Program or software
o Consists of a series of related instructions, organized for a common
purpose that tells the computer what tasks to perform and how to
perform them .
Application or app
o Sometimes called application software
o Consists of programs designed to make users more productive and/or
assist them with personal tasks
Operating system
o Is a set of programs that coordinates all the activities among computer
or mobile device hardware.
o Tools or utilities
Enable you to perform maintenance-type tasks usually related to
managing devices, media, and programs used by computers and
mobile devices.
System software
o Operating system and other tools are collectively known as system
software because they consist of the programs that control or maintain
the operations of the computer and its devices.

o Retail software
Is a mass-produced, copyrighted software that meets the
needs of a wide variety of users, not just a single user or
company.
o Custom software
Performs functions specific to a business or industry.
o Web app
Is an application stored on a web server that you access through
a browser.

o Is a tool that allows users to display, copy, and print the contents of a
graphics file, such as a photo.
Uninstaller
o Is a tool that removes a program, as well as any associated entries tin
the system files
Disk cleanup
o Tool searches for and removes unnecessary files.
o May include downloaded program files, temporary internet files,
deleted files, and unused program files/
Disk defragmenter
o Is a tool that reorganizes the files and unused space on a computers
hard disk so that the operating system access data more quickly and
programs run faster.
Defragmenting
o Reorganizing the disk so that the files are stored in contiguous sectors,
solves this problem.
Screen saver
o Is a tool that causes a display devices screen to show a moving image
or blank screen if no keyboard or mouse activity occurs for a specified
time.
File compression tool
o Shrinks the size of a file(s).
PC Maintenance tool
o Is a program that identifies and fixes operating system problems.
o Detects and repairs disk problems, and includes the capability of
improving a computers performance.
Backup tool
o Allows users to copy, or backup, selected files or the contents of an
entire storage medium to another storage location, such as another
hard disk, optical disc, USB flash drive, or cloud storage.
Restore tool
o Reverses the process and returns backed up files to their original form.
o Work with a restore tool.
