range of cicchetti,
plus expertly-cooked pasta and a range of meaty/fishy

Being a food writer means the odd invitation may come
your way, and I was lucky enough recently to be invited
to a very special lunch. Food Story, the UKs newest
kosher caterer, hosted a tasting event at Claridges to
showcase some of its new dishes. So it was off with the
tracksuit and trainers, on with the dress and heels, out of
the door and off to Londons premier hotel. Its a tough
job, but someone has to do it.
Perfectly-chilled champagne and lemon and
sumac non-alcoholic cocktails accompanied a
A restaurant specialising in crisps (yes, really!) is

opening in Soho. Hipchips will be cooking crisps
from five varieties of potato, all grown in the north
of England, and serving them on a conveyor belt,
together with special dips. Head chef Scott Davis
has spent two years developing the concept in
his kitchen. The sauces range from smoky cheese
fondue to dessert options such as smores and
chocolate.

were seated at an on-trend long table
(round tables are so last year), dressed
with contemporary woven linen and
artistically enhanced with blooms by
resident Claridges florist McQueens.
Then we were walked through four
Acts of the most refined kosher cook-
ing: a light, soft sole with sauce vierge and

basil; tender lamb with a hint of smokiness from blackened aubergine, nicely
balanced with a creamy tahini; sea bass
with Israeli couscous and lemon pure;
and then, to finish, smores with banana
pure and marshmallow.
The dream team behind Food Story
comprises chef David Swann, formerly
of Gordon Ramsay and the Fat Duck, and
managing director Matt Rickard, formerly of the Mandarin Oriental.

things to happen the other
way round but thats exactly
the state of play at Pan-Asian
restaurant Tootoomoo in
Islington. Owner Philip
McGuinness had the genius
idea of shoving the kitchen
downstairs in the basement
and opening up the ground
floor space into a cosy, quirky
restaurant with rustic yet
colourful dcor and room
enough for 24 covers.
Its one of those big, little places big personality,
little restaurant; big flavours,
little menu; big satisfaction,
little bill. A range of 3 to
6.50 dishes includes yuzu
salmon maki, veggie potstickers (like a gyoza, but shaped

like samosas and even more
tasty), a delicious sweet and
savoury seaweed salad with
sesame dressing (standout dish for me), a classic
duck and watermelon salad
with cashews and hoisin, a
stunning rendang curry with
meltingly tender beef, and
oh-so-moreish Singapore
noodles with chicken. To
quench your thirst, 7 fetches you a classic Caipirinha
cocktail or the house special
Tootoomojito, among others,
plus there are spirits, beers
and wine. Dessert is frozen
yoghurt its just the right
finale to this type of feast,
and, if youre feeling decadent, you can top it with

Oreos or chocolate.
Tootoomoo is slowly
expanding across north London, with branches in Crouch
End, Whetstone and now
Islington, plus a takeaway in
Highgate.
The Whetstone branch
has just doubled in size and
can now seat around 80 in
more space and comfort (and
less noise!) than before, with
the option for private hire for
parties.
Takeaway is a big story
at Tootoomoo and if youre
lucky enough to live in a
relevant postcode, even the
cocktails can be delivered to
your door in cute jam jars,
no less!

Four suspected ISIS terrorists

have been arrested in Albania
for plotting to attack Israeli
footballers ahead of their 2018
World Cup qualifier in the
country on Saturday.
The plot was uncovered
by Israels counter-terrorism
bureau, who have advised
Israeli fans from travelling to
Albania. The match, which
was due to be played in
Shkoder, will now take place
closer to the capital Tirana,
although Israeli officials
wanted the game to be played

after match fizzing with anger

has denied accusations that his side
carried out acts of thuggery and
premeditated violence during
their match against Oakwood B on
Sunday which ended with Shoomans
goalkeeper squirting Lucozade at Os
manager Jason Stein.
Stein claimed the Greens played the
game to let off some anger, and had the
contents of a bottle of the energy drink
aimed at him after the full-time whistle of
the 3-3 MGBSFL Division One clash.
However, Shooman refuted Steins
allegations, saying: I dont understand
his comments. Was he watching the same
game as I was?
There wasnt one bad foul in the
game. It was played at a fast pace, at least
by us, maybe he couldnt keep up. Mind
you, he did look a little hot and bothered
at the end of the match, maybe my goalkeeper was trying to cool him down. Very
thoughtful of him I think.
Claiming some of the football Faith-
fold played was more suited to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Stein said:
Im not sure where to begin. It was more
UFC than football and unfortunately
Faithfold came to fight, not play. After
five minutes you could see that certain
players came to let some anger off.
At times it was thuggery. We lost
Dan Ash to suspected ligament damage
the second opposition player who has
been put out of football by Faithfold this
season.
After the game I tried to shake hands
with their goalkeeper who promptly
squirted Lucozade at me and shoved me.
The referee, who had an impossible job,
at least booked him.
Faced with such levels of calculated
and premeditated violence, my players
had to stick up for themselves. Someone
one day is going to be very seriously hurt
by those UFC stars.
The game itself saw Daniel Seligman,
Jake Sorkin and James Abrams score for
the Os, with Stuart Haring, Craig Cole
and Craig Edwards earning Faithfold a
point.
Shooman added: We gifted them
their first two goals, the first was a really

really happy to still have the
Star of David on my shorts
and also want to continue
promoting the Jewish
