It is with great pleasure I address

you all as the newly elected president for
the Leoistic year 2016/17 of Leo club of
University of Moratuwa. A new year has
begun. After a successful last year it will
be my duty to carry on the good work
that has been done since the beginning.
It is true that we became the Most
Outstanding Leo Club of the Multiple
District 306, but the true happiness is
with the work we do. As I said during
Leo Shehan Akmeemana my first speech as the president, To
President be happy, be the happiness of another.
Work hard, work cooperatively and
bring a smile in another, who needs it
the most.
It was an eventful last year. All the
members worked hard in completing
the 80 projects. Especially the board
of directors did a marvelous job in
organizing the projects. And also
the editorial team was impressive in
handling the newsletter.
So now it is a fresh start. We can
see a bunch of young Leos taking new
responsibilities to carry on the good
work done by their seniors. I can promise
another wonderful year with Mora Leos.
Finally I like to thank everyone who
helped me to achieve this. From a
common student to the president of the
best club, is a very long journey. So is the
list of people who helped me.
Message by the Thank you all and I invite everyone
to join in hands with us to serve those in
President need.

Leo Yasiru Nilan

Secretary
I consider this as a great honour for
me to have the opportunity to address
you through the very first newsletter of
the Leo club of University of Moratuwa
for the Leoistic year 2016/2017.Without
telling what the Leo club and Leo
movement do, I would like to pass a
message which I think would be useful
for all of you.

Nothing is impossible. This is a

famous saying and we all know it. But
do we really take it into our lives? The
answer is no. When we really want to do
something we should really try to achieve
that target. Its not always that we achieve
our target in the first couple of tries. If we
need it we should keep trying and at one
moment we will achieve it. According to
Audry Hepburn Nothing is impossible
the word itself says Its possible. So
Message by the keep dreaming, keep planning because
one day you are going to do it you are
Secretary going to achieve it.

The Great Galle

Beach Cleanup

It was a sunny day and there were no obstacles from the nature.
UoM Leos with some members of few other organizations and people
around Galle area gathered to beaches near Galle Fort and Dewata on
4th of June 2016 to enhance the beauty of nature by cleaning the beach.

Our motherland Sri Lanka is an island which has beautiful beach-
es all around. UoM Leos obviously know that they are treasures that we
must protect and preserve for the future. So we wanted vehemently to
be a part of this great work. First we cleaned the Galle Fort beach from
8.00 am to 10.30 am and then Dewata beach from 10.30 am to 12.00
pm. All the collected garbage was packed into the garbage bags for easy
transportation. Galle Municipal Council agreed to dispose the garbage
we collected accordingly. Little kids, young guys and adults were there
to give hand in this great effort. At the end everyone was so pleased to
see the beauty of the cleaned beaches.

of that, buying plants, transporting
the plants, arranging needed items,
promoting the event and all other work
was done properly on time.
The distribution of plants among
the participants, selection of suitable
places for plantation and finally planting
trees were done in a proper way by the

GREEN
Leos.
We spent about 4 hours working in
the temple with the participation of about
10 Leos, Leo prospects and university
students. It was a great pleasure for us to
see those small plants after planting and

of life by bringing natural elements and
wildlife habitats into urban settings.
Trees not only contribute to the
environment by providing oxygen,
improving quality, climate amelioration,
conserving water, preserving soil, and
supporting wildlife, but also they control
climate by moderating the effects of the
sun, rain and wind. Leaves absorb and
filter the suns radiant energy, keeping
things cool in summer.
So as the Leo Club of University of
Moratuwa we decided to organize an eco-
friendly project outside the university.
Planting Herbal and Fruit trees around
Kadawedduwa Temple in Yatiyana,
Matara was successfully held on 10th of
July from 1.00 pm onwards. This was a
really great project to save the nature.
We distributed all the
responsibilities among the club members
to make this event a success. As a result

fifkyfia Parents are the people who made

their kids grow up, pampered them,

now are in need of help as they grew
old with gray hair and painful bones.
Senehase Sathkara Although parents never let their
kids to be helpless as they grow up,
in the present most of the children
neglect their parents and let them be
helpless in elders homes where they
are only provided with just shelter and
food not the love and affection they
need.

So we, UoM Leos thought of

visiting one such place to spend the
day with the lonely elders and give
them some love and affection they
seek in the later parts of their lives. We
paid a visit to Thihagoda Elders home
on 31st of July with hearts full of love
and affection. First, all the elders were
bathed and then all their clothes as
well as their living areas were cleaned.
After the cleaning was done we were
able to give them a proper meal, and
a moment to relieve their pain and
enjoy by singing along with us. At the
end of the session, innocent smiles on
their faces depicted the success of our
effort to bring some love and affection
to their lonely lives.

As Mother Theresa once said,

giving a smile to someone who forgot
to smile is the best thing someone can
do.

Suwa Sarana - Let the groundwork of happiness be the good health!

Good health is the utmost wealth that anyone can have in life. UoM
Leos conducted an awareness program about non-communicable diseases
at Yatiyana Medical Center to spread the message on health. Apart from
conveying that message with the help of the MOH, they conducted a health
camp. Eye checkups, blood tests, breast tests, random sugar tests, thyroid
checkups were done on that occasion for villagers for free of charge. The
participants were refreshed with Kurakkan Kanda. The villagers were
addressed by the Public Health Inspector at the end of the session.

19th of August 2016 was an inspiring day for the villagers in Yatiyana.
With the help of the UoM Leos they received guidance towards the paradise
of health.

ARANA wrK

Historically, cleanliness has been considered as one of the

important factors by which a societys development can be measured.
All the religious leaders, including Lord Buddha, placed a great
emphasis on cleanliness and purity both physically and spiritually. A
temple is a place of developing the spiritual life of people. Therefore
a temple should be clean, calm, peaceful and a quiet place avoiding
unnecessary noises.

To fulfill this and to improve the happiness of members by doing

community development projects, we took another step in the series of
continuous projects, ARANA. It was a shramadana campaign held at
Kodagoda Rajamaha Viharaya, Imaduwa on 20th August. We cleaned
the temple premises, painted the buildings and helped the ongoing
construction work at the temple premises.

It was a successful event with the participation of Leos and
prospects of the club.

What you have learned

is merely handful, what you
havent learned is the size of the

world ue,s fkdfjuq
According to the above saying, we
are always learners in this world. While Api Akurata Meli Nowemu
we are learning, we should be able to
give our known knowledge to others.
Then that is the moment where we reach
towards the real pleasure. As long as we
are capable of doing good deeds using
our abilities, we have to engage in them
and then our surrounding will also be
pleased to take part in them.
We had got a wonderful
opportunity to share our knowledge with
our brothers and sisters of Malimada Sri
Sumedha Maha Vidyalaya, Matara on
27th August 2016. It is a school in a rural
area with low facilities. As a team, we went
there in the morning around 8.30am. We
conducted a Mathematics seminar for
the Grade 11 students who are going to
face the Ordinary Level Examination
this year. We gave some question papers,
for them to try with their ability first
and then guided them to do that using
proper methods by discussing the paper.
Important theories were explained time
to time related to the questions. Finally
they were able to clear their doubts with
the help of UoM Leos. We ended the
session after receiving their gratitude.
It was really a good time we had
as UoM Leos as it took our memories
back to our school days, friends and fun
we had. At the end of the session we were
able to reach the climax of satisfaction
by utilizing our knowledge and helping
those innocent little sisters and brothers.
We motivated the children to join with
us to taste the sweetness of university
life. We were able to teach them that
Education is the most powerful weapon
which one can use to change the world

As human beings we cant

live alone. Our lives are always
about being taken care of or being
a caretaker for others. We are
growing by learning nurturing,
love and compassion. Taking care
of elders may be difficult due
to their physical and emotional
problems. But elders are the ones
who deserve our honour, love
and care. 28th of August 2016
was a special day for the elders
of Aluthwala Amaraseela Elders
Home because they could feel the
love and affection of UoM Leos.

We spent the whole day with

elders and shared the happiness.
We cleaned their premises and
made it more pleasant for the
elders to live. We bathed them and
served meals to them. True smiles
in the faces of elders came up by
passing many barriers of wounds.
It was a day they were blessed from
the warm hearts of UoM Leos.

We always tend to make

our surrounding attractive no
matter where we are. Physical
environment of school buildings
fidre
and school ground is a key factor
of the overall health and safety
u
of students. School buildings
and grounds must be designed Sonduru Widu Bima
and maintained to be free of
health and safety hazards and to
promote learning. Studies have
shown that student achievement
can be affected either positively
or negatively by the school
environment.

This time we were

able to make an enchanting
environment in the Hapugala
Primary School so as to make
the childrens learning area
more attractive. And also this
was useful to enrich the love
of the students towards their
environments. Our Leos were
able to make a flower shaped
flower bed, another flower bed in
the shape of a peacock and two
large compost bins, as a lot of
decaying waste is being generated
in the school premises. The
major objective of this project
was to prepare the school garden
in an eye catching manner so
as to make the students of the
primary grades happy by seeing
their school.

Desire is said to be the starting point of achievements. Once we have a vision

and a decision for an achievement we will reach it eventually with the helping hands
of courage, dedication and unity. We, Leos of University of Moratuwa possessed
so called helping hands and we all got a unique vision through our career. We
have spent another lively year, illuminating thousands of hearts, making a smile on
thousands of faces while spreading the message of humanity. We have never failed
in believing the unwavering truth of the saying The more you give the happier you
get. We were able to spend a year full of blissful memories which last forever.

th

CEREMONY

Having completed another

successful year, we are about to dominate
the centennial dawn of the Leostic years.
On the 10th of September 2016 we took
the first step of our journey through
the challenging path of the New Year.
Installation of the new leaders who will
be the backbones of this centennial arena
was done on that special day. Chief Guest
for the 14th Installation Ceremony of the
Leo club of University of Moratuwa was
the President of the Leo Multiple District
306A2 Leo Kesari Seneviratna PMJF. The
head table was spirited with dignitaries
of Leo District 306A2.

Leo Shehan Akmeemana became

the Main Pillar by being appointed as the
President for the leostic year 2016/2017
while Leo Yasiru Nilan became the
Secretary for the dawning year. The
installation became a stylish event
remarking the emergence of another
distinctive year where UoM Leos will
treat the world with their beautiful souls

GET SOME SKIN IN THE GAME

I fail more than most people. I fail all the
time. Ive had failures in games. Ive felt the bitterness
of defeat. Ive had failures in relationships. Ive had
failures in life. I used to wonder why this always
happen to me and I used to get over with them after
a sometime worrying about myself after failing. But
now I get it. Failure is the highway to success. And
the more risks you take in the pursuit of your dreams,
the more you are going to fail. In Abraham Lincolns
letter to his sons headmaster Lincoln said Teach
him to learn to lose also to enjoy the winning.

Too many amongst us live our lives in what

I call the safe harbor of the known. Same pattern
of thinking for twenty years. Same conversations for
twenty years. Same breakfast for twenty years. Same
drive to work for twenty years. I have no judgment
on that kind of a life. If it makes you happy, well thats
a beautiful thing. But I dont know of anyone who is
living happily like that. True joy comes when you put
some skin in the game and take some chances. Yes,
you will start to experience more failures. But guess
what, success also starts to pay more visits. You have
to get experiences, no man can live twice in their
lifetime, so you have to take your chances and enjoy
your life. Go trips with friends, do travel, help the
people. Thats what I call life. While you doing them
you will fail sometimes taste the bitterness of losing
and failing but rise again like a phoenix from ashes
and light up your path to success.

Failure is just part of the process of getting

to greatness. The best companies on the planet
have failed more than the average ones. The most
successful people on the planet have failed more than
average ones. To me, the only failure is the failure to
not try and dream and dare. And I deeply feel that
the greatest risk you will ever take in your life is if
you never take a risk.

So go ahead, stretch today. Ask for the best

table in your favorite restaurant. Ask for an upgrade
into first class on your next flight (good luck). Ask
your teammate at work for more understanding. Ask
your mate at home for more love. Do it. I dare you.
And just remember, finally I have to say you cant
win the game if you dont even play.
