CITADEL
Episode 6: The Gift
By John H. Harris
stove with double oven. Weve also installed a replicator, which can produce most items
you might need.
Just imagine, Rentoshi said, grinning at his wife. No more cooking unless you
want to.
It does have some limitations, MRowri added, and some people can taste the
difference between replicated and manually prepared foods.
Still, it sounds like a real time saver, Rina remarked.
And it saves space, as well. He then led the two through the dining area to a
short hallway. In here we have a bedroom, a bathroom, a laundry room and a room
weve configured as an artists studio for you, Mrs. Rentoshi. General, weve placed
your office in the back bedroom. Its a direct copy of your office over in the
administration building.
Excellent. He then pointed. I assume the vehicle bay is through that door.
Yes, Sir. Large enough for three family vehicles or a type 9 shuttlecraft.
Well, I doubt Ill need to park one of those here anytime soon, but its good to
know.
Let me show you the
MRowri was interrupted by the sound of an electronic chime. General
Rentoshi, the newly-installed base computers voice announced, there is a call for
you from the Command Information Center.
Ill take it in my office, the general replied. Commander, why dont you show
my wife the rest of the house while I take care of this?
Of course, General. Mrs. Rentoshi, let me show you the master bedroom
suite
As Rentoshi took a seat in the exceedingly comfortable chair, he reached forward
and activated the terminal on the desk.
This is Rentoshi, he said.
Sorry to disturb you at home, Sir, the watch officer, an Intaran Navy lieutenant,
replied, but tracking stations have detected a ship approaching the system.
Tzenkethi?
No, Sir. Its squawking an Intaran IFF code.
Whats its vector? The Krental is the next ship due back, but not for several
weeks.
Its not the Krental, General. Its showing an Intaran registry number, UIS-4,
but no name.
What does Starfleet have to say about it?
They dont seem concerned. In fact, the lieutenant added, leaning in toward the
screen at his end, they all look like the guetta that ate the kortay.
Rentoshi sat back in his chair. Weve only laid the keels for three UISdesignated ships. What the hode would a ship with that designation be heading in-system
for? He absently pinched his chin, turning the question over in his mind before
continuing. Lieutenant, is Commander Wilcox still on duty?
Hes in orbit, General. Hes conferring with the officers on the Ernst Ruska.
Very well. Ill take care of it. Rentoshi out.
The screen switched to its default setting, a split-screen of the UFP seal and the
Intaran government seal.
It took a little doing, MRowri remarked, but we managed to shoehorn in both
a sonic and water shower system.
Amazing. And you say the house is actually more energy efficient?
Yes, Maam. All of the systems are adapted from those used on starships, where
pretty much everything is at a premium.
Commander, the general said, entering the expansive bathroom, is there a
reason youre taking us on this tour personally? I just received a call about a ship
heading insystem, using an Intaran registry that hasnt yet been assigned. Yet none of the
Starfleet people seem worried.
The look on the felinoid engineers face, despite the difference in species between
them, said it all. Wed hoped to make it a surprise, General.
If the Tzenkethi, with technology equal to your own, cant sneak into the
system, Rina asked, how did you expect to sneak one of your ships in? The entire
planet is, after all, on heightened alert.
MRowri seemed to deflate in front of them, as he made a deep, warbling purr
sound. It took the two Intarans a moment to realize that was how Caitians laughed. I
told Admiral Mecum it wouldnt work, but he insisted.
Well put it in the Nice Try department, Rentoshi answered. So why is a ship
coming here, squawking an unassigned Intaran ID?
In reply, the engineer walked into the expansive closet, returning a few seconds
later with a bundle of red, blue and gold fabric.
Its time to update your Space Service uniform, General.
When Rentoshi beamed up to the Ernst Ruska, he found Prime Councilor Kodo
waiting for him. To say the look on his face was one of anger mixed with confusion
would have been an understatement.
They didnt tell you, either? Rentoshi asked, stepping down from the platform.
Not a word. These Starfleet types are keeping me just as much in the dark as
theyre apparently keeping you. By the way, hows your wife?
Shes fine. Shes conferring with Bob about where to put the Renewal Tree.
Renewal Tree? Kodo asked, but quickly realized what the general was saying.
Thats right. I keep forgetting youre Kentari.
Plenty of Nectem celebrate the Renewal Festival, you know.
Indeed. I probably should put in an appearance at Council Houses
celebrations.
He was about to say more, but stopped when the transporter room doors parted
with a gentle puff of its pneumatic system. A moment later, Yineth Nikara entered.
Captain, I hope you have an explanation for this, Kodo growled.
Your explanation is waiting nearby, Prime Councilor. If you gentlemen will
come with me, Ill conduct you to the Opera House.
You have an Opera House on board your ship, Captain? Rentoshi asked. As
large as it is, one would think there isnt enough room for such a venue.
Sorry. Thats what we call our main lounge. It doubles as the ships theater.
Interesting.
Meanwhile, MRowri was concluding the tour of the house with Rina.
As you can see, the upstairs can be converted for a number of gravity and
atmospheric conditions, should it ever be needed. Theyre rare, but there are a few
species that breathe gases other than oxygen.
Well, Im sure the base housing people will be able to take care of that, should
the need ever arise. Rina paused at the foot of the stairs, looking at the Great Room
before them. Commander, I wonder if you might help me with something.
If I can, sure.
The turning of the Intaran year is only a few weeks away, and the people of my
homeland have a festival we call Renewal. One of the symbols of Renewal is a decorated
tree. In recent years, weve used an artificial tree, but nothing beats a real kraiteni.
Huh Well that explains the decorations on the tree in front of the admin
building. I assumed it was the humans who decorated it. Theyve got a similar tradition
with one of their holidays.
Oh?
Yes. It started as a religious observance, according to what I learned back at the
Academy. The Magna Romans really play it up, though its been more or less secularized
amongst the other human groups.
It must be hard telling them all apart.
Sometimes. Weve catalogued dozens of kinds of humans, including you
Intarans. Anatomically, youre identical.
Interesting. Anyway, I wonder if we could use that transporter thing of yours to
get a tree. There was this farm near where I grew up where one could cut their own trees.
I remember playing there with my friends as a child.
Well, were not really supposed to use the shipboard transporters for personal
use, but seeing as this is to decorate the base commanders house
Ill even buy you lunch. I know you Starfleet types dont use money
Actually, we do, MRowri countered, pulling a few neatly folded pieces of what
looked like a plastic film from his pocket. Your government is paying us in this scrip.
Oh, yes. I did hear something about that on the update channel. She examined
the blue one the Caitian passed her. Its a very simple design. Nice picture of Council
House on the back, but who is this James T. Kirk?
Only the most famous starship captain in history, MRowri answered, tucking
the bill back into the pocket of his uniform pants. Like most engineers, he preferred the
multi-pocketed cargo pants to the simple style that was standard to most of the fleet.
Back in the last century, he racked up more first contacts than anyone in the fleet. In
fact, thats why the Enterprise is Starfleets flagship.
So wheres this farm youre talking about?
It was a short walk from the turbolift to the lounge they called The Opera House.
It wasnt the first time either of them had looked out on Intar from the expansive
windows of a Nottingham class ship, but what they saw out there this time was different.
There, in the light of the Intaran sun, was a starship, close enough for the two
Intarans to see that it bore both Federation and Intaran script upon it.
Interesting. Our own legends tell of such a person. In past centuries, religion
was rather pervasive amongst my people, Captain, but once we knew we werent
alone
That seems to be the pattern, Maam.
Oh, please, Captain. Call me Rina.
Only if you call me Dominic.
Very well. Anyway, in Kentari culture, Renewal is a time of new beginnings.
Outstanding debts are paid, if possible, relationships renewed, commitments remade. The
tree symbolizes life itself, and how it renews from year to year and generation to
generation. And, we give gifts to remind each other how precious the relationships were
renewing are.
That sounds more like Tet than Christmas, or perhaps the Turkish tradition.
Turkey is a country on Earth that adopted the symbols of Christmas, though not the
religious aspects. Its quite popular there.
Interesting. Captain, would you be interested in attending a Renewal party?
Id be delighted.
Good! Ill contact you with the details, once theyre all worked out.
Just then, MRowri returned, carrying a small chainsaw and wearing a standardissue cold-weather jacket. So what was it you needed to confer with me about,
Skipper?
Oh, its a request for another hospital. I wanted to discuss site planning with you
and the local leaders.
This shouldnt take me too long. Ill let you know when Im done.
Thatll be fine. Rina, it was a pleasure meeting you, and I look forward to when
I can give you the full tour.
I too, Dominic.
The travel pod gently backed into place, and the three men heard and felt the
muffled clunk of the docking latches engaging.
Were here, Yineth announced.
Thank you for bringing us over, Captain, Kodo replied, and thank you for the
exterior tour.
It was my pleasure, Prime Councilor.
He then stepped to the back of the pod and triggered the hatch release, allowing
the doors to open. Beyond, in the small lounge onto which the hatch opened, they found
a gaggle of press, both Intaran and Federation. There were also a number of people in
Starfleet uniforms.
United World of Intar, Arriving, the computer announced, just before the
youngest of the Starfleet personnel blew a long, whistling note on an unusually-shaped
pipe, alternating it with a higher note. As he did so, the other people in uniform snapped
to attention.
Not knowing Federation protocol in such a situation, Kodo addressed the only
person he did recognize.
Request permission to come aboard, Admiral Mecum.
Granted, Prime Councilor, Mecum replied, stepping forward to shake hands
with Kodo. Welcome aboard the Sentinel.
Thank you. I believe you know General Rentoshi, the commander of Gwalior
Base.
Mecum repeated the gesture with the general. Of course. Its a pleasure to
finally meet with you in person.
The pleasure is mine, Admiral.
And this is Captain Sloe, temporarily in command.
The two Intarans blinked. Forgive me, Kodo asked, but did you say Captain
Slow?
Yes, its an unfortunate pun that the universal translator perpetuates, the captain,
whose face bore an unusual mottling pattern down its sides. In Trill society, we take the
name of our symbiont when were joined. Thus, Captain Erias Sloe.
Do forgive us, Captain, Rentoshi said, shaking the Trills hand. There is a
childrens satire about a driver known as Captain Slow.
I take no offense, General Rentoshi.
Captain Sloe is here to assist in training your people to crew the Sentinel, which
is a gift to the people of Intar from the Federation.
The Federation has been nothing if not generous, Kodo said, but I think youve
exceeded your generosity this time. You never gave the Bajorans a starship.
This is true, Mecum answered, but then, unlike the Tzenkethi, the Cardassians
left Bajors shipbuilding capability intact. But we can discuss that later. Right now, I
think a tour of the ship is in order
Well, this is nice, MRowri drawled after he and Rina materialized in the small
parking lot outside the tree farm.
Not used to the snow, I take it?
Cait is a savannah planet. Im used to hot and dry.
Rina chuckled, but stopped at the voice behind them.
No, no, no! Bering, you have no clue how to choose a Renewal tree.
Kaya?
The three people inside the fence turned at Rinas word.
Mother! I thought you and Dad were in Citadel.
We are. Commander MRowri is helping me secure a tree for the house there.
Kaya looked over at the engineer and yelped.
Kaya!
Im sorry, Commander, but our farm was attacked by the Tzenkethi, and your
resemblance...
Say no more. Im not offended. If you hang on a moment, MRowri answered,
raising the chainsaw he held, we can help you with that tree.
That would be wonderful. Thank you.
Rina led the way into the enclosed area of the tree farm, paying the teenager who
was manning the small booth that provided the only easy access.
So, which one are you looking at?
This one, Bering, who was as thin as Kaya, said, indicating the tree in front of
him.
Shes right. Ive never seen a scrawnier tree in my life.
Except maybe that one Dad brought home that one time.
Well, it was rather difficult to find a proper tree on that island, but youre right.
Your father could never pick a Renewal tree.
How about this one? MRowri asked, indicating a tree that wasnt especially
large, but well-formed.
Good eye, Commander, Kaya replied. That is an excellent tree.
But wed have to trim half the branches to make it fit, Bering said, slowly
looking it over.
You would, but we wouldnt. I think its perfect. And, she continued, turning to
her daughter, if you come visit us in Citadel, you wont need one of your own.
Mother, you know what would happen
Things have changed, Kaya. Our size has been shown to be natural. The only
reason you and Bering are the way you are is due to your recessive genes.
Yes, its been all over the update channels.
Ive been telling her that for years, Rina, Bering said, looking out from behind
the tree. But you know how stubborn she is.
She gets it from her father. Will you at least think about it?
Kaya regarded her mother, looking a lot like her. Wed have to send the gifts
ahead.
That shouldnt be a problem, should it?
Heaving a sigh, Kaya smiled. Are you sure I got my stubbornness from Dad?
Lets get this tree secured, and then we can all go for lunch. Commander, if you
would do the honors?
Id be delighted. Sir, if youd take hold of the tree, Ill start cutting.
Of course, Commander, and please, call me Bering.
Bob.
Weve updated the ships systems as time has gone by, Erias Sloe explained,
guiding the two Intarans into the Sentinels engineering section, but space constraints
have limited us somewhat. Of course, intermix technology is fundamentally identical no
matter what species uses it.
Yes, though the unit on my old ship, the Yan-Chi, was a lot bulkier than this.
Remind me to show you what they had on the old NX class ships, Mecum, who
was tagging along, remarked. Theyre only one generation removed from the NamreeZaye. In fact, thats more or less the pattern were using for her new engines.
Yes, I did see a report about that. Shell top out at warp six or so, correct?
Computer simulations show warp six point three, which is quite respectable,
even today.
Impressive, Kodo said, appreciatively. What about this ship?
Shell top out at warp nine point two, but can only maintain it for about an hour.
She cruises at warp six, Sloe answered.
How soon can she be operational?
Well, Rentoshi answered, looking around, transition training shouldnt take too
long, though there is a general lack of qualified personnel. Weve got three crews
training, plus those re-upping from current deployments. Thats going to leave us short.
Captain, how long can you and your people stay?
Eight months at most. Most of us are needed at our various training bases.
Oh, you have no reason to worry, Maam. While I do prefer animal proteins a bit
on the rare side, I can eat anything a human can.
Oh, thats a relief. Is Mayena still in charge of the kitchen?
Yes, she is, the waitress answered, looking as relieved as Rina was.
Then shell be able to handle it. Were here to have dinner with my daughters
family. She looked around, and saw a suitable table in the corner. And that table there
would be perfect.
In that case, let me take you to it. Ill also inform Mayena of your presence,
Commander.
You dont have to do that, but I certainly wont stop you. I appreciate the
courtesy.
Its no problem, Sir. You are, after all, the first alien weve ever had here.
Care to know a secret? Even on Federation planets, you dont see many nonnatives outside the big cities. Im just here to help Mrs. Rentoshi pick out a Renewal
tree, and she insisted on buying me lunch.
A bit late for that, but well definitely serve you a dinner youll never forget.
Of that, I have little doubt, Miss.
As the two diners took their seats, the waitress placed menus in front of them.
Would you care for something to start you off while you wait?
I think a pitcher of tea would be nice. Bob, what do you think?
Sounds good to me.
How about a basket of rolls, or some seaweed strips?
I think well skip those until the rest arrive.
Ill be right back with your tea.
Its certainly an interesting idea, Yineth Nikara said, as he sat across from the
general in his readyroom aboard the Ernst Ruska. In fact, I may have an idea on who we
could get to host a show like that. Ive got a new assistant communications officer
coming out who studied under him.
Good. Ill see about starting things at this end after the holiday. Well probably
have the networks falling all over themselves bidding on it.
I dont doubt it. He was about to say more when the door chime rang.
Come!
The door opened to reveal Daileyr Kayn. You wanted to see me, Captain?
Actually, Im the one who wants to see you, Rentoshi replied.
The Intaran commander snapped to attention. General.
At ease, Commander. In fact, have a seat.
Thank you, Sir.
How are you finding your duties here aboard the Ernst Ruska?
Its interesting, to say the least. This ship makes the Namree-Zaye look like a tin
can. But the tech And my daughter loves it.
It is an adventure, isnt it? Anyway, have a look at this, Rentoshi continued,
indicating the large screen opposite the desk. Yineth keyed a command into the desk
terminal, and the screen changed to show the Sentinel.
Those are Intaran markings, Kayn remarked.
Thank you, Captain Obvious, Yineth quipped.
MRowri purred a laugh. Chef Itan, you would be very surprised at some of the
things I have eaten. Like I told the young lady who escorted us back here, I can easily eat
anything a human can. In fact, I rather enjoy grilled fish.
Then you are in luck, Commander. We just received a delivery from the coast,
not more than an hour ago.
Just then, a waiter arrived bearing a large teapot atop a cast iron warmer. No
tanzila? Mayena asked.
Well, with the shortages, and all, I figured youd be running low, Rena replied.
Youre not wrong about that. Ive had to raise prices quite a bit, and theres still
a run on it. You made a good choice.
Just then, a young voice called out. Avia!
Hello, Nita! Hugging the little girl, Rena introduced MRowri. This is my
granddaughter, Commander. Nita, this is Commander MRowri. He built your
grandfather and I a new house.
You have a tail? the little girl asked.
Yes, I do.
Can I touch it?
Nita! Kaya scolded. Its not polite to ask something like that.
Its perfectly fine, Maam. My niece used to love attacking my tail. Go ahead,
Nita. Just be gentle with it.
Im not sure whether I should be frightened or jealous, Bering said, walking up
behind his wife.
Neither, Bering. While my species does show affection with our tails, its much
in the same way as holding hands.
Oh, well, thats a relief. Hello, Mayena. How have you been?
Not bad, Bering. You?
The life of a farmer, yknow.
At least people arent calling you a damn Thin Preacher so often.
Yes, the updates have quelled a lot of it, though I hear there are a few die-hards
who think we can treat this what do you call it?
We just call it Cyrano Jones Disease, after the man who was first diagnosed with
it, MRowri chimed in.
Yes, thank you, Bob.
Well, you know some people. If they dont have anything to criticize, theyll
make something up.
Sad but true.
So, now that youre all here, Mayena asked, how about I start you off with
some seaweed chips and a dip tray?
That sounds great, Kaya said, placing a booster seat on one of the chairs.
Commander, you are in for a treat. Mayena makes the most wonderful dips. She makes
this one fish dip that, I have to tell you, sometimes I come in just for that.
Im sure Ill enjoy them all.
Come on, Nita. Lets get you settled, shall we.
Your tails soft, Mander.
So Ive been told.
What do you say, Nita? Kaya asked, pointedly.
Thank you.
Youre welcome, Nita.
As Kaya lifted her daughter into the seat, MRowris commbadge chirped for
attention.
Ruska to Commander MRowri.
Tapping the commbadge, MRowri replied, This is MRowri. Go ahead.
Sorry to disturb you, Commander, but is Mrs. Rentoshi with you?
Yes, she is.
If you could, Sir, pass the word that the General has been invited to dinner at
Council House, and the invitation extends to her also.
I heard, Rina said.
She heard you. Pass the word back that Ill make sure she gets back in time.
Very good, Sir.
I guess that means a light dinner, Mayena said. Let me go get started.
You understand that this package is to be delivered directly into the hands of the
Chamberlain. Nobody else.
Of course, Your Excellency.
You are being paid very well to do this, DaiMon Renn. I would hate to have to
take my business elsewhere.
Have no fear, Your Excellency. After all, the eighty-third Rule of Acquisition
states, Never cheat one customer to earn another.
Good. Thank you, Gentlemen.
Good afternoon, Your Excellency.
As the Ferengi officer left the office, Vice Councilor Nelani Yan appeared at the
door. Should I ask what that was about? she inquired.
Most definitely not. Suffice it to say that its a special project that has been
approved by the Prime Councilor.
Speaking of the Prime Councilor, there is a dinner at Council House tonight.
Your presence has been requested.
I would be most pleased to attend, Nelani, but you neednt have come to the
chancery to invite me over.
I was actually sent over to berate you, Walter, Yan said, taking a seat on the
sofa.
Berate me? For what?
For keeping us in the dark about giving us a ship. Wed have been perfectly
happy to trade or pay for it.
Three ships, actually.
Three?
Walter chuckled. Thats all I was able to get Starfleet to release, though there is
talk of transferring the OHare to Intaran control, seeing how her warp drive is pretty
much shot.
Walter, were already in a debt to the Federation that well never be able to
repay.
Nonsense! These are gifts, not obligations. Nelani, those ships have been
orbiting Qualor II, powered down and abandoned, since the end of the Dominion War.
They have plenty of life left in them, but theyre too outdated to restore to Starfleet
service. They will, however, make excellent system defense vessels.
Well, it looks like the show will have three seasons, not just one.
Show? Walter asked.
It seems General Rentoshi wants to make the selection and training process
public, in the form of a I believe you would call it a Reality Show.
One of the low points of Terran culture, Im afraid but its not a bad idea. Ill
have to talk with the general about it this evening.
Theres also a Klingon vessel holding station at the edge of the system.
What? Nobody told me anything about a Klingon ship arriving.
Apparently, theyre not here on behalf of the Klingon government. Their initial
transmission states theyre here under the flag of the House of Kang.
Walter felt his eyebrows go up. Kang, you say. Interesting.
Whats interesting?
The fact that theyre here under house flag means its a family matter. So far as I
know, there is only one Klingon in the system, Dr. Rehloryn.
Of the Ernst Ruska, yes. Ive read some of the reports she filed about improving
our healthcare system. The prevalence of AHRS makes Intar a unique case.
Ive read the same reports. But why are they holding station out at the edge of
the system?
We wanted to consult with you, first. Were not familiar with the nuances of
dealing with Klingons.
I wouldnt worry, though you might want to alert the Citadel police that they
tend to play very hard, if you get my meaning. For instance, they consider a bar fight
recreational.
Ive known some Intarans like that. Ill let Gwalior Base know. Think we
should invite the ships captain to dinner?
If you do, Id limit the meal to foods that can be eaten with the hands. Klingons
arent known for their table manners. Or rather, they are, but not in a good way.
Ill let Mr. Ayen know. Dinner will be at 19:00. By the way, did Mr. Rilaar
enjoy the poggles we sent over?
Why dont you ask him yourself? Hey, Rilaar!
The door immediately puffed open to reveal the Selay Petty Officer. Yes, Mr.
Ambassador?
Did you enjoy the poggles we sent over, Mr. Rilaar?
Very much so, Vice Councilor. Thank you.
My pleasure. Theyre something of a nuisance in some areas, so Im sure youll
have a steady supply.
Then please pass on my thanks to the land owners.
Ill do that.
In the meantime, I will advise the motor pool that well be needing the
hoverlimo this evening. Vice Councilor, should we pick you up or will you be meeting us
at Council House?
Thank you, Mr. Rilaar, but Ill be at Council House all day. I would appreciate a
ride home, though.
Ill let the driver know.
Nadaira Sosseym looked up at the knock at her open door. What she saw there
made her smile.
Nik! she said, rising from the desk. What brings you to the office?
You do, or rather an invitation for you.
Invitation?
To a Renewal dinner. General Rentoshi has invited all of the captains to his
home, and Id like to bring you along.
Hmm Renewal on a military base
Oh, dont make it sound like that, Yineth protested. You should see what the
Terrans and Magna Romans are doing. Im half expecting them to overload the fusion
plant with all the lights.
I didnt know Terrans and Magna Romans celebrated Renewal.
They dont, but it coincides with a holiday they call Christmas, and the traditions
are remarkably similar.
Interesting. I wonder what hed say about a camera crew
Always the reporter, arent you? Yineth teased.
Not always, but it is one of my passions.
The Bajoran captain laughed. Its scheduled for this Lauantai. Ill see what the
general has to say about it.
Actually, it was a joke, but if you think hed go for it
I dont think hed invite the crew to dinner, but I dont see why you couldnt put
together a package about the celebrations on the base.
What about up on the ships? Are you doing anything?
Well, I did approve a request to have a holographic tree in the Opera House, but
other than that, Ive been rather hands off. The Gratitude Festival, probably the closest
thing Bajorans have, isnt for several months.
Ill have to make sure to get you a gift. Anyway, I would love to come with
you.
Really? Youre not spending Renewal with your family?
I dont have one, really. My parents died a few years ago, and well, you know
the rest.
Yes, and Im sorry I brought it up.
Well, you go talk to the general or Commander Wilcox or whoever is in charge
of such things, and Ill go talk to scheduling. Who knows, they may send me out
immediately.
If thats the case, Ill have us all beamed up and show you the holo-tree.
You are on, Captain. She gave him a quick kiss before heading out the door.
They entered the house to find Rentoshi already decorating the tree.
An, we didnt expect you back so soon.
I just got back about a half hour ago. One of the perks of being a flag officer,
you dont have to beam to the transporter center.
There is that, MRowri remarked. So what do you think of the Sentinel?
She is a beauty, Commander. I think Commander Kayn is going to have quite a
memorable term as her captain.
I think thats an excellent choice. What do you think the Prime Councilor will
say?
Hes already signed off on the deal. He took the tour with me. Kinda will still
need to sign off on it, but I suspect thats what tonight will be for. The general then
nodded at the tree. Nice tree. Whered you find it?
Back home, in the Valley. You know, that farm just outside Injaro.
Oh, yeah. I wondered why it was sitting in the vehicle bay.
Actually, it was Commander MRowri, here, who spotted it.
Good eye, Commander. I never would have seen it. You go to the Rustic for
lunch?
Of course.
And how did you find it, Mr. MRowri?
I rather enjoyed it, General, especially the grilled fish.
Mayena even sent him home with a bag of Shinja sticks as a Renewal gift.
Rentoshi looked at the engineer, cocking an eyebrow at the Caitian.
Really? he asked. You must have made an impression on her. Its a rare event
when she gives those things away.
So I gather. I trust youve found everything about the house to your
satisfaction?
Yes, Commander. You and your men have done an exemplary job.
Then Ill be on my way, Sir. Mrs. Rentoshi, thank you for lunch.
Thank you, Bob. I couldnt have found a suitable tree without you.
The mans nose was buried in a datapad as he appeared at the door.
Hey, Nad, what happened to that
Im afraid you just missed her, Yineth said from the chair behind the desk.
Huh? He looked up, seeing the Bajoran for the first time. Youre not Nad.
Obviously. He rose and held out his hand. Yineth Nikara, captain of the Ernst
Ruska.
Adiarf Liken, the man said. Assistant News Director here at UINN.
Nice to meet you.
Uh, dont take this the wrong way, but what are you doing here?
I came to invite Nadaira to a Renewal Dinner at General Rentoshis house this
Lauantai. Shes checking with scheduling to see if she can put together a package on
how we Federation folk celebrate the season. It just happens to fall near a Terran and
Magna Roman holiday called Christmas, and many of the traditions are similar to those
of Renewal.
I see. That sounds a lot more appropriate than what I wanted to know. In fact,
when she gets back, just let her know I said to ignore scheduling and run with it.
Run with what? Nadaira Sosseym asked, entering behind the man.
Your package on this Federation holiday thing. I think people would like to see
how different people celebrate.
Okay. Adi, have you met Nik?
The man did a double-take. Wait, youre Nik?
Thats what my friends call me, the captain answered.
You didnt tell me he was an alien.
You didnt ask. In any case, scheduling is good with it. Theyre assigning Rathi
to run the camera.
Good choice. You need a car?
No need, Yineth answered, pre-empting Nadairas reply. Well beam up and
tour the ships decorations first. We arent doing it as elaborately as they are at the base,
but we have some.
Works for me, the news director said. Think you can have it ready by prime
time?
Yeah, that should be plenty of time.
Good. Ill slot it into Akamus show. Captain, do you think you could be on
hand to answer some live questions at that time?
Um I dont celebrate these holidays. My planets main celebration, the
Gratitude Festival, doesnt occur for several months.
But you are familiar with this what was it you called it?
Christmas. I know the basics, of course. Pretty much anyone who spends any
appreciable time on Earth does.
Thats really all we need.
Wouldnt someone from the embassy be more appropriate?
Theyre in Unity. Youre here.
Quit arguing, Nik, Nadaira suggested. He rarely loses.
Yineth knew when he was beaten. Very well. Unless the Tzenkethi pull
something, Ill make myself available.
Good. Ill see you this evening.
What did I just get myself into? Yineth thought a moment later.
Kodo stood at the door to the portico as the group appeared in a shower of blue
light.
Welcome to Council House! the leader of the Intaran government said, striding
toward the new arrivals. Admiral Mecum, Captain Sloe, welcome to Intar. General,
Mrs. Rentoshi, welcome back.
Thank you, Prime Councilor, Rina replied. I must say, traveling by transporter
is quite a bit quicker than even a supersonic airliner.
Yes. I think some of us are on a first name basis with the ships transporter
chiefs.
Oh, Mecum drawled, you certainly wouldnt be the first, Prime Councilor.
Speaking of travel, Rentoshi remarked, looking around, I would have expected
Ambassador Eve to be here.
Hes waiting inside with Council Leader Kinda and Vice-Councilor Yan. If
youll come with me, well join them.
Please, lead on.
Oh, that is pretty! Nadaira said as she laid her eyes on the holographic tree that
dominated the center of The Opera House, the ships main lounge.
Its a style we call Victorian, after one of the more influential heads of state in
Earths late 19th century, a bit over five hundred years ago, Yineth Nikara explained.
Her husband, Albert, brought the tradition from Germany, his homeland, and its been
popular among Terrans ever since.
And you say this is holographic? Rathi, the cameraman, asked.
Yes. Indicating the ceiling and walls around them, the captain continued, We
have holoemitters throughout the ship. Theyre certainly not as sophisticated as those on
the holodecks, but they can produce objects and characters, just not surroundings.
That would explain the fire, as well, since it wasnt here during my last visit,
Nadaira added.
Indeed. Open flames are rather discouraged aboard starships.
Would you believe shes taken up bowcasting again? the middle-aged woman
asked, idly stirring the dark liquid in the mug she held. After she lost her arm at Reden
Base, I never thought she would.
I just wish we could bring a hospital ship or two to Intar, Walter Eve remarked.
I mean, the SCE folks can put up a hospital in a matter of days, but without someone to
staff it
Doctors we have, Mr. Ambassador, Jivo Kinda told the Federation ambassador.
Ive got hospitals all over the country calling my office, asking for someone to show
them the new techniques. In fact, that what was it, meatball surgery, I believe she
called it, that your Ensign Tapper did that one time had some asking for anyone from
Starfleet to come teach, not just medics.
Good thing you nixed that, Brevik Karan said, picking up his own mug. Shes
become quite an asset to the scientific community.
Then its a good thing I assigned her here.
Heads turned toward the new voice, and Eve smiled.
Hello, Admiral! Glad you could join the party. I dont believe youve met High
Marshal Drekaan or Councilor Kinda.
No, I havent. A pleasure, High Marshal, Councilor.
Welcome to Intar, Admiral, Drekaan replied, shaking hands with the flag
officer. I take it youve met Administrator Karan?
Not in person, but weve had a couple of subspace calls. Hes been coordinating
a lot of the relief convoys weve been sending.
And the farming equipment has been especially helpful. Barring any major raids
by the Tzenkethi, we might even have a big enough tanzila harvest to ease the shortages.
Of course, once they find out, itll make the fields targets again, Kinda
remarked before taking a sip from his own cup. Looking down into it, he added, Maybe
we ought to switch to growing this coffee stuff.
Speak for yourself, Jivo, Yan said. Ill be very happy to switch back to tanzila
as soon as possible. This stuff is way too bitter to drink straight.
There is that.
We do have a spiced tea, generally called chai, that seems a bit closer to tanzila,
Mecum remarked, as he accepted his own cup of coffee from the steward. Perhaps some
of the botanists could look into growing the constituent plants here.
Im not sure cinnamon would grow very well here, the ambassador cautioned.
This planet doesnt have all that much in the way of arable land in the tropics.
True, Mr. Ambassador, but I have been keeping abreast of some experiments in
hydroponic forestry on Pacifica that might allow it, at least in small scale.
Perhaps, once we get the test farm on the moon running, it could be grown
there, Drekaan suggested. Speaking of that, I hear the defense emplacements around
the dome are finished.
Yes, Rentoshi answered, stepping up next to Mecum. Good evening, Maam.
Councilor.
Evening, An. Rina. Good to see you again.
Jolana! Youre looking well. Wheres the Presidor? I would think hed be at a
meeting like this.
Hes in the relief. He should be back shortly.
Ah. You were discussing doctors, yes?
Yes, Mrs. Rentoshi, the ambassador replied. Dr. Rehloryn, from the Ernst
Ruska, is getting rather frazzled with all of the requests shes been getting for lectures and
demonstrations. I can send a request for volunteers back to Earth, but having a Starfleet
admiral endorse it wouldnt hurt.
Oh, absolutely. Ill be happy to endorse such a request, Mecum added.
There should also be some sort of local distribution network established to get
the equipment youre providing out to the general public, Kinda mused.
Karan traded a look with the general. The Lightspeed Ten? he asked.
Most of us did turn the fame into business contacts, Rentoshi answered.
Now that is a wonderful idea! Drekaan said. Really, An, youre the only one
who stayed in the military.
Whats this? a new voice said from behind Mecum. All eyes turned to the
planets chief executive as he walked up with another man the admiral assumed was
Drekaans husband.
Councilor Kinda reminded us that were going to need some sort of commercial
distribution if were going to import more equipment, and using the companies that my
fellow Lightspeed Ten were hired by seems the obvious way to do it.
So what do you think of the idea, Captain Sloe? Kodo asked, bringing the Trill
into the conversation.
I think its an excellent idea. One of my previous hosts, Nela, was a rather
successful corporate executive.
Previous hosts? Yan asked.
Some members of my species live as a composite being. Two lifeforms, living
as one. The humanoid host, Erias, he explained, indicating himself, and the much
longer-lived symbiont, which is a sort of second brain. He indicated the area between
the liver and diaphragm. Im the ninth host for Sloe, and when we were joined, I gained
access to all of the memories and personality traits of the previous hosts.
Interesting. So who exactly am I addressing?
Both of us. So long as were joined, were essentially one person, and well be
joined for as long as the host lives.
Im not sure I could wrap my mind around such a concept if you werent
standing right here, Presidor Drekaan remarked.
We can provide some general information, if you like, Sir Presidor, Eve offered.
Ill have someone email you.
Romans call him the Son, and you, here on Intar, know him as the First Preserver. Each
one sent to teach the Makers message. Each one a personification of the Maker himself.
Indeed, I was quite honored to be assigned to Enterprise, not only because shes
the Federations flagship, but because it was an officer of a previous Federation vessel by
that name that made the connection. Theres a quote from the bridge flight recorder
engraved above the main doors of Septimus Cathedral, in which Nyota Uhura, the ships
communications officer, said, Dont you see? Its not the Sun up in the sky; its the Son
of God. And thats the common link.
Wait, the head of the Intaran legislature said, youre giving us some of your
starships? Isnt that against your Prime Directive?
Not once you achieved warp technology, and especially not since you actively
requested our help, Ambassador Eve said from his own place at the table.
Even so, Admiral Mecum added, we are still bound by certain provisions of
the Prime Directive. For example, we are forbidden to interfere in your internal affairs;
were forbidden to help anyone, even ourselves, in avoiding or subverting your laws; and
were forbidden from actively altering your culture.
Though one could argue that your very presence is doing that, Jivo Kinda
remarked from his own place at the table.
Hence my use of the word actively. Any society is irrevocably altered by First
Contact, but Starfleet must never impose its own morality upon any society.
You say Starfleet cannot impose its own morality, Charra Kodo asked. Is this
also the case for Federation civilians?
Not as a matter of law, Eve answered, but it is a cornerstone of Federation
philosophy. Most Federation civilians would find interference, especially in pre-warp
cultures, abhorrent, and all Federation ships avoid systems quarantined as pre-warp.
My worry is that we dont have enough people to crew three ships, High
Marshal Drekaan said, pulling the conversation back to the topic at hand. With the
Tzenkethi destroying so many of our exploration ships, we just dont have any
experienced crews, excepting the Namree-Zaye and Discovery, of course.
Unfortunately, most of that crew has left the military, as well, An Rentoshi
reminded his superior.
We can do basic training quite rapidly, Sloe informed the Intaran officers. Of
course, only experience will allow you to develop tactics and doctrine.
The real problem will be narrowing down the volunteers, Kinda remarked.
Theyre going to be lining up all over the planet.
Ive already floated the idea of opening the process to public scrutiny, Rentoshi
answered. Holocast it.
Yes, Yan added. What was it you call it, Walter, a reality show?
A competition show? the councilor asked. Nelani, youd have the public vote
on who gets assigned?
Not all reality shows are competitions, Councilor, Mecum injected. The
documentary format is also quite popular.
But would the minutiae of such a process keep the publics interest? the
Presidor asked. Weve followed military training before, and its a niche market, at
best.
Thats true, Rentoshi countered, but my idea is to do a hybrid of the two forms.
Ive been reading up on Earths military history, and I think we could crew the ship using
a scheme similar to that used by the United States for its submarines. Indeed, we use a
similar scheme ourselves.
That is a good idea. Multiple crews on short deployments would allow us to
develop an experienced corps from which to draw future officers and NCOs, Kinda
mused. He traded a look with Kodo before turning back to Rentoshi. Have you
contacted the networks?
Not officially, but I have asked the PR office at Gwalior to start a rumor with the
Citadel news bureaus.
Think the rest of the council will go for it? Kodo asked his colleague.
If you can get the Progressives on board, Ill bring the Conservatives.
And Ill introduce a resolution approving of the idea. I dont think many will
object, with the exception of Gachi.
Bedai Gachi would object to a resolution saying space is black, Charra quipped,
eliciting laughter from the Intarans, and even a chuckle from Eve.
Im afraid Im not familiar with him, Sloe remarked. The name wasnt in the
cultural brief.
Hows your Terran history, Captain? the ambassador asked.
Rather extensive, actually.
Ron Paul.
Understanding spread across the Trills face. Ah, so hes an extreme libertarian.
At the blank looks of the Intarans, he appended, One who believes in extreme
limitations on government, nearly to the point of no government at all.
That certainly describes Gachi. If its not in the Treaty, the government cant do
it!
Another wave of mirth spread around the table.
So when should we make the announcement? Kodo asked.
Oh, theres only one day we can do it, Kinda answered. We do it on
Renewal.
The councilors proclamation was met by complete agreement.
And welcome back to this special live edition of Evening Report. In the
Federation Eye segment, Navan Akamu began, coming back from the commercial
break, as everyone knows, Renewal is just a few days away. This year, through what
some are calling a coincidence of orbits and calendars and others a calling part of the
Makers plan, two holidays celebrated by many in the Starfleet contingent at Gwalior
Base fall on the same day, both of which are called Christmas, and commemorate the
birth of a physical manifestation of the Maker on the planets Earth and Magna Roma.
Nadaira Sosseym looks at the similarities and differences among the three
celebrations.
Okay, the floor director said, weve got three minutes! Nad? Captain? Were
ready for you.
Yineth Nikara, who had been patiently waiting just off camera, slipped into the
seat next to the host, while a sound technician clipped a tiny microphone to the front of
his uniform. Next to him, another technician was doing the same for Sosseym.
Akamu turned to Nadaira for the next question. So what did you take away from
this report, Nadaira?
One thing I did notice is that, with their replicator technology, its easy for our
Federation friends to find the perfect gift, and their hologram tech lets one have the
perfect tree with only a few commands. She turned to Yineth. If you ever get out of
Starfleet, you could make a good living just making holographic tree stands.
Youll probably have your own holodecks by then, the captain replied.
But the most striking thing was just how similar all three celebrations are,
Nadaira continued, turning back to the host. I think if someone from the Federation had
visited a century ago, theyd find it as familiar as we do today. And vice-versa.
As the theme music rose in the background, Akamu reached across the desk.
And well have to leave it there, though Im sure we could talk about this all night.
Captain Yineth Nikara, Nadaira Sosseym, I guess the thing to say is Happy Christmas.
As he shook the other mans hand, Yineth replied, And may Renewal bring you
peace and happiness.
Thank you, Captain. And well be back with Culgi Gernell right after this.
And were out! the floor director called. Thank you, Nad, Captain. Lets set
up for the satellite. Oh, and thank you for those, too, Captain. It would have taken years
for us to build and launch new ones.
No problem. Were happy to help.
It took only seconds to remove the microphones and leave the studio. The two
then slowed their pace as they headed for the lifts back up to her office.
So, the Gratitude Festival, Nadaira mused.
What about it? Yineth asked.
Ill have to find you a gift, assuming youll still be here by then.
We should. Its in He looked at his chronograph, reading the several sets of
numbers displayed. About three months. But I wont need a gift.
Whyever not?
Because the thing Im most grateful for is you.
The street outside the townhouse that was Walters official residence was quiet as
he and Rilaar climbed out of the hoverlimo. It wasnt the first time hed come home late.
Often, like now, dinner meetings at Council House had run to well after midnight, but this
particular meeting had taken the cake.
Or rather, the lidak pie, of which hed eaten three pieces.
But as they stepped through the inner doors, his complaining stomach was
forgotten.
Who would play music at this time of night? Rilaar mused as the door silently
closed behind them. It sounds like its coming from your study. Slowly drawing his
phaser, the Selay motioned Walter to stay behind him.
Hang on, Walter suddenly said, stopping Rilaar with a touch to the shoulder. I
know that song. Thats White Christmas.
Sir?
The Bing Crosby version, to be exact.
Pushing past his bodyguard, Walter strode the length of the corridor that led to the
open doors of his study. There, he found his desk chair turned away and gently rocking
in time to the music.
Excuse me
The chair turned and Walter felt his jaw drop.
Merry Christmas, Walter, Millie, his spaceflight-hating sister, said.
Bee-dee bwip-bwip!
A pause.
Bee-dee bwip-bwip!
An Rentoshi was instantly awake. Sitting up, he fumbled for the small side
tables communications panel. Hearing the sound of a call acceptance, he croaked, This
is Rentoshi.
This is gate two, General. Sorry to disturb you so early, but theres a woman
here who claims to be your daughter. She has a gentleman and a little girl with her. Her
biometrics come up with the name Kaya Hachti.
Let them in, An, the voice of his wife murmured behind him. Shell be good if
you are.
Youre right, of course, Love, the general said, pitching his voice for her alone.
Theyre cleared, he continued in a more conversational tone. Call ops and request
someone to escort them to the house. My authority.
Aye, Sir!
Must be one of those Starfleet kids, Rentoshi thought, rising from the bed. They
didnt mention how thin they were.
Time to introduce the kids to coffee, he quipped, heading for the master closet.
Ill get a pot started. Grab me some clothes while youre in there.
Yes, Love!
They only had to wait a few minutes in the small reception building before a man
Kaya recognized from various news programs appeared at the door. Like all the other
Federation people she had encountered, he wore the gray-shouldered black uniform, but
unlike MRowri and the blue-skinned gate guard who had met them, his high-collared
undershirt was red, and bore two gold circles, as well as one with a black center on the
collars right side.
Sorry to keep you waiting, the man said. He then nodded to the guard, silently
dismissing him. Im Jeff Wilcox, the base executive officer. Youre General Rentoshis
family?
Kaya Hachti, my husband, Bering, and our daughter, Nita.
A pleasure.
My father didnt need to send his second to drive us to his new house, but we do
appreciate the gesture.
Oh, think nothing of it, Maam. I needed a break, anyway. His gaze then slid
over to the multitude of suitcases and other carrying apparatus. Well, looks like the van
was the right call.
Yes, well Bering said, looking at the various bags, We needed to bring our
Renewal gifts with us.
Cant blame you there. Here, let me help you with those.
Thank you, Commander. I understand you have your own celebration
tomorrow.
Actually, Wilcox replied, gathering up several of the bags, it starts this
evening, owing to the differences in rotational periods.
So will you be at the Renewal dinner tomorrow? Kaya asked.
No. Somebody has to keep the base running, after all.
Well, then, well just have to do something today.
You dont need to do anything, Maam. Most of us dont really celebrate the
holidays.
Well, if you change your mind
There are plenty of parties, all over the city. If youll come with me, Ill take
you to the residential area.
There, An Rentoshi said, putting out the last of the filled plates. That should
be enough.
Actually, his wife said, looking over the spread, thats probably too much.
Nonsense! We should at least be welcoming.
Theres welcoming, Rina said, and then theres overboard.
We can always save the rest for later, you know.
There is that. She reached up and straightened the generals tie. Besides, you
do remember why she moved away, dont you?
Dont remind me.
He was going to say more, but was stopped by the sound of the doorbell.
Ill get it, Rina said, heading for the front door.
Computer, the general ordered, lets have some music. Something appropriate
to the season.
Please specify.
I heard something on board the Ernst Ruska a few days ago Computer, can
you identify a song from a few notes?
Affirmative.
Rentoshi did his best to sing the opening notes as he remembered them.
Match found. The Ghosts of Christmas Eve, by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Play it.
In this room where shadows live
And ghosts that failed learn time forgives
Welcome, friends, please stay awhile
Our story starts with one small child
Who spends this night in attics dark
Where dreams are stored like sleeping hearts
And so it's here that they must wait
Till someone wishes them awake
For somewhere on this night of nights
had decorated it in a mix of Intaran and Terran style, with spun glass ornaments mingled
with the multicolored ribbons that contained wishes for the new year.
There, he found his sister and her two children already awake.
Happy Christmas, Uncle Walter! seven year old Alexandra called.
Is that today? Walter asked.
The wee hours, Millie answered, handing him a cup of coffee from the service
on the table next to where she sat.
Thanks. So what convinced you to board a starship less than two months after I
left?
Not what, who. Ill give you two guesses, and the first one doesnt count.
Mom?
Millie pointed at her brother, silently telling him hed gotten it in one.
Dr. Roberta Eve, as the family matriarch, would have been intimidating enough,
but as a member of the Federation Surgeon Generals staff, one ignored her wishes at
ones peril.
She said youd need a hostess, and that if I didnt do it, wed end up at war with
the whole sector.
Leave it to mom to put a fine point on the job, Walter drawled.
She does her best, Walter.
True. Taking a sip of his coffee, he looked around. Wheres Rilaar?
Right here, Your Excellency! called Mrs. Davno, the Manager of the Residence,
as she led the Selay bodyguard and several other members of the domestic staff in.
Mrs. Davno, how many times have I asked you not to call me that?
Several, Your Excellency, but it would be highly improper not to address you
properly.
Walter shrugged at his sister, knowing hed never win the argument. So whats
with all this?
Gifts from the citys residents, Mr. Ambassador, Rilaar explained. We needed
to do a security scan, of course.
Of course. Well have to replicate some appropriate things to return the favor.
Already handled, Your Excellency. Mistress Millie, I will have the cards brought
to you for your signature, if thats acceptable.
Of course, Mrs. Davno. Well, perhaps we should open a couple of presents, this
being Christmas morning and all
Even when he was officially away from his command at Starbase 128, paperwork
had a way of finding Admiral Thomas Mecum, so it didnt surprise him when the
computer terminal in the small apartment hed been given near the base signaled for his
attention.
What did surprise him was the face that appeared when he activated it.
Hello, Thom, Frances Mecum said. Shed declined his invitation to accompany
him to Intar, preferring to remain at the starbase hospital, where she worked as a civilian
administrator.
Frannie! I didnt expect to see you today.
What? Cant I call and wish my husband a Merry Christmas?
Of course you can.
Better that than shop talk, her mother said from next to her. More drinks,
anyone?
Actually, Yineth Nikara asked, could you fill a small bowl with water, please?
Theres one more gift to open, but I couldnt bring it with me, due to its nature.
Of course, Nik, Kaya answered. In the brief time since shed met the various
Starfleet captains, shed decided she liked the Bajoran the best. Anyone else? Ikar?
The Horrusi looked up from where she was seated, playing a game of Kadis-kot
with Nida. Thank you, yes.
Mike? Bering?
Mm? her husband asked, looking up from the kal-toh rods before him. No
thanks, were good.
Dominic? Dad?
I could go for another bottle of what is it you called this, Dominic?
Dark Mild Ale, Baier answered. And I could go for another, as well.
Ill get them, Rena said. You fix up that bowl for Nik.
So whos this last present for? Nadaira Sosseym, seated on the sofa with Yineth,
asked.
You.
Me?
Mm-hmm. As far as I know, youll be the very first Intaran to have one, and it
will be the very first one on Intar.
Now youve got me curious, Rentoshi said. What is it?
In reply, Yineth tapped his commbadge. Yineth to Ruska. Transporter room two,
do you have that gift ready?
Yes, Captain. Its ready to beam down.
These coordinates, please. Energize when ready.
A moment later, a large box appeared in the glittering cascade of the transporter
beam. As the last vestiges of the beam faded, the top of the box moved.
Is it dangerous? Rentoshi asked, reacting to the movement.
Certainly not! I already cleared it with health and safety. Nad, why dont you
open the box?
As the others turned and watched, Nadaira leaned forward and gently removed the
top of the box.
Inside was an animal unlike any she had ever seen before. It had floppy ears, a
black, tan and white coat and a tail that wagged from side to side as it placed its front
paws on the edge of the box, poking its snout over the side.
Its adorable! she whispered.
What is it? Nida asked, walking over.
Its a dog. A beagle, to be precise, Mike McCune answered.
This isnt just any beagle, Yineth informed the group as he reached in and
gently picked the puppy up. This little gentleman is a direct descendant of Porthos.
Really? Its rare to find one of that particular line out here.
Am I missing something? Kaya asked, handing Yineth the bowl of water hed
requested.
Porthos belonged to Jonathan Archer, one of our most famous ship captains, and
the third President of the Federation. In fact, Porthos made a couple of first contacts
himself, albeit unintentional.
So what are you going to name him? Yineth asked as the puppy curled up in
Nadairas lap.
Well, since his ancestor was a companion to your President Archer, I think
Archer would be a fitting name. She then gently patted his head as he looked up at her.
Hello, Archer.
Like the name, he does, Ikar remarked, indicating the still wagging tail. A
happy puppy, he is. A good companion, this gift will be, yes.
I think so, too, Nadaira said. She then leaned over and kissed the Bajoran on
the cheek. Thank you, Nik.
Well, if everyone is ready, Rena remarked, dinner is served.
Nobody had to be told twice, and as An Rentoshi took his place at the head of the
table, he decided that this new house had finally become home.
To the friends and fans of STAR TREK: CITADEL
Merry Christmas and a Peaceful, Prosperous New Year
