Resident blown away by kindness of strangers

Medfords online community steps up to support neighbor Jennifer Corallo after upsetting incident
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
Medford resident Jennifer
Corallo has lived in town for 13
years and hasnt had any negative
experiences until recently, when
she received an angry note
posted on her front door. Taking to Facebook, she shared
the note and was greeted
with a plethora of positivity
from her community.
Monday, Oct. 31 was just
another Halloween for Corallo. She left her house to walk
her dogs around 5:30 p.m.
with the yard lights on, but
made sure to turn off her
porch and back lights. Upon
returning from the walk, she
soon after went to bed.
She woke up the next morning,
on her 51st birthday, and was
preparing to leave for work when
she noticed a piece of paper hanging from her front door. She first
thought it looked like a foreclosure notice, but quickly realized
it was an angry note written in
magic marker and hung with surgical tape. It read, Thanks for
not participating in trick or treating. Yet leaving your lights on.
Youre an [expletive]. Nice Job!
Feeling sad and alone, and
knowing someone nearby was so
upset with her, she took to Facebook for support and posted a pic-

ture of the note on the Medford

08055 group page. What happened next came as a shock, as
she was immediately flooded with
positive comments and encouragement.
She came home later to find a

beautiful bouquet of flowers. Her
initial thought was her husband
sent them, since he was out of
town for her birthday. However,
when she opened the card that
was attached, she found a sincere
note written from local people
who saw her Facebook post and
wanted to cheer her up.
I got so caught up with the
flowers that I forgot to check the
mail. I go out to get it before I turn
in for the night and find a gift bag
with a candle holder that has my
name and a candle, a beautiful
hand-written card and another
card with a Starbucks gift card inside, Corallo said.
She added there had also been

many people private messaging

her on Facebook, including one
Mary Kay consultant who said
she wanted to give Corallo a pampering session and a free gift.
I am blown away by this community. I never imagined how so
many strangers could make
my birthday one of the best
birthdays I've ever had. I am
touched, Corallo said.
She explained how it
speaks volumes how people
can simply reach out and
make someone elses day better. Although she didnt resort to posting online out
of sympathy, but rather
shock, the community
helped her to feel less
alone on her first birthday
as an empty-nester in
years and while her
husband was away.
She said the strangers
who reached out to her
have made her
feel
more
connected with
the town
in
every
way.
I am so
thankful. I have
no words to express my gratitude! I truly never
expected such a re-

sponse. I am overwhelmed and so

very grateful for all the love and
happiness you have given me on
my special day. I wish all of you a
beautiful, happy, healthy
year, and please

N.J. got the vote right!

We overwhelmingly said no to North Jersey casinos

n last weeks controversial General Election, one thing is certain:

New Jersey voters got it right
when they voted no on the ballot
question that would have allowed for
expanded gambling options in North
Jersey.
The referendum question asked voters whether they would approve of
amending the state constitution to
allow two casinos to be built at least 72
miles north of Atlantic City. Not only
did voters say no to that, they did so
at a historic rate.
As of last Wednesday morning, the
ballot question was voted down by
more than 1.5 million votes, according
to Associated Press projections. Thats
the largest margin of defeat for any
referendum in New Jerseys history.
The previous holder of that title was a

question that sought approval to build

a professional baseball stadium at the
Meadowlands complex; that vote
failed by only 500,000 votes.
The majority of the electorate cast
its votes along the line of what we
have been saying for awhile now: New
Jersey doesnt need more gambling; it
needs a refining and retuning of what
it already has in Atlantic City.
We dont need to look at other locations to place the same type of gambling and casino resorts. We need to
turn around the one location where it

already exists.
Atlantic City can get back to the successful resort town it once was. Yes, it
will take hard work, dedication and
new, creative views. But it can be done.
Legalized sports betting could help
overnight, but thats a discussion for
another day.
In the meantime, Atlantic City officials need to get creative to attract
more visitors to the Jersey Shore
town, and build it up as a destination
for more than just gambling. The city
has focused on this for the last few
years, but it needs to do even more.
We applaud New Jersey voters who
said no to more of the same. This
needs to not be a North Jersey versus
South Jersey issue. It needs to be an
issue that our entire state tackles head
on, for the good of our state economy.

Medfords Antuzzi recognized as Eagle Scout

By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun

Special to The Sun

Shawnee High School senior Vincent Antuzzi stands at a campsite. Antuzzi completed a project to become an Eagle
Scout.

A senior at Shawnee High School, Vincent Antuzzi, 18, started his path to becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest honor in
rank of the Boy Scouts of America, at age
16 upon listening to his grandfather mention his regret of not having done more
when he was a Scout. After completing his
Eagle Scout project on Sunday, March 22,
Antuzzi was recognized with a proclamation from the Medford Township Council at
its meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
I felt honored that the township presented me with the proclamation. My grandfather was there and it felt good, Antuzzi
said. Beth Portocalis, the assistant to the
township manager and council, emailed
my mother that the township wanted to
give the proclamation to me, and that she

wanted to make sure we would be able to attend.

Antuzzis project involved reconstructing the back steps and back door way, and
also repainting the railing on the handicapped ramp, at the senior citizens center
at Cranberry Hall. Ultimately, he was able
to enhance access to the center by designating, preparing, constructing and installing
a new set of back steps.
A member of Boy Scout Troop 20, Antuzzi also reset and painted the rear door to
the building and repainted the wrought
iron railing on the handicapped ramp leading to the main entrance to Cranberry Hall.
To finish this project, he enlisted the assistance of 40 volunteers over one weekend,
and directed them in completing a variety
of tasks.
We put in a lot of time and elbow grease

Daylight Saving Time is over

and darkness falls earlier every
day. So, it is a good time of year to
settle down for the longer
evenings with a good book.
In good timing, the new Reading Raffle baskets have arrived.
The childrens basket is full of
fun from The Secret Life of
Pets. There is a book, figurines,
a backpack and even some snacks
to help pass the reading and playing time. The adult basket will
help people prepare for the busy
holiday season with books for the
cook in them and ideas to soothe
the soul. Additionally, there is a
$25 gift certificate to Taunton
Jewelers toward the purchase of
a pretty holiday bauble.
Paws to Read will also be at the

library twice in the coming days.

Children can enrich their reading
skills with therapy dogs Brooke
or Ocho on Friday, Nov. 18 at 3:30
p.m. or on Monday, Nov. 28 at 4
p.m. Please contact the library to
register for a time.
Family Movie Night is sure to
be popular this month. On Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m., the library
will be showing Finding Dory,
the story of the lovable but forgetful blue tang fish who is searching for her long, lost family. If
you missed it in the theater, this
is a wonderful opportunity to see
it with the family. Feel free to
bring snacks and a blanket.
There are other wonderful
adult activities coming up including a Recipe Swap on Thursday,
Nov. 17 at 10 a.m. Bring holiday
recipes to the Pinelands Library
and perhaps find a new family fa-

vorite. Then, on Monday, Nov. 21

at 6:30 p.m., learn how to make a
holiday wreath for Thanksgiving
or to last the whole holiday season. All materials will be provided.
Another exciting event, Destress with Coloring for Adults,
will be offered on Monday, Nov. 28
at 6 p.m. After surviving Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and college football, coloring
is a good way to relax before the
next round of business. The library will supply coloring sheets
and pencils. Participants can also
bring additional materials.
Please note the library will be
closed both Thanksgiving Day
and Black Friday to allow our
staff to celebrate with their families.
Until next time, keep turning
those pages! Or logging in!

Medford resident awarded Eagle Scout

MEDFORD
Continued from page 6
during this project, and Vincent
did a great job leading. Hes usually a quiet kid, so it was fun to
watch him be very clear, concise
and direct when leading his fellow Scouts, Scoutmaster Todd
Devlin said. Hes been in the
troop for six or seven years as a
Scout, but he didnt start to
achieve his ranks until late in his
career. It has been very impressive to watch him complete
an incredible amount of requirements in such a short period of
time.
Although he only had two
years to fulfill all of the requirements of becoming an Eagle
Scout, Antuzzi was determined to
stay focused and complete each
step on time, without a missed
deadline. After earning the necessary ranks, he needed a project
and sought help from an elder
Scout.
Our Eagle Scout coordinator,
Lee Bealuk, speaks with Medford
Township in regard to projects
that may be available. There were
a couple of projects he discussed
with me, and I chose Cranberry
Hall, Antuzzi said. It felt good to
do a project that I know will be
used by other people within the
community.
He recalls getting to take on the
role of directing as being his favorite part because he was able to

make sure his volunteers had

something to do depending upon
their skill level. He also expressed
his appreciation for all of the volunteers who helped him complete
his project, and that he couldn't
have completed this without
them.
As a result of Vincents project, he better understands the
value of community involvement
and civic duty, Mayor Jeffrey
Beenstock said during the proclamation. Vincents leadership
skills are an asset to the Boy
Scouts of America Troop 20, his
community, family and friends.
The proclamation read that the
township of Medford recognized
Antuzzis high standards and
hard work in attaining the rank
of Eagle Scout. It also encouraged

the support and participation of

fellow troop members, friends,
neighbors, colleagues and fellow
citizens in other beneficial community service as part of associated Scouting programs throughout the year.
Antuzzi said he also recommends his peers take on similar
projects to keep the community a
clean and safe place. He believes
it is important to give back and to
make sure areas such as Cranberry Hall remain accessible to the
public.
Antuzzi plans to go to college
and get a degree in business. He
believes having been a Scout will
help him attain these goals because it taught him leadership, a
quality he believes is needed to
accomplish great things.

Sheriff's department to
offer security surveys
Sheriff Jean Stanfield has announced her department is accepting applications to provide
seniors and individuals with disabilities free home security surveys and modifications.
Our technicians provide a topto-bottom survey of the residence
and, where necessary, can install
a number of security items at no
charge to the resident, Stanfield
said.
These security items include:
door and window locks, peep
holes, and smoke and carbon
monoxide detectors.
Other free safety items that
may be installed include reflective house numbers, lamp timers,
power failure lights and medinfo packets that provide emergency responders with important
medical information about the
residents.

This program also gives us an

opportunity to make seniors
aware of the latest frauds and
scams, Stanfield said. This is a
totally free program for seniors
and really one that every older
resident should take advantage
of.
Interested residents should call
(609) 265-5796 to register. To qualify, at least one person in the
household must be 60 years of
age or older.
This program has been in operation for more than 25 years
and typically serves 300 homeowners a year, Stanfield said. In
addition to providing home security checks, our crime prevention
specialists are available to give
home security workshops and
presentations to clubs, churches,
and civic and community
groups.

'Recycle Coach' app
Mobile application to help residents
stay up to date on recycling schedule
Burlington County Freeholder
Mary Ann OBrien announced
that the Burlington County Freeholder Board has launched Recycle Coach, an innovative mobile
app designed to allow residents to
stay up to date on their municipalitys recycling schedule.
Recycling is critical for our
environment and helps to conserve resources for future generations, OBrien said. Through
this app, we can increase recycling rates and divert even more
waste from landfills and, by doing
so, create economic benefit, realize energy savings and reduce
carbon emissions.
OBrien said every item the

Sheriff's officers
to wear body cameras
Burlington County Sheriff
Jean Stanfield has announced
the implementation of body
worn cameras for her officers at
the Burlington County Sheriff s
Department. The department
was set to begin phasing in use
of the body worn cameras Oct.
31.
Body worn camera footage is
similar to footage from a cell
phone camera. The body worn
cameras will be mounted to an
officers uniform at the chest,
shoulder or waist area, Stanfield said. The cameras will
point away from the officer and
will capture images in the cameras field of vision. Residents
who interact with officers will
now be recorded on body camera
footage.
According to the department,
the use of body worn video cam-

era technology will improve

public safety, enhance officer
safety, assist with prosecution
and case resolution, and further
promote professionalism, integrity and transparency. This
is just one of the ways in which
my department is enhancing
trust and ensuring transparency
and accountability in law enforcement operations, Stanfield
said.
The video will automatically
upload to a secured server where
it will be saved and accessed for
review. End-users cannot tamper
with video files stored on the
server or on the body worn camera itself. The cameras record a
continuous 30-second loop, so
when an officer activates the device while interacting with the
public, images of what occurred
will be available.
