Life Cycle Unit

2 Grade Science
EWRA
nd

Purpose:
The purpose of this formative assessment is to help the teacher and students
determine if they have successfully mastered the learning targets in a portion of
this unit before moving on to the rest of the Life Cycles unit. In this assessment,
students should be able to list and describe all parts or stages of a dragonflys, a
horses, and a plants life cycle. These organisms were picked in order to illustrate
to students that the details of life cycles can vary between organisms. This
assessment will be given prior to the end of the Life Cycles unit, and the results of
this assessment will inform the teacher about students levels of mastery in regards
to the learning targets, and if any material needs to be readdressed before moving
on in the unit. Students will complete a Self-Assessment after the quiz that allows
them to remedy incorrect answers, and the teacher will review the quiz and the
students corrections with them individually to ensure that the learning targets were
fully mastered before moving on in the unit.
Content Expectations:
L.OL.E.2 Life Cycles- Plants and animals have life cycles.

eventually die. The details of this life cycle are different for different organisms.

Directions: (to be read aloud to student prior to beginning of the quiz)
This quiz is over part of the Life Cycles unit pertaining to the life cycles of a
dragonfly, a horse, and a plant, and will ask questions to make sure you understand
the stages in each of these life cycles.
There are 2 questions on this quiz. The first question is worth 6 points, and the
second is worth 12, for a total of 18 points possible. There is one Construct/Create,
and one Stand Alone question. Record all of your answers on this quiz. After each
question, take a look at the rubric provided for that question to ensure that you
have covered all the necessary information to answer the question correctly. Then,
rate your answer based on the rubric and state why you would award yourself that
score. Space will be provided under the rubric for this self-evaluation.
If you have any questions on the quiz, please raise your hand and I will come to help
you. When you are done with your quiz bring it up to my desk and put it in the
basket face down. You may read quietly or work on other homework when you are
finished, but there will be no talking until everyone is done with their quiz. Youll
have 45 minutes to complete the test, which is plenty of time so dont rush!
Good luck everyone, read the directions as you go, and dont forget to put your
name and the date on the top of your paper before you begin!

Student Involvement:
The Self-Assessment is to be given to students along with their grades quizzes on a
different day. Students are to complete the assignment as well as correct their
mistakes on their quiz in order to be awarded points that may have been taken off
for incorrect/incomplete answers the first time they took the quiz. Points will only be
given back for correct fixes. This is to ensure that students have mastered learning
goals before moving on in the unit, and to make students aware of their own
learning. I will be meeting with students individually after these corrections have
been made to ensure that all students have a complete and accurate understanding
of the material.

Answer Key: (Any variations or similar answers would be considered correct.)

1. The first stage in the plants life cycle is the seed, which has a seed coat that
protects it. Then, the seed germinates and begins to grow into a seeding
which is a young plant that grows up out of the ground. The last stage is an
adult plant, which has a stem and leaves, and may have flowers that produce
more seeds.
2.
a. Egg: Dragonflies lay these in water to hatch.
b. Nymph: These live in water, and shed their coverings multiple times as
they grow.

LIFE CYLCES: Dragonfly, Horse,

Plant
1. Stand Alone
We have been learning about the life cycle of a plant, and what each stage in its life
cycle would look like. For this question, you will need to describe the life cycle of a
plant using complete sentences. Make sure to explain each of the 3 stages we
learned about, and describe what the plant might look like at each stage. Use a new
complete sentence for each stage in the life cycle. This question is worth 6 points.

2. Construct & Create

We have learned about the life cycle of a dragonfly and of a horse in order to see
that while all life cycles are similar, they are not all exactly the same. For this
question, you are asked to name and describe each stage in the life cycles of both
of these creatures. Look at the pictures provided the top 3 represent the life cycle
of a dragonfly, and the bottom 3 represent the life cycle of a horse. Write the name
of the stage above the picture and include one short sentence describing the stage
below the picture. This question is worth 12 points.
