The following errata apply to the 2nd edition. Some of these errata would have been
corrected in the 2nd and subsequent printing of the book.
In some books, many Greek characters are missing due to misprinting by the printers.
The publisher has corrected this problem. They will be posting the corrections at

Solution 7.13

Step 1: Determine the initial stresses.

z = 1 = sat z 1 + ( sat w ) z 2 = (18 1) + (18 - 9.8)4 = 50.8 kPa

Kooc = Konc (OCR)0.5 = (1 - sincs) (OCR)0.5 =

3 = Kooc z = 1.2 50.8 = 61 kPa
1 = z + z2w = 50.8 + 4 9.8 = 90 kPa
3 = 3 + z2w = 61 + 4 9.8 = 100.2 kPa

(1 sin 24 ) (4)
0

0.5

= 1.2

Step 2: Determine the stress increases at z = 5m under the center of the rectangular foundation. Use
equation (5.85) or the computer program on the CD.
z = 71.1 kPa, x = 5.1 kPa

Neglect the effect of shear stresses (zx)

Step 3: Determine imposed shear stress for short-term loading.
Current vertical total stress = (1)T = 1 + z = 90 + 71.1 = 161.1 kPa
Current horizontal total stress = (3)T = 3 + x = 100.2 + 5.1 = 105.3 kPa
Current shear stress = u =

( 1 )T ( 3 )T 161.1 105.3
=
= 28 kPa
2
2

< 40kPa

The soil will not reach the failure state.

Factor of safety is: FS =

su

40
= 1.4
28

Step 4: Determine failure shear stress for long term loading.

For long term loading, we will assume that the excess porewater pressure dissipated, so the effective stress
= total stress.
Final effective stresses :

( 1) F = 1 + z = 50.8 + 71.1 = 121.9 kPa

( 3 ) F = 3 + x = 61 + 5.1 = 66.1 kPa

The friction angle mobilized is:

1 3
121.9 66.1
= sin 1
= 17 0

121.9 + 66.1
1 + 3

= sin 1

The critical state friction angle is 24o, which is greater than . Therefore, failure would not occur.

Factor of safety:

tan 24o
FS =
= 1.5
tan17o

The factor of safety based on peak condition is

tan 27o
FS =
= 1.7
tan17o
