TheOfficersTrainingAcademy,Chennai(OTA)isa
trainingestablishmentoftheIndianArmythattrainsofficers
fortheShortServiceCommission.The49weekcourseat
theOTApreparesgraduatesforallbranchesoftheArmy,
exceptfortheArmyMedicalCorps.[1]Establishedon15
January1963,theacademyisspreadover750acres
(3.0km2)about15kilometres(9.3mi)southofChennai,
India.AnewacademyhasbeensetupatGaya.[2][3]

SevenOfficersTrainingSchoolswereestablishedinIndiabetween194245tomeetthehugedemandfor
officerstoserveintheIndianandCommonwealthArmiesduringWorldWarII.However,theseschoolswere
closeddownattheendofthewar.
In1962,followingtheSinoIndianWar,Indiaidentifiedtheneedtoexpandthenumberofofficersforeffective
operations.TwoOfficersTrainingSchools(OTS)wereestablishedinPuneandMadras(nowknownas
Chennai)totrainofficersforEmergencyCommissionintotheArmy.Theprocessofestablishingtheschools
wasbeguninSeptember1962.TheChennaischoolwasinauguratedon15January1963,withBrigadierRam
SinghasitsfirstCommandant.[4]ThePuneschoolhadashortrunandwasclosedin1964.However,theschool
inChennaicontinuedtooperateandon2February1965,itobtainedthesanctiontoshiftfocustotrainofficers
fortheShortServiceRegularCommission.
TheShortServiceRegularCommissionhasevolvedintotheShortServiceCommission,andtheOTShas
continuedtotrainofficersforthesecommissions.Theschoolwasgrantedpermanentstatusin1985.On1
January1988,theschoolwasrenamedastheOfficersTrainingAcademy(OTA),onaparwiththeNDAand
IMA.
Thefirstbatchof25womentobecommissionedasofficersintotheArmyweretrainedattheOTA,with
trainingcommencingon21September1992.[5]

OTAGaya

OTAGaya,raisedinJuly2011,isthethirdprecommissiontraining(PCT)academyoftheIndianArmywitha
plannedtrainingcapacityof750cadets.
CadetsbecomepartofaprofessionallycompetentcommissionedofficercorpsoftheIndianArmy.The
academyislocatedamidanestateofapproximately870acresinahillyterrainofPaharpuratGaya.The
academyislocatedenroutefromGayatoBodhgaya,approx7kmfromGayarailwaystation.Theinternational
airportofGayaisadjacenttotheacademy.InitsvicinityisBodhgaya,aninternationaltourismdestination.
GayaCantonmentdatesbacktoWorldWarII,asoneoftheheadquartersoftheBritishArmy.
Tomarkthecommencementoftheacademy,aflaghoistingceremonywassolemnisedandtheconsecrationof
theraisingoftheacademywascarriedoutintrueseculartraditionoftheIndianArmy,withrecitalofscriptures
fromholybooksofdifferentreligions.
Theacademyhasbeenequippedwithstateofthearttrainingfacilities,atparwithotherprecommissioning
traininginstitutions.
TheinsigniaofOfficersTrainingAcademy,Gayahasatwocolourbackground,withupperhalfasgreyandthe
lowerhalfbloodred,havingtwocrossswordssuperimposedwiththeDharmchakra.Ascrollbelowbearsthe
mottooftheacademy'Shaurya,Gyan,Sankalp'indevnagri.
Thefirstbatchof149traineeofficersunderwenttrainingintheacademyduringtheperiodJuly2011toJun
2012andthefirstpassingoutparadewasconductedon8Jun2012.Thesecondbatchaftersuccessful
completionoftheirtraining(January2012December2012)passedouton8December2012.Atotalof176
cadetsfromTES26andSCO29coursespassedouton8December2012.Theacademycurrentlyhasthe
capacitytotrain350cadets.LtGenVinodVashishtisthecurrentcommandantoftheacademy,havingtaken
chargein2015.[2][3]

Notablealumni
Theacademyhasproducedmanywarheroesanddistinguishedofficers.Manyhavegoneontoworkfor
corporationsafterleavingtheIndianArmy.TheOTAAlumniAssociation[6]wasregisteredundertheSocieties
Act1860atChandigarhwithallIndiajurisdiction.
