Say to Spell

Note: Rule 4 is the most common reason for a single vowel to say its long sound.
Note: Vowels are sounds that are unblocked and can be sustained or sung with the mouth open. Consonants are sounds that are blocked by the tongue, teeth, or lips. Consonants
cannot be sung. Have the students conduct an experiment to determine of a sound is a vowel or a consonant.
