TOADMs/FOADMs at a site and then connect the lines of the TOADMs/FOADMs
to other TOADMs/FOADMs in the network. The user specifies how the
user-generated WDM links are routed. The EPT will then complete the design
automatically.
Automatic wavelength assignment with Manual override

Protection

OPS protection is supported only for TOADM and DFOADM nodes on PSS-32 NEs.
Only 11STAR1, 11STMM10, 11STGE12, and Alien (SVAC) OTs can be used with
OPS protection.
OPS Dual Transponder Protection supports a single fiber handoff at source and
destination sites. Each demand endpoint uses redundant transponders to provide a
higher level of circuit availability. Both endpoints must use OPS packs and have
matching transponder types. This configuration is supported for PSS-32 NEs using
11STAR1, 11STMM10, 11STGE12, and SVAC transponders.
OPS Single Transponder Protection supports a single fiber handoff at source and
destination sites. Each demand endpoint uses a transponder to provide a higher level of
circuit availability at a lower cost. Both endpoints must use OPS packs and have
matching transponder types. This configuration is supported for PSS-32 NEs using
11STAR1, 11STMM10, 11STGE12, and SVAC transponders.
If the protected demands A-end has OPS protection, the protected demands other end
must also have OPS protection. If the protected demands A-end has OPS protection
with an Alien OT, the protected demands other end must also use OPS protection with
the Alien OT.
Client 1+1 Y Cable Protection

Client 1+1 Y-cable protection is supported on PSS-32 NEs only.

Introduction

Features

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

The Y-cable protection groups on the NE are client port-based. The EPT currently only
supports wavelength demand routing, so a wavelength demand is called Client 1+1 Y
cable, although some client ports may not be configured with Y-cable protection.
Y-cable demand endpoints use two matching OTs at each demand endpoint. Both the
port number and configuration of the protected client port at the source site must
match the client port number and configuration at the destination site.
ESNCP 1+1

Electrical SubNetwork Connection Protection (ESNCP 1+1) provides line signal

protection by selecting between the two line signal ports on dual port OTs. It supports
a single fiber handoff at source and destination sites and protects against fiber cuts and
line side optics failure. ESNCP 1+1 protection is only supported on the PSS-1.
Diverse Path Protection

Diverse path protection eliminates all single point failures associated with a WDM
demand. Redundant transponders are equipped at each endpoint, while fiber and node
diverse routes are calculated by the EPT. The EPT attempts to use the same DWDM
channel for the diverse (two paths) through the network but may choose different
channels if the same channel is unavailable. Diverse path protection is only supported
on the PSS-32.
Dual Homed Protection

In a dual homed protection configuration, dual transponders at the source site are
diversely routed to two different destination sites, each with a single transponder. All
transponders at source and destination sites must be of the same type. The EPT
attempts to use the same DWDM channel between the pairs of source and destination
sites but may choose alternative channels if the same channel is not available. Dual
homed protection is only supported on the PSS-32.
Optical Transmission Calculation

The EPT calculates the optical transmission of each demand:

Calculates power and OSNR evolution for each connection path

Calculates dispersion evolution for each path

Calculates non-linear phase shift for each path

Calculates PMD for each path

Calculates required OSNR for each path

Introduction

Features

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

User Wavelength Assignment

The User Wavelength Assignment feature provides different methods for a user to
specify wavelengths:

You can specify a wavelength for a WDM demand before the design is run. The
system designs the network using your specified wavelengths. The system assigns
wavelengths for those demands that have a user-specified wavelength first, then
assigns wavelengths to the remaining demands. If the user-specified wavelength is
not available for the demand as routed, the demand will fail.

You can reassign a wavelength to a demand after the design is completed.

You can route the demand manually. The EPT will display the routing options, and
after you select an option, the EPT displays the channel(s) for the selected route.
You can then select any available channel before completing routing.

Virtual Demand Features

The EPT supports virtual WDM demands to validate the network design against all
possible traffic scenarios without adding additional equipment to the network.

Any-to-any and point-to-point virtual WDM demands are supported.

Virtual demands are supported by homogeneous SFD44 nodes.

Virtual demands may originate or terminate at any TOADM site (a site that has
Optical Add/Drop capabilities). Virtual demands cannot originate or terminate at
ILA or Glass-through sites.
Virtual demands support all protection types except ESNCP 1+1.

Dual-homed and OPS protected virtual demands are not allowed.

Virtual demands:
May be routed over a WDM link that has no remaining available channels

Are never regenerated

Are not assigned to channels

May result in the creation of optical line common equipment
(TOADM/FOADMs and WDM links)
May not be changed to real or real to virtual

Cannot be routed between separate nodes within a site

Manual Slot Assignment

In the 1830 PSS EPT, you can manually select the desired shelf and slot number and
move the pack to the desired location. After selecting the required details, you can
submit the changes and move the packs to the desired location. For more details, see
Reconfiguring Circuit Pack Slots (p. 4-14).
Note: For DCMs and SFD44s, the DCM shelf number or SFD44 shelf number
respectively can be changed (not the slot).

Introduction

Features

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

You cannot change the slot assignment for required packs such as the Equipment
Controller and PF.
This feature is applicable only for PSS-32 NEs (on Universal Shelf only), not for
PSS-1 NEs.
Multiple Nodes Per NE

Each PSS-32 NE contains one or more nodes all controlled with a single management
interface using a single SID (System Identifier). Each node supports the passing of
WDM demands between lines without the need for OEO conversion. Demands must
use OEO regeneration to pass from one node to another.
There are four types of PSS-32 nodes:

TOADM: Tunable Optical Add Drop Multiplexer. Each line contains a CWR
(Colorless Wavelength Router). Demands may be passed from any incoming line to
any other outgoing line under software control. SFDs (Static Filter DWDM) are
optionally used to add and drop channels from lines.
DFOADM: DWDM Fixed Optical Add Drop Multiplexer. Each Line is optionally
equipped with SFDs to add and drop demands and to pass demands from one line
to another. All optical connections for adding dropping and passing though
connection are made with optical jumpers.
CFOADM: CWDM Fixed Optical Add Drop Multiplexer. Similar to the DFOADM
except SFCs (Static Filter CWDM) are used to route demands over CWDM
channels.
ILA: In Line Amplifier is used to amplify DWDM line signals without adding or
dropping any traffic.

The PSS-1 supports only one type of node, the ECFOADM (Edge CWDM Fixed
Optical Add Drop Multiplexer which provides CFOADM functionality in the PSS-1.
EPT Shelf Support

The PSS-32 NE supports a maximum of 24 universal and a maximum of 24 DCM and

SFD shelves, for a total of 48 shelves. The DCM and SFD shelf numbering starts at
25.
Note: Although the Release 1.0 universal shelf support is limited to 8 shelves, the
EPT displays the limit of 24 universal shelves.

Introduction

Functionality

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Functionality
Network Commissioning

The EPT allows you to export network designs to the 1354RM Photonic Manager
(1354RM-PhM). The 1354RM-PhM can then commission the network, confirming
circuit pack placement and connectivity between the components, and provisioning
power and gain settings. For the procedure to commission the network, see
Commissioning File (p. 5-20).
The EPT also provides Power Commissioning and Card Inventory reports that you can
use to manually provision the network through the WebUI. For a description of these
reports, see Chapter 7, Reports.
Design Options

The EPT supports incremental design in phases, a feature that allows the user to freeze
a completed design and then add new components to the design without changing the
frozen part of the design. Sites, segments, connections, and demands may all be added
to a frozen design without modifying any part of the frozen design. The design must
be in the Complete Valid state to initiate a new design increment.
The EPT supports the initial design of 1830 PSS-based networks and routes. You can
initiate a new network design by setting the following parameters:

Network parameters

Site parameters

Segment parameters
WDM parameters

A network can be in one of the following states:

Not Designed: The network has never been processed by the EPT, has been
returned to the Not Designed state by having all of the design results removed, or
no WDM links or demands exist in the network. The network must be run as a
new design to become Completed.

Incomplete: One or more WDM links or demands is Not Designed.

Complete, Unverified: All WDM demands and links are complete, but not all have
been validated. A demand is considered complete if it has been routed. A link is
considered complete if the link has been routed, spans created, all OAs selected, all
DCMs selected, and all link parameters specified.

Complete, Invalid: All WDM demands and links are complete, but not all are valid,
or one of the system level tests has failed validation.
Complete, Valid: All WDM demands and links are complete and valid. All system,
WDM link, and demand validation tests are successful.

Introduction

Functionality

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

The Network Verification feature allows a user to modify attributes (such as fiber
characteristics), verify if the changes are valid, and decide whether to accept the
changes (if valid) or revert back to the original values. The Network Verification
feature can only be selected if the network design state is Complete. For details on this
procedure, see Verify Network (p. 6-6).
Design Procedures

The 1830 PSS EPT allows you to perform the following design procedures:

Add traffic to a network - The EPT allows you to add one or more WDM Demands
to a network. Once demands have been added to a network, the design state
changes to Incomplete until the demands are either manually or automatically
routed.
Delete WDM demands from a network - The EPT allows you to delete one or
more WDM demands from a network. All routing information for the deleted
demands is removed from the design file. Any equipment that is no longer required
is removed from the design.
Add sites and segments to a network - The EPT allows you to add one or more
sites and segments to a completed network or an incomplete network.
Delete sites from a network - The EPT allows you to delete one or more sites from
a network. The following related objects are deleted from the design file:
NEs at the deleted sites

Glass-through connections at the deleted sites

Segments that terminate at the deleted sites

WDM demands that terminate at the deleted sites

Equipment at the deleted sites

Equipment at other sites that supported WDM lines to the deleted sites
Routing of demands and links that were routed through the deleted sites

The EPT allows you to delete one or more segments from a network. The
following related objects are deleted from the design file:

WDM lines routed on the deleted segments

Equipment that supported a WDM line routed on the deleted segments

Routing of demands and links that are routed through the deleted segment

User Specification at Passthrough Locations--The user can select the types of NEs that
will be used by default if the site is a passthrough (that is, where demands are not
added or dropped at the site), in a combination of the following:

Glass Through, ILA, or TOADM

bundle contains the total number of segments, the number of designed segments, the
number of reserved segments, and the number of unused segments.
Demand bundle: The tooltip that is displayed when the cursor is placed over a demand
bundle contains the total number of demands. It contains a section for each type of
demand that is contained in the bundle with the total number of each: WDM Real
Demand and WDM Virtual Demands. Within each of the sections, the number of
designed, partially routed, and not designed demands of that type is displayed.
Software Upgrade Considerations

When upgrading the EPT from Release 1.0 to Release 1.1.0, additional fields are
displayed on some configuration windows. On the WDM Demand windows, you can
edit the client-side field values if the values selected by the EPT are incorrect.
Upgrading the EPT Application

To upgrade from a previous release to Release 1.1.0, all you have to do is install the
Release 1.1.0 software (see Installing the EPT on a PC (p. 2-3)).
Note: The EPT Release 1.1.0 supports the importing or opening of any design that
was created with Release 1.0.1. However, network designs that are created with
Release 1.0, but not used in Release 1.0.1 may not be successfully imported/opened
into Release 1.1.0.

Introduction
After launching the EPT tool, (see Launching the EPT Application (p. 2-6)), the
Main window is displayed with menus and a toolbar that provide the functions to
create and manage network designs, and the Design Options window is displayed (see
Figure 4-1, Design Options Window (p. 4-2)).
Figure 4-1 Design Options Window

After creating network design elements, you can clear all elements of the network and
produce a blank design map, click New Design on the toolbar. A warning window is
displayed to indicate that any work on the existing design since the last save will be
lost. To save the work to that point, click Save Design on the toolbar to save the
network design to a file on the PC . A window is displayed that allows you to specify
a file name if none was previously given. A saved network design file can be loaded
back into the tool to continue working on it by clicking Open Design on the toolbar.
A window is displayed that allows you to select the file to load. Whenever a network
design is associated with a file saved on the PC, the file name is shown in the window
title.
From the Information Tab, the details of sites, segments, spans (composed of
segments), NEs, demands, and glass-throughs are displayed in a tabulated format that
can be sorted by clicking on the table headings. Rows of the tables can be selected to
bring up a window showing the details of the selected item. In many cases, parameters
can be modified on the details windows. Some modifications will cause the network to
revert to a Not Designed or Incomplete state. In any case, the design verification
engine should be re-run after changes are made to any parameters.
The incremental design feature allows you to freeze a completed design and then add
new components to the design without changing anything in the frozen part of the
design. Sites, segments, connections, and demands may all be added to a frozen design
without modifying any part of the frozen design.

Network Design

Introduction

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

NE Creation

After creating a site, you have a choice to create an NE manually or allow the EPT to
create NEs automatically within your network. If you create NEs manually, you can
control and place NEs in the desired locations within your network, and choose each
NE type (TOADM, FOADM, degree-4, and so on). If you do not create NEs manually,
the EPT will automatically create NEs of appropriate type and location within your
network.
Node Creation

You can also create nodes in the network. You can select from three line and node
types: CWDM for the 1830 PSS-1 GBE Edge Device (denoted as ECFOADM),
DWDM for the 1830 PSS-32 (denoted as DFOADM or TOADM), and CWDM for the
1830 PSS-32 CFOADM).

Sites
Create Sites

The first step in designing a network is to place sites on the map.

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Right-click the desired map location and select Create Site(s). An icon representing
the newly created site will be positioned on the map with a default name (see Figure
4-2, Site Icon (Unequipped) (p. 4-4)).
Figure 4-2 Site Icon (Unequipped)

Place as many sites as needed in the network design. Additional sites may be added at
any time.
After configuring NEs, segments, and demand details, the site icon changes (see
Figure 4-3, Site Icon (Equipped) (p. 4-4)).
Figure 4-3 Site Icon (Equipped)

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

To simultaneously create a site and create a segment connecting the previous site to the
new site, press Ctrl while clicking on the map to add sites. You may close a ring by
placing the cursor over an existing site--in which case pressing Ctrl creates a segment
without placing a new site. Right-clicking on the map restores the normal operation of
the GUI.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

To move sites around on the canvas, click on each site and drag it to any location.

Notes:

1.

If the current draw beyond 63A requires packs to be installed in a separate shelf. draw
exceeds 27A, then 50A is used until current draw exceeds 45A when the 70A PF is used.
Checking both 30A and 70A power filters results in the 30A power filter to be used until
current draw exceeds 27A, then the 50A power filter is used until current draw exceeds
45A when the 70A power filter is used.

2.

By default, the EPT picks the PFDC50 power filter type for each PSS-32 Universal shelf
(2 for every PSS-32 shelf). The Power.xml file in the configuration/equipment folder
holds the power consumption for each pack. Each time a pack is added, the resulting sum
of power for all the packs in the shelf is verified to be under 50A. If the power is
exceeded when adding a pack, then a new shelf is created for the pack.

Commissioning File
Overview

This section describes how to partition links into rings or systems to be used for the
1354 RM-PhM Release 6.0 Photonic Manager (1354RM-PhM).
The EPT can generate commissioning files to communicate the information to the
1354RM-PhM the required to commission the network. The network must be divided
into systems for the purpose of commissioning. Each system must be a simple ring or
point-to-point linear configuration of NEs.
Note: More complex systems cannot be commissioned by the 1354RM-PhM. The
EPT supports network designs that cannot be automatically commissioned.
Note: When provisioning and commissioning a network consisting of multiple
systems, the network provisioning must always match the provisioning in the EPT;
otherwise the 1354RM-PhM provisioning and commissioning wizards may stop
prematurely. After provisioning and/or commissioning of a system using the
1354RM-PhM wizards, any change made to the provisioning of the system must be
reflected back in the EPT and new system commissioning file(s) generated before
running the 1354RM-PhM wizards again. For example, changing an OT line port
ITU channel in the NE after using the 1354RM-PhM wizards.
Before you begin

You should save the design before creating a commissioning file. The SID should be
entered for the NEs that are used in the system.
You cannot create a commissioning file unless the design state of your network is
Complete, Valid (see Design Options (p. 1-8)).

Installation Report

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Installation Report
The Installation report defines all the internal physical electrical and optical
connections, XFP/SFP pluggable connections, attenuator connections, etc required by
the design for each node (see Figure 7-11, Installation Report (p. 7-14)).
Note: Connections to external equipment (anything that is not part of the NE) is
not included in this report. The connections are sorted first by NE, and then by
node, so each NE and node are displayed only once in the report, and vertically
spanning all of the rows defining each connection. This report is intended to help
during installation
The Connection Type column lists the name of the electrical cable or optical jumper
required; XFP or SFP if the row represents which type of pluggable to plug into the
port of an OT card; or FOADMINV if the row represents a cable connection to the
FOADMINV part.
The table provides the information about the A-end and B-end of a connection,
providing the type of card or part, the line, shelf, slot, and port that the cable or part
plugs into on both the A and B ends. For the case of XFP/SFPs plugging into an OT,
the line, shelf, slot and port are the same on the A and B ends, the A-end will list the
OT type and the B-end will list the XFP/SFP type.
The Attenuator column lists any attenuator information needed in between the A-end
and B-end, including the location of the attenuator. If the attenuator value is displayed
as 2 TBD, this means that the attenuator values are determined at installation time
(TBD= To Be Determined) and there are two attenuators needed--one in each direction.
Note: Attenuators that are NOT on the faceplate of either the A or B end card will
require two fibers, one to the attenuator and one from the attenuator. The attenuator
location in this case will be listed as the attenuator drawer.

site

The termination location of OSP cables. Each site can contain one or more NEs and one
or more glass-through connections.
SLA

See Figure 7-1, Software License Agreement (p. 7-3) for definition.
small form-factor pluggable module (SFP)

An optical modular, hot-pluggable transceiver (compatible with IEEE-802.3z) designed

for use with small form factor (SFF) connectors, offering high speed and physical
compactness. SFP transceivers perform at data speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second, and
possibly higher.
The SFP modules can be easily interchanged, therefore, electro-optical or fiber optic
networks can be upgraded and maintained more conveniently than has been the case with
traditional soldered-in modules. Rather than replacing an entire circuit board containing
several soldered-in modules, a single module can be removed and replaced for repair or
upgrading. This can result in a substantial cost savings, both in maintenance and in
upgrading efforts.

Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH)

A family of digital transmission rates used outside of the U.S. and Japan from 51.84
Mb/s to 40 Gb/s that allows the interconnection of transmission products around the
world.
SDH is the standard technology for synchronous data transmission on optical media. It is
the international equivalent of Synchronous Optical Network (SONET). Both SDH and
SONET technologies provide faster and less costly network interconnection than
traditional Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy (PDH) equipment.
Synchronous Optical Network (SONET)

A North-American standard developed by Telecordia and adapted by ANSI for the

optical long-distance networks.
SONET is the interface standard for synchronous optical-fiber transmission, applicable to
the physical layer of the OSI reference model. SONET has a basic bit rate of 51.840
mB/s, called OC-1, that is used to define higher rates (OC-3, OC-12, OC-48, and so on)
carried as a channel on an optical fiber.

time-division multiplexing (TDM)

A multiplexing technique whereby two or more channels are derived from a transmission
medium by dividing access to the medium into sequential intervals. Each channel has
access to the entire bandwidth of the medium during its interval. This implies that one
transmitter uses one channel to send several bit streams of information.

Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)

A protocol used with the Internet Protocol to send data in the form of message units
between computers over the Internet. While IP handles the actual delivery of the data,
TCP keeps track of the individual units of data (called packets) that a message is divided
into for efficient routing through the Internet.

Underwriters Laboratories (UL)

A U.S. non-profit privately owned and operated product safety testing and certification
organization. Develops standards and test procedures for products, materials,
components, assemblies, tools and equipment, chiefly dealing with product safety.
unidirectional path-switched ring (UPSR)

A survivable, closed loop transport architecture that protects against cable cuts and node
failures by providing duplicate, geographically diverse paths for each service. Adjacent
nodes on the ring are interconnected using a single pair of optical fibers. One fiber
transports traffic in one direction (for example, clockwise), while the second fiber
transports traffic in the opposite direction (for example, counterclockwise). In a UPSR,
the source node bridges its outgoing traffic along opposite directions around the ring (on
paths provided by SONET synchronous transport channels). In contrast to BLSR, a
UPSR:

is path-specific as opposed to line specific

does not allow extra traffic (because traffic is bridged)

requires less coordination from source to destination (because the destination network
element can make all its decisions without involving the source)

UPSR

See unidirectional path-switched ring (p. GL-31) for definition.

user datagram protocol (UDP)

A minimal, datagram-oriented, transport network protocol above the IP network layer

that does not guarantee data ordering or delivery. Because it is datagram-oriented, each
send operation by the application results in the transmission of a single IP datagram.
This contrasts with the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) which is byte stream
oriented and guarantees the delivery and ordering of the bytes sent. Because it is a byte
stream oriented, a single send operation may result in a no IP datagrams (buffering), a
single IP datagram, or multiple IP datagrams.

into individual Virtual Containers (VC) at the source transmitter and logically
represented in a Virtual Concatenation Group (VCG). VCG members are transported as
individual VCs across the SONET/SDH network and recombined at the destination VCG
receiver. While contiguous concatenation requires concatenation functionality at each
network element, virtual concatenation do not.
