In a certain factory turning out blades, there is a small chance 500 for any blade to
be defective. The blades are supplied in packets of 10. Use the poisson distribution
to calculate the approximate number of packets containing no defective, one defective,
two defective blades in a consignment of 10,000 packets (Given: e-002
09802).

(a) The marks obtained by students in a certain examination follow a normal distribution
with mean 45 and standard deviation 10. If 1000 students appeared at an
examination, calculate the number of students scoring :- ,
(i) less than 40 marks
(ii) more than 60 marks.
(b) Find the Fourier expansion of f(x) = 2x - X2 0 ~ X ~ 3 whose period is 3.6
(c) A homogeneous rod of conducting material of length I has ends kept at zero
temperature and the temperature at the centre is T and falls uniformly to zero at
the two ends.
Find the temperature u (x, t) at any time.
(a) A sample of 100 students is taken from a large population. The mean height of
the student in this sample is 160 cms. Can it be reasonable that in the population,
the means height is 165 cms and standard deviation is 10 cms ?
(b) Show that for a poison distribution the mean and standard deviation are same.

(b) Theory predicts that the proportion of beans in 4 groups A, B, C and D. should be
9:3:3:1. In an experiement amoung 1600 beans the numbers in the 4 groups were
882, 313, 287 and 118 respectively. Does the experiment support the theory ?
(c) Obtain all possible solutions of two-dimensional heat equation for steady state
conditions using method of separation of variables.
