ABSTRACT

This experiment is conducted to determine the characteristics of laminar, transitional and

turbulent flows. Other than that, and to prove that Reynolds number is dimensional by using

this formula Re =

.The experiment started with opening the inflow valve and water was

entered the stilling tank. A small overflow spillage through the over flow tube to maintain a
constant level of water. After that ,set the type of flow by control the dye needle control valve
adjusted water .When the flows settled .Then the flow rate are measured by collecting water
at out low tube using measuring cylinder in 10 seconds. The experiment were repeated three
times for best result and accuracy .The data all recorded in the table provided .The velocity is

then calculated by doing flowrate/area. Using the formula

UL
V

the Reynolds number

is obtained. For laminar flow, the flow shown is thin and straight flow and the velocity is also
low. The range of Reynolds number is less than 2100 .Next, for transitional flow shown is the
mixture of laminar and turbulent flow. At first we can laminar flow and at then its became
turbulent and the velocity is average .The range for Reynolds number is 2100 <Re< 4000.
Lastly, for turbulent flow shown is irregular shape flows and the velocity is high .The range
for the Reynolds number is more than 4000. From the result, it can be said that the flow
pattern of the blue dye line changes when the flow rate of the water increase. The flow
pattern of the blue dye line started with a smooth and thin streamlines to the fluctuation
between laminar and turbulent flows and continues to become fully turbulent where the line
was in disordered motion. From this experiment, it is proved that the given range for the flow
pattern was correct where the Reynoldss number for laminar flow is said to be less than
2100. For transitional flow, the Reynoldss number is in between 2100 and 4000 and for the
turbulent flow; the Reynoldss number is more than 4000. Therefore, when the flow rate of
water increase, the calculated Reynoldss number also increase and at the same time, the flow
pattern of the blue dye line changes from a smooth and thin streamlines to the fluctuation
between laminar and turbulent flows and continues to becomes fully turbulent where the line
was in disordered motion.
