PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
Keep traveling block clean.
Caps screws, nuts and pinned connections should be checked occasionally for looseness and wear.
Remove any rust and weather protect.
Keep bearings properly and adequately lubricated.
Proper grounding procedures should be taken if welding on block sideplates to avoid arcing of bearings.
Do not weld on clevis.

Check clevis pin for wear and cracks.

Check clevis for excessive wear and cracks at pin eye and saddle area.

Check lifting eye in top of cap for excessive wear and cracks.
Check sheave grooves for excessive wear (API RPSB), cracks and sheave
wobble.
Check shaft ends for cracks and deformation.
Check block housing and clevis junction for wear and cracks (especially in
the weld attaching clevis hangers to side plates and pin eye area of clevis
hangers).

*Refer to API RPBB for recommended inspection of traveling block assemblies.


EXAMPLE: Section 2 Para 2.1.3 Frequency of Inspection Critical Load Inspection. Critical loads may be
experienced; for example, severe loads, impact loads such as jarring, pulling on stuck pipe, and/or
operating at low temperatures. If in the judgment of the supervisor a critical load has occurred, or may
occur, an on-the-job shutdown inspection equivalent to the periodic field inspection should be done. If
critical loads are anticipated, the inspection should be conducted prior to and after the occurrence of
such loading. If critical loads are unexpectantly encountered, inspection should be conducted
immediately after such an occurrence.
