ELA ADEPT

Domain/Curricular Structure:
ELA reading strategies and phonics
Goal/Concepts to be explored:
Students will understand there are various strategies one can use to help them understand a text
(specifically chunking sounds to make a bigger word). Students will write words they learn
through using the chunking strategy in small reading groups.
Objectives/Indicators:
3.3 Read a two-syllable word by breaking the word into syllables
3.1 Demonstrate the sound correspondences for common consonant blends and digraphs.
2.4 Segment spoken single-syllable words into their complete sequence of individual sounds
2.3 Isolate and pronounce initial, medial, and final sounds in spoken single-syllable words
2.2 Orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds, including consonant blends in
spoken words.
Content/Rationale:
Students have successfully used previous reading strategies to decode words they did not know
on sight. The students have also been previously introduced to the material and strategy of
chunky monkey but this lesson would allow for the students to apply the strategy to a real-life
situation. Students also have been successful in understanding how to sound out words
phonetically through daily phonics lessons.
Professional Resources:
Chunky Monkey Reading Strategies
Materials:
Smartboard
Chunky Monkey Worksheets
Good Fit books for each student (22 books)
Pencils
clipboards or slates (to write on)
Procedures:
Students will sit on the carpet and take a few deep breaths after a brain break to prepare
for the lesson.

The teacher will start with a phonics blending activity where the teacher gives the
students the sound of each letter in a word and has the students put them together to form
the word.
Students will engage in whole group learning regarding s-blends on the smartboard using
pictures as clues.
Students will review the chunky monkey song and sing along.
Teacher will remind students why and how you can use chunky monkey as a reading
strategy
find a chunk inside the word that you already know and sound out the rest of the
letters
Teacher will then introduce the activity by telling students that they will read a book that
is a good fit and find words in the book that they can use the strategy chunky
monkey to find out what the word is.
Teacher will show the students the worksheet they will use to write down the words they
discover on the SmartBoard and model how to fill it out.
Teacher will break the students up into groups based on their reading level and pass out
books for each group to read.
Low level readers will be paired with a teacher for assisted reading.
One teacher will work with a group of 10 students with one book, the other teacher will
monitor two groups of 5 or 6 students and assist them with reading another text.
This allows for each group to be on a reading level appropriate for the individuals.
Students will have approximately 15-20 minutes to read through the text, find and write
words they did not know but learned through chunking or could chunk to sound out
phonetically.
Teacher will monitor classroom and assist students as needed.
Students will be called back to the carpet by the group they were in.
Teacher will ask students to share examples of words they chunked through simultaneous
response and a few students numbers will be pulled (from number sticks) to share
examples as well.
Teacher will collect worksheets and books by calling each learning club.
Brain break will be used to transition to related arts.
Differentiated Teaching Strategies:
Students will be involved in whole group and small group instruction to meet the needs of
various learners. Books will be determined based on students DRA levels and students will be
grouped homogeneously with other students on a similar reading level. Teacher will also assist
students in need and urge students on higher levels to find chunks in more words even if they
recognize most of the words in the text.

Assessment:
Students will be informally assessed based on their ability to find, write and determine the
chunks of words in the text. Students will have a worksheet to complete where they will list the
words they found. Worksheet is attached below. Students will also be informally assessed on
their ability to explain how to use the chunking strategy.
