Of immediate concern is the disruptive and costy ly rate of ESD related failures in Printed Wiring Board (PWB) components caused by improper handling, whether by operators, technicians or other personnel, and by failure to maintain proper environmental conditions in the equipment room or operating center. Of equal concern is the "dead-on-arrival" (DOA) ?WB, which was zapped somewhere, somehow after test by improper handling in the stockroom, during shipping or receiving, or during on-site installation. This notice provides a cause/effect overview, and a list of precautions for all Personnel who handle ESD sensitive devices. Although field technicians have been largely successful in reducing ESD caused damage, the potential for damage by operators, storeroom or shipping personnel and other non-technical people cannot be overlooked. A brief introduction to the subject follows, to help inform and equip all involved personnel as to how they can help protect TDC products from ESD damage: What Is ESD? When materials rub together, or are physically separa:ed from lirect contact, some of the electrons are mechanically stripped from the atoms. When this happens to an insulator, the electrons can't get back to the atoms, which forms a static charge, and a potential exists to ground. If the electrons find a vay to leave the insulator, an electrostatic discharge (ESD) occurs. Two familiar ESD happenings are lightning, and the spark-Jump from your finger to the doorknob during dry weather. Electro- static charges also make plastic wrap cling, clothes acquire lint, and hair stand on end vhen using a nylon comb. Why Is ESD a Problem? Many TDC products include PWB's which contain C-MOS and advanced Schottky technology microcircuit elements or chips. An unprotect- ed chip, off the board, can be damaged by static discharges as low as 50 volts. ‘About 1000 volts will damage the chip installed on the PWB. Keep in mind that a visible static spark is produced by about 4000 volts. Tear- ing off a piece of mending tape can easily generate an electrostatic charge of about 4000 volts. Chip damage occurs when the high voltage penetrates the oxide layer inside the chip. The results may be immediate failure of the PWB, or vorse, a disruptive functional failure sometime later while the system is on-line. # Changed since last issue Honeywell Process Management F-5737 6/79 ‘Systems Division ‘Tab __GENERAL INFORMATION Page__19. Date K Where Does ESD Come From? All of the common insulators can generate a static charge, especially plastics, styrofoam and synthetic fabrics. Even a stream of air can produce damaging ESD. Usually, however, people are the biggest source of ESD. We generate static charges with our movements, and carry the charges with us as we move about. ESD problems dramsically increase during the winter heating season vhen relative hundity levels inside are inherently low. When the relative humidity in the work areais less than about 402, both individuals and objects can carry ESD charges up to many thousands of volt: The situation becones even more critical with high resistance surface mater- tals (such as carpets and plastic seat covers) in work areas that are not environmentally controlled. What Can We Do About ESD? The relative humidity must be kept within a range of 40% to 60%. The type of flooring should be conductive tile, or conductive carpet. Work benches must have grounded, conductive surfaces. All tools such as soldering irons, meters, etc. must be grounded. Storage containers such as bags, bins, boxes, etc. must be of conductive material. When handl- ing PWB's or ESD sensitive components, an ESD approved wrist strap must be worn (see approved materials list), and it must be connected to a goot ground. Dust or clean couponents with natural bristled brushes, or ionized air. Use antistatic sprays to control the buildup of static charges on nonconductive surfaces. Apply spray by wiping on hard nonporous surfaces, and spraying on soft porous materials. Handle PWB's by holding them only by their edges. Overview Summary: Remember that people are the primary transfer source of electrostatic dis- charges which damage electronic components. When a charge is transferred from an initial source to a person, the charge often dramatically ‘increases. For example, when a polyethelene bag slides ing static charge may be only a few hundred volts. But when a person picks up that bag, the charge may increase to several thousand volts! That charge is sufficient to damage ESD sensitive components mounted on a PWB, if that Person carelessly picks up the PWB before the charge is safely drained avay. Remember that there are only two methods for preventing ESD damage: (1) Remove all materials capable of generating static electricity from| the work area; and, (2) Provide a safe discharge path for any static electricity generated in the work area. The fol- lowing practices and procedures must be observed to avoid ESD damage when the car is handled outside its enclosure, to guard against electrical overstress, and to maintain personnel safety: © Turn off power to the module or card file before removing or inserting a printed wiring board. © Handle the card by the edges only. Do not touch lands, edge connectors or components unless you are wearing a grounded wrist strap, and the card is on a conductive work surface. © When powering up a system before installation is complete, terminate all loose vires within the cabinet or console. If you are wearing clothing of such material, you must stand on a grounded floor mat while vearing a grounded shoe strap, or wearing a grounded wrist strap, at all times while handling circuit cards. Note: Take special care to keep the cards away from insulating material, because static charges cannot be drained off, except by dis- charge. © Do not carry unprotected cards across carpeting, unless it is grounded conductive carpeting, such as carpeting with conductive metallic threads woven into conventional fibers. Always keep the circuit card in its protective bag, until the PWB is actually needed. © All test equipment and tools must be connected to the metal card file, chassis or module frame with a ground wire, before touching the cari or internal wiring. © Cards must be handled/transported to and from the job site in their pro- tective bags.
