Differences between Sight words & phonics


Sight words
are memorizing words
suitable for words that you usually see
everyday
such as:
1. Pronouns : me , you, they
2. Articles : a. the
3. Preposition : in, on

Phonics
x be memorized
bracking the words and put it together
( blend and read words)

Foundation of phonics
1. Print awareness pupils should be aware that printed words means
something
2. Alphabets recognition
3. Sounds of spoken language
4. Graphaphonic - Connecting no.1 and no.2
Teaching of phonic

Must refer to phonemic chart.


Short & frequent- not too much at once
Specific focus in every session ( focus on 1 or 2 sound)
Group by ability- change group with progress
Distinguish between letter names and sounds
Example: offer has the /f/ sound
Always reinforce the connection between sound & spelling

Activities of teaching phonic


1. What do you hear?
Listen and raise cards / do actions
2. Rhymes / chants- practicing the sounds ( articulating)
3. Games- ex: say 3 words, pick the word that is not same
4. Finger blending point to individual letters and produce the sound
5. Word building ex: changing of beginning sound
Pin, fin, bin
6. Arranging sort out words by sound
7. Bingo
8. Dictation
