Ash-Shahaadataan

The wording of ash-Shahaadataan is:

Ash-hadu an la elahailla-Allaah
wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullaah
I bear witness that there is no deity (worthy of
worship) but Allaah, and I bear witness that
Muhammad is the messenger of Allaah.

This means that a Muslim believes that Allaah alone is the

Creator of everything. He is the only One who sustains,
controls, provides and takes care of His creation. He created
everything like the sky, the earth, the sun, and the moon. He
controls when the night and day comes, He controls when it
rains and when it snows. Allaah also gives us everything we
need like food, clothing, and shelter. He heals us when we are
sick and He is the one who gives us life. A Muslim believes in
all of Allaahs most Beautiful Names and Attributes, and
a Muslim believes that Allaah alone, and no one else, is the
only one who is deserving of worship. A Muslim also believes
that Allaah, by His Mercy sent His Messenger Muhammad
(sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam), and revealed to him the
Quraan, and commanded him to convey Islaam to all of the
Aalameen. We must love him (sallallaahu alayhi wa salam),
learn about him, and follow his sunnah.

The Muslim believes that Allaah has commanded every

sane adult Muslim to pray the five prayers, every day.
When a Muslim prays, he or she must be pure and
clean; he or she must have wudhu. Every day, when a
Muslim prays, he or she stands before their Lord
thanking Him for His blessings, asking Him of His bounty,
asking Him to forgive their sins. They also ask Him for

Zakat

Allaah has given some people a lot of money to test them to

see if they will be grateful to Him for the wealth He has given
them, and Allaah created some people poor to test them to
see if they will be patient with not having a lot of money. We
are one ummah and we show compassion, kindness, love
and mercy toward one another. Allaah has ordered the
Muslims to pay zakaah which is taken from the rich and given
to the poor. Zakaah purifies and cleanses wealth, and purifies
the soul from stinginess and miserliness. It strengthens the
love between the rich and poor, takes away hatred, makes

Sawmu
Ramadaan

Each day during the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast. They

have the intention that from the break of dawn until sunset
they will not eat or drink anything to please Allaah. Muslims
fast from dawn until sunset during Ramadan because, in the

Many Muslims break their fast with

Quran, Allaah says (what translated means), O you who

believe! Observing As-Sawm (the fasting) is prescribed for you

20

19

as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may

become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious)[al-Baqarah: 183]. Fasting
helps a Muslim get closer to Allaah, it helps a Muslim stay
away from the things that Allaah does not like and has told us
to avoid, it helps a Muslim work on being more patient, and
fasting also helps Muslims compete to do more good deed.

For iftar, we eat many different foods. Some foods are shown below.

Hajj

In the Quran, Allaah says (what translated means), And Hajj

(pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Kabah) is a duty that
mankind owes to Allaah, those who can afford the expenses;
and whoever disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to
Makkah), then he is a disbeliever of Allaah], then Allaah stands
not in need of any of the Aalameen (mankind, jinn and all that
exists) [Aal Imraan: 97] . This is why, each year, millions of
Muslims go to Makkah to make Hajj. The time of Hajj is the
tenth month, eleventh month, and the first ten days of the
twelfth month of the Islaamic calendar.
