Lesson
Summary:

Strand: Engagement and Persistence

Topic: Persistence
Standard Statement: Carry out tasks, activities, projects or experiences from beginning

The purpose of this lesson is to engage my students in the lesson and have them
work on carrying out tasks, activities, projects or experiences from beginning to
end. This lesson entails the students going to the Smartboard and looking at each
letter of the ABCs (knowing what the ABCs are) and practice writing out what
picture goes with each letter. This will allow the students to learn to identify the
alphabet, identify different pictures, and learn to write (fine motor skills).
NOTE: If any of my students do need help with writing more challenging words I will
be there to guide them and assist them in any I can, without spelling it out for
them.

Estimated
Duration:

I plan on dividing the lesson plan into five 40-minute class periods (Monday-Friday).
Before each day I will take 10 minutes (of the 40 minutes) to explain the new
theme we will be doing for the alphabet. The total estimated time will be 200
minutes.

Preparatio
n of
materials
and
environme
nt

What preparation is needed? In preparation for this lesson plan we will work on singing the
ABCs and identifying different themes for each letter.
What materials will be used? Smartboard and smartboard pen for writing on the
smartboard.
How will the learning environment be set up? The tables will be pushed aside to allow
students to sit on the floor in front of the Smartboard to have a more engaging
environment.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1: Theme will be animals.
First 10 minutes: Introductory of the activity- I will be explaining the basic outline for this lesson
plan to my students. I will also be explaining the different themes for the alphabet to the class.
30 minutes: I will have the Smartboard ready for the students to come up and begin the lesson.
The students will come up and identify which letter of the alphabet they are looking at and then
identify what picture goes with each letter.
Day 2: Theme will be food.
First 10 minutes: Introductory of the activity- On day two there will be a new theme for the
alphabet and I will be explaining what my students need to be looking for when they see the new
pictures next to the letters.
30 minutes: The students will get in front of the Smartboard and get ready to start the lesson.
The students will go up the Smartboard and identify the different theme that goes with each
letter of the alphabet. The students will then write out the word that goes with each letter.
Day 3: Theme will be superheroes
First 10 minutes: Introductory of the activity- On day three there will be a new theme for the
alphabet. I will explain that there are going to be superhero pictures for each letter of the
alphabet and that when they identify the letter and the picture they can write out who the
superhero is.
30 minutes: The students will again go up to the Smartboard and identify the letter, picture, and
write it on the line provided on the screen. The students will identify the superhero and write out
their name on the Smartboard.
Day 4: Theme will be names
First 10 minutes: Introductory of the activity- On day four it will be an exciting day because I will
explain that the students will be writing names out that correspond with each letter. If the
student has a name starting with that letter their pictures will be up on the Smartboard and can
practice writing their names, along with their classmates names.
30 minutes: The students will go to the Smartboard and identify the letter and the picture of
themselves, or their classmate. If there is a letter that does not have a picture by it, they will
need to try and come up with a name that might start with that letter.
Day 5: Overall assessment of the lesson plan
First 10 minutes: Introductory of the activity- the last and final day of the lesson plan will be a
little different for the students. I will assume the children will know what we are doing when we
get together and have a little surprise for them.
30 minutes: The students will still come up to the Smartboard just like the four previous days but
today will be different. I will have the board set up differently than before because today is going

to be a test for the students. The students will need to prove to me that they can effectively say
the ABCs and write them while they say them. Then the students will need to tell me their
favorite theme for the alphabet and one picture that corresponded with a letter and write it on
the Smartboard.
After the five days of this lesson I would love to have my students know and write the ABCs and
can identify a word that will start with each letter. This is hopefully going to be a fun and
engaging way for my students to practice pronouncing their words (phonics) and help work on
their fine motor skills.

Extension
http://www.themeasuredmom.com/learning/
This link will take the children to a website with explanations on how to start teaching/ learning
the ABCs (a good thing to do with parents). It also has different tabs to go to handwriting if they
need practice with that as well. There are various activities for the students to do for any
extensions they might need for the lesson. The can benefit from this website because children
learn best with play and fun activities so it is a perfect resource tool for the students.
Differentiated Instructional Support: Describe how instruction can be differentiated
(changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated students: This lesson could easily
be changed or altered to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated students. Instead of having a
picture for each letter in the alphabet, these students could come up with their own. They could
identify the letter and instead of having a little extra help the gifted or accelerated students will
not have a picture to look at, they will simply write down a word that starts with that letter.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling
with the material: If one or more students are struggling I would spend a little more one on one
time with those students to help them and/or send a link to a website to their parents to help
them work on their ABCs, writing, etc.
