CHAPTER I
Introduction
1.1

Background of the Study

The study will focus on Mapua Institute of Technologys improvement on

classroom facilities and environment. Classrooms are the youths second room for
learning. Classrooms are where students learn and gain more knowledge to what they
want to be in the future. This is a place where they freely imagine and express things
through the learnings they get from a class discussion. According to Ryan, wall arts,
chairs and table arrangements, energy of the classroom, and sounds within the
classroom has a big effect on a students learning. (Hannah, 2013)
Some of the classroom environment in Mapua Institute of Technology lacks a
conducive learning environment. Most classrooms have facilities that are not working
properly like the air conditioner, projectors and the ceiling fans. Most windows lack
cover from too much sunlight that causes students to feel lazy to focus on the
discussion, students cant stay sitting on chairs for a long period of time because of the
hard structure. Lights inside the classroom sometimes are too dim which causes
students to feel sleepy in the evening class. Other classroom in the south building have
too much big windows and too much cold temperature. Students studying with that kind
of classroom lose focus on the class discussion because they can see people and the
events happening outside. Cold classrooms make students feel cozy that affects their
participation in class and do things that are not related to the class discussion.

According to a solution essay from Herman Miller, Classroom design influences
levels of interaction and engagement. Engagement and active learning improve
retention. (Rethinking the Classroom, n.d.) Classrooms facilities, cleanliness and
orderliness, noisy environment, lighting, design, and air temperature should be
considered in order to attain a conducive environment for the students learning and
education.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

An effective lesson plan is not only the key to get a students attention to focus on
the class discussion. The conduciveness of the learning environment is also a big factor

to consider for the learning of the students. The physical look of a classroom is
important to a students learning. Classrooms should have a good energy to affect
students perspective on learning in the class. According to behavior advisors article the
age and number of the students should be considered so that the design and the
measurement of the room would be suitable for the students who will use it.
Furthermore, activities that will be conducted inside the room should be considered on
the designing process. (Environmental Engineering, n.d.)
College students are like children who gets excited to go to school whenever
they see and discover something they like or had fun in class. In order to get their
attention, their learning environment should also be clean and creative to give
motivation and inspiration. According to Julianne, a student of University of Notre Dame,
young adults tend to purposely lose interest on exerting effort when studying. Most
students especially those who are in college usually lose interest in studying because
they find coming to school tiring and boring. (Turner et. al, n.d.) Bogan stated that A
student-centered learning environment encourages students to become independent
learners and ultimately to be in charge of their own education. A good learning
environment makes students be disciplined and responsible with their own education as
they are having fun and having more interest on learning because of a comfortable
learning environment.
Other things to consider in making a conducive learning environment is the
cleanliness of the classroom and the organization of the facilities inside it, the lighting
inside the classroom and the noise within it. Cleanliness and the hygiene inside the
classroom affects the conduciveness of a learning environment if it is too messy and

unorganized. According to the study, Cleanliness and Learning in Higher Education,
about eighty-eight percent of students polled about the lack of cleanliness as a
distraction to their learning and an eighty-four percent to the students who said that they
wanted a clean room for a better and a positive learning environment. Insider Reports
stated that cleanliness was ranked as fourth most important element buildings should
have for a better learning environment for students and the top three elements that are
considered for a conducive learning environments are the lighting, noise around the
learning environment, and the air temperature inside the facility. According to them
eighty percent of the students wanted to be involve in cleaning their school facilities and
seventy-eight of them complained about the uncleanliness of the environment as a
danger to their health. (Clean Schools Promote Academic Success, 2008) Students
staying in an untidy and messy classrooms give them a negative mindset and increases
their stress level. With a clean classroom environment students becomes more involve,
active, and interested paying attention in class. (The Importance of Cleanliness in the
Learning Environment, 2014) According to Metro Creative Graphics Inc., good
conditions of classroom not only gives students a better quality of learning but also a
clean and an orderly classroom benefits students health and capacity to learn and
participate actively in class. (Cleanliness a Concern in the Classroom) According to
Michael Berry, a clean and a maintained school sanitation makes a student feel better
attending class because they know that they will be sitting on a clean chair, read on a
clean table and learn in a clean environment. Furthermore, a clean school environment
give students a secured feeling staying and learning inside the classroom as they are
already aware that threat of allergies and sickness is away from them. (Berry, 2002) In

[Type the document title]
order to maintain a healthy and clean learning environment the school should
implement and put trash bins inside the classroom to avoid leaving trashes inside.
(Suleman, 2014) In relation to that, having trash bins inside the classroom would
prevent students from going outside the classroom to throw their trashes, that way their
attention and focus in class will not be distracted. According to European Cleaning
Journal, forty-four percent of students said that they will gain more learning and
qualifications if their school environment were clean, orderly and organized. Forty-eight
percent of students stated that cleanliness of their learning environment are important in
effect to their education and forty-one percent said that cleanliness on their learning
environment is really important and really needs to be given attention. (Survey Shows
Importance of Cleanliness in Universities, 2013) According to San Diego State
University, cleanliness is the most important part to a conducive learning environment.
(Impact of the School Environment on Learning and Teaching, n.d.) According to
Education Watch, a clean and maintained learning environment gives student a higher
level of achievement. (Impact of the School Environment on Student Achievement,
2015) A clean classroom environment also affects the students behavior inside the
classroom. According to Michael Linsin, a clean classroom environment makes students
take care of the rooms facilities and the room itself. Students walking inside a clean
classroom environment feels that they are walking to an important and sacred place that
needs to be preserved and maintained. A clean and organized classroom environment
gives student a feeling of wanting to be a part of the classroom. This takes the attention
of the students to gain more interest on learning and going to school. He also stated
that a clean classroom affects and reflects the name of the school. If the school aim is

[Type the document title]
to be one of the greatest known school, the facilities and learning environment should
also be maintained clean and organized to maintain a good rank and standard as a
school. A messy classroom reflects the personality of the students, teachers and staffs
using it. Having a messy and an unorganized classroom make students bored, messy,
and lose attention and focus on class discussion and activities. Not only does students
lose their interest but also it gives a threat to their health and behavior. On the other
hand a clean and good classroom environment give students an assurance of safety
and security from health threats, also this will not only make them feel safe and
comfortable, a clean classroom environment also increase their interest on studying and
participation in class. (Linsin, 2011) A clean classroom tends to be the inspiration and
motivation of the students studying especially in college. A good classroom environment
affects a lot of factors to a students academic performance. Not only does a good and a
clean classroom makes a student comfortable learning it, also gives them the
assurance to their health. A clean and a presentable learning environment for college
students is a way to get their interest and attention in attending the class. It will not only
give them motivation to learn but also it will give them a good energy to be active in
participating and learning in class. A clean learning environment makes a student feel
that the school not only serves them with good education, a high standard way of
teaching, and good services with schools facilities but also, it gives them the feeling of
importance and being valued. Schools serving students with a conducive learning
environment make students gain more confidence and motivation in attending and
giving importance to attention in class. (How Comfortable Classroom Lead to a Better
Student Community, 2016) Students especially those who are in college sees a clean

Title: 3D Animation of a Conducive Learning Environment 9

[Type the document title]
classroom way to their success because it gives them the feeling of enthusiasm on
learning new things from school. College students having a tight schedule and lined-up
deadlines tends to be more stressed, distracted, and over fatigue. But with clean
classroom environment it reduces students stress and distraction from things that are
not related to a class discussion or activity.
Students spend most of their time at school which gives a big influence to their
habits, behaviors, health, and academic performance and participation. If students are
staying in a messy classroom, it is possible that the students adapts it and get used to a
messy environment. This would be a big problem as it is always hard to stop what is
being done for a long period of time. Health is also a big factor to students who are in a
messy classroom. Having an unorganized and a messy classroom gives a threat to
students health which will give a big impact on the students academic performance and
participation in class. Students wont be able to focus and give attention to class
discussion because a messy learning environment makes them irresponsible, lazy, and
lose interest on class participation. (The Importance of Maintaining a Clean School
Environment, 2014)
Schools should not only be the one responsible maintaining the learning
environments cleanliness and sanitation. Students, especially the ones who wants a
clean classroom should participate and have the initiative to maintain and organize the
classrooms cleanliness and sanitation. This way, they will not only have a maintained
clean classroom but also it will give them more motivation to learn as they are the one
who cleaned and organized it. Students participating in cleaning and organizing the
classroom gives them a responsible lifestyle that they will take outside the learning

[Type the document title]
environment and make them more active and gives them a fun and enjoyable way to go
to class and attend school regularly.
Not only does cleanliness of the learning environment affects the students
academic performance and learning but also the noise within the classroom. Noise
inside the classroom makes it hard for a student to focus and give a full attention on a
class discussion and activity. Noise around the school environment are not always
controlled. Most students discuss with their peers about unrelated things during class
discussions which affects the students who are willing to listen and improve their
knowledge. Others schools are near crowded places were noise are always heard
especially during class hours. James Abua Ewa stated that scientific evidence has
suggested that noise exposure of schools near crowded places which cause students
stress, difficulty in accomplishing school works and activities that leads to a low record
to school performance. (Ewa, n.d.) Students find it hard to comply with school
requirements and accomplish tasks on a given deadline because of lack of focus,
interest and too much stress that noisy environment gives them. Noises can easily put a
students mind away from the thoughts and ideas they have in mind while on class
discussion thus, give them a poor performance inside the class. Students tend to lose
concentration and forget thoughts on their minds that might be useful to their class
activity because of noise pollution.
Lighting inside the classroom also gives an effect to students performance and
participation in class. Some classroom lacks window covers especially in morning class
where sunlight is too bright. Students finds it hard to focus on class discussion because
they cant see what is being written, shown, and projected in the board. Eye contact is

[Type the document title]
also important between a teacher and a student, it gives more understanding and
showing interest in discussion, but because of the light reflection from the windows,
students are not able to see their teacher speaking in front of the class which makes
understanding hard for the students. Other lighting in some classrooms are too dim
which makes students sleepy and loses interest in class. Sleep is important to how a
human functions. The amount, quality and the ambient of a lighting affects the time a
person usually sleeps and change our biological clock. (Mott et. al., 2012) Lights that
are being emitted by the light bulbs inside the classroom either gives a bad effect or a
good effect on a students academic performance. (Tulane University, n.d.) Natural light
is an important thing to a classroom design. It gives improvement on students
performance inside the class, creates a conducive and healthy learning environment for
the students, and promotes the sustainable design of the classroom. (Slowakiewicz,
2016) Natural light gives different kinds of benefits to students learning and education.
It improves the attention, concentration, and the students healthy way of learning inside
the classroom. Natural lighting is very efficient on students learning and performance
and participation inside the class. A study in year 1991 showed that students tend to
read faster in a classroom that uses natural light. (Bristolite team, 2014) Use of natural
light is a healthy way for students better and productive learning, but classrooms should
be provided with enough window covers to reduce the amount of light inside the
classrooms.
Lastly, classroom temperature is also considered as one of the factors a
conducive learning environment should have. College students have tight schedules on
their course requirements, and they tend to give big efforts in order to comply with all

Title: 3D Animation of a Conducive Learning Environment 12

[Type the document title]
these requirements. Most college students lack sleep finishing deadlines and studying
for a class activity and exam. Tired students gets fast asleep if the classroom
temperature is too cold. If a classroom is too hot in temperature it would give a negative
effect on students understanding on class discussion. Students will lose interest in
exerting effort on class participation and will make them lazy to attend class. Not only
does a temperature gives effect on students academic performance, it also gives an
effect to students heath.
Lower temperature inside the classroom tends to give a good effect on students
academic performance. School works are quickly accomplished by students who use
low temperature inside the classroom, they tend to perform well and gets a high score
on examinations. However, a warm temperature in a classroom makes a student lose
focus in class and. It makes students easily tired and exhausted. On the other hand a
cold temperature is also not advisable for a students learning environment. Classrooms
should only have the exact amount of the air temperature inside where students feel
comfortable and active in class. (Effects of Classroom Temperature on a Students
Performance, n.d.)
Related Studies
Noise pollution contributes a big effect on a conducive learning environment. Too
much noise around students classrooms tend to put their mind and attention away from
studying and focus on class discussions. Internal classroom noise also gives a bad
effect on students performance in class. Young adults and college students was found
to be more affected on the noise outside their learning environment. It affects a big
impact on a students performance not only in class but also the students performance

in the examinations. (Shield, 2008) Noise pollution always give a bad effect on students
understanding,

attention,

low

concentration

and

focus

on

class

discussion,

memorization, communication, reading, and listening. In short, students lack verbal and
visual attention inside the learning environment because of too much exposure on noise
pollution while on class hours and classroom activity. (Shield, 2003) A noisy classroom
environment is not conducive for a students learning improvement. Noise pollution does
not only affect the students academic performance, it also affects students health.
Activities conducted inside the classroom sometimes vary whether noise pollution has a
bad effect or a good effect on students performance on school activities and
examination. (Edmonds, n.d.) The most often reported noisy part of a learning
environment is the classroom itself, followed by the crowded place outside the school
campus, peoples voice and loud discussions, and the students talking inside the
classroom. Students admitted that they are also the one who create a noisy
environment inside the classroom. Most students complain about not understanding and
not hearing what the teacher is discussing in front of the class, loss of concentration and
focus on class discussion and loss of interest in learning because of too much noise
being exposed during class hours. (So, 2014)
Lighting inside the classroom also gives an effect to students performance inside
the classroom. Dim lighting inside the classroom makes it hard for student to see and
read properly. Some researchers in the University of California in Berkley stated that
lights with higher spectra and good quality gives a better and more efficient light for
vision. It was said that students that are in a classroom using daylight as a light source
tends to work and finish the tasks faster compared to the students who dont use

[Type the document title]
daylight often inside the class. (Mirrahimi, n.d.) Schools used mostly light bulbs and
incandescent lights as a light source inside the classroom. Most of the light bulbs used
inside the classroom are too bright and sometimes are too dim. Dim lights and poor light
source gives students an eyestrain resulting to low understanding of the topic, and lose
of interest on the subject which sometimes causes stress and affects the academic
performance of a student. Used light source inside the classroom should be suitable for
the activities that are going to be conducted inside the class. Light source should be
enough for students to be able to read, write and be able to see clearly what is being
written and projected in the board. (Dahlan, 2015) Lighting inside the classroom that are
too bright and too dim may cause eye irritation and decrease a students vision. Lighting
also affects the sleeping habits of the students and their alertness inside the class.
(Sleegers, 2012) Lighting should be considered and be planned thoroughly because it
also has a big effect on students education and on the conduciveness of a learning
environment.
