Galvanised steel frequently manufactured with wavy corrugations to resist latera

l flexing and fitted with exposed fasteners. Widely used for low cost and durabi
lity. Sheds are normally roofed with this material. Known as Gal iron or Corro,
it was the most extensively used roofing material of 20th century Australia, now
replaced in popularity by steel roofing coated with an alloy of zinc and alumin
ium, claimed to have up to four times the life of galvanized steel

The construction of a roof is determined by its method of support and how the un
derneath space is bridged and whether or not the roof is pitched. The pitch is t
he angle at which the roof rises from its lowest to highest point. Most domestic
architecture, except in very dry regions, has roofs that are sloped, or pitched
. The pitch is partly dependent upon stylistic factors, but has more to do with
practicalities. Some types of roofing, for example thatch, require a steep pitch
in order to be waterproof and durable.Other types of roofing, for example panti
les, are unstable on a steeply pitched roof but provide excellent weather protec
tion at a relatively low angle. In regions where there is little rain, an almost
flat roof with a slight run-off provides adequate protection against an occasio
nal downpour.

Performance :A number of European Countries have very active associations promot
ing green roofs, including Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy, Austria
, Hungary, Sweden, the UK and Greece. The City of Linz in Austria has been paying
developers to install green roofs since 1983 and in Switzerland it has been a f
ederal law since the late 1990s. In the UK their up-take has been slow but a num
ber of cities have developed policies to encourage their use, notably in London
and Sheffield.
Quality Several studies are done in Germany since the 1970s. Berlin is one of th
e most important Center of green roof research in Germany. Since the last 10 yea
rs many more researches are started. Now as an example about ten green roof rese
arch Center exists in the USA. In about 40 countries activities exists. As one e
xample; in a recent study on the impacts of green infrastructure and in particul
ar green roofs in the Greater Manchester area, researchers found that adding gre
en roofs will help keep temperatures down, particularly in urban areas: adding gr
een roofs to all buildings can have a dramatic effect on maximum surface tempera
tures, keeping temperatures below the 1961-1990 current form case for all time p
eriods and emissions scenarios. Roof greening makes the biggest difference where t
he building proportion is high and the evaporative fraction is low. Thus, the la
rgest difference was made in the town centers.
