DAIS - Third Grade - Trimester 2 Overview

Language Arts

Reading-Nonfiction

Choosing just-right books.

Tracking books read in reading logs.

Taking notes using a variety of techniques (boxes and bullets, lists, webs, timelines, etc).

Becoming experts on topics and teaching them to our classmates.

Summarizing text and stating the main idea and key details that support it.

By the end of trimester 2, students should be able to read at or above DRA level 34.

Reading-Poetry

Read a variety of poetry and prose to gain appreciation of the genre.

Compare and contrast elements of poetry and dramas.

Read poetry orally using appropriate expression.

Writing-Informational

Sentence Fluency (6+1) correctly constructed sentences that begin in different ways and
have varied length.

Word Choice (6+1) use precise, academic language to explain about a topic.

Writing-Poetry

Word Choice (6 + 1) specific words and verbs that add energy and help the reader paint a
picture.

Word Study

Individualized spelling and vocabulary


instruction.

Parts of speech

Synonyms/antonyms

Assessment through weekly tests.

Handwriting

Transitioning from print to cursive.

Lowercase and uppercase letters.

Speaking

Participate in one-on-one, small and


whole group discussions.

Science

In Science we will be conducting investigations


and engaging in Engineering Design Projects in:

Force and Motion (continued)

Electrical and Magnetic Forces

Ask questions to determine cause and effect


relationships of electric or magnetic
interactions between two objects not in
contact with each other.

Define a simple design problem that can be


solved by applying scientific ideas about
magnets.

Define a simple design problem reflecting a


need or a want that includes specified
criteria for success and constraints on
materials, time, or cost.

Traits

Analyze and interpret data to provide


evidence that plants and animals have traits
inherited from parents and that variation of
these traits exists in a group of similar
organisms.

Use evidence to support the explanation


that traits can be influenced by the
environment.

Math

Summary of Year

Third Grade mathematics is about (1) developing


understanding of multiplication and division and
strategies for multiplication and division within
100; (2) developing understanding of fractions,
especially unit fractions (fractions with
numerator 1); (3) developing understanding of
the structure of rectangular arrays and of
area; and (4) describing and analyzing twodimensional shapes.

Science Fair.
