Typhoon Haiyan a.k.a Typhoon Yolanda
Last November 8, 2015, thousands of lives were shaken and lost when the Typhoon
Haiyan, also called as Typhoon Yolanda hit the Philippines. It was one of the most destructive
and powerful typhoons that ever struck the world. Heavy rains, strong winds and storm surge
tore down homes, trees and buildings as well as lives of those people who are affected.
Haiyan intensified and accelerated as it moved closer to Philippines because deep warm
water in the Pacific fueled Haiyans intensification and Haiyan has low wind shear which means
that winds do not change much in direction or speed. This factors allowed Haiyan to be a Super
Typhoon as if landfall in the Philippines.
Some areas in the Philippines were placed under state of the calamity but Tacloban is the
most affected place in the Philippines, it was given a signal #4 before Haiyans landfall. As it hits
the Philippines, Tacloban suffered from strong winds, heavy rains and even a storm surge.
A storm surge is a rise in sea level that occurs during typhoons. The storms produce strong winds
that push the water into shore, which can lead to flooding. This makes storm surges very
dangerous for coastal regions. Storm surge wiped out the whole city, destructed buildings and
agriculture and killed many lives. The death toll will never be known with certainty, but several
thousands of people tragically lost their lives in the storm and tens of thousands of others lost
their homes and possessions. Communication lines were down which makes the situation worse.
Survivor roam around, shocked, traumatized, unsure of where to go next. Some looked for their
relatives while others helped injured survivors.
Many lives were taken away. Houses and livelihoods were destroyed. Children were
orphaned. There are more missing individuals. Corpses are strewn everywhere. These are the
aftermath of the tragedy. Yolanda attacked for a day only but it cause so much heartache for the
victims and even survivors of it.. Despite of the tragedy happened in the Philippines, we can see
the efforts of our fellow Filipinos who did relief efforts and medications for the affected citizens.
Filipinos shows kindness, giving efforts without expecting anything in return. Different countries
also gives their efforts and helped the Philippines moved on with the tragedy. Also, this calamity
serves as the lesson for the Filipinos to be aware of different effect of typhoons.
There is a rainbow always after the rain. It is just good to know that there might be
tragedy happened in our country Filipinos say together to stand again and overcome the tragedy
happened.
