Collaborative Unit on Digital Citizenship

Target Audience
For this collaborative unit on digital citizenship, I am collaborating with another second grade
teacher, Ms. Tapley. This collaborative unit will focus on digital law; I will be teaching her
students about plagiarism and paraphrasing.

Learner Analysis
General Characteristics: Like I mentioned before, my target audience will consist of 2nd grade
students; the ages of these students could vary from 7-9 years old. These students attend
Langston Chapel Elementary, which is a Title 1 school. Most students who attend Langston
Chapel Elementary are from families of low socioeconomic status. With that being said, a lot of
students do not have the necessary technology at home to complete online assignments;
therefore, the entire unit will take place in the school setting. The culture of the school varies
greatly; Langston Chapels student body consist of mostly African American (51%), Caucasian
(21%), and Hispanic (18%) students; within the student body, 9% of the student population is
classified as other.
Specific Entry Competencies: This unit will be presented towards the latter of the first semester
of the school year; therefore, students should contain some prior knowledge that could be
beneficial for them during this time. By October, all of the second grade students at Langston
Chapel Elementary have practiced summarizing narrative texts. Their skill of summarizing will
come in handy when discussing paraphrasing.
Learning Styles: Due to their age, my students prefer hands-on activities; they also enjoy
learning through gaming. For my online unit, I have decided to present information using visual,
auditory, and kinesthetic resources. Based on their learning style preferences as well as their age,
the best way to present this unit of instruction is in a hybrid format.

Topic and Goal of Unit

Like I mentioned before, the topic of this unit will be plagiarism and paraphrasing. The course
title for this unit will be: Say No to Plagiarism.
The second grade students at Langston Chapel Elementary are about to begin writing
informational passages. With that being said, the goal of this unit is to prepare students to find
and use digital information the correct way.
The learning objectives for this unit will be the following:
Students will explain what plagiarism is.
Students will explain what paraphrasing is.
Students will explain what citing your source means.
Students will identify appropriate and inappropriate usage of online information.
Students will explain the importance of citing a source.

why not?
Activity 1: Students will watch the BrainPop video about plagiarism. I
will ask questions about the video to check for students understanding.
We will discuss plagiarism, citing, and paraphrasing
Activity 2: Students will complete a Quizlet activity. During this
activity, students will be given scenarios; they will have to determine
whether the scenarios show appropriate usage of digital information or
inappropriate usage of information. Students will be instructed note the
names of the appropriate and inappropriate users from the Quizlet
activity; a recording sheet will be provided to them.
Students will be encouraged to take the daily assessment about the
days activities.
Activity 1: As a whole group, we will go over their answers from the
Quizlet activity from the previous day. Students will be able to
demonstrate their understanding by using the cards that will be made by
me; the cards will have happy and sad faces. When reviewing the
situations, students will be able to display the appropriate face.
Happy- appropriate usage
Sad- inappropriate usage
Hook: I will create and share a comic strip creation that basically
portrays the following message summarizing=paraphrasing; students

paraphrasing means.
