Objectives:
OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this document is to identify and kill the Hanging
sessions using Process Explorer utility.

Process Explorer:
PROCESS EXPLORER
Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs
processes have opened or loaded.
The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows.
a) The top window always shows a list of the currently active
processes, including the names of their owning accounts.
b) whereas the information displayed in the bottom window
depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle
mode you'll see the handles that the process selected in the top
window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you'll see
the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded
Process Explorer also has a powerful search capability that will quickly
show you which processes have particular handles opened or DLLs
loaded.

KEY FEATURES

Applications: Process Explorer displays you a list of all running


applications. At any time, these applications can be suspended notably.
The tool also allows you to switch from one program to another.

Process: the system diagnostics can be done using the Task Manager.
More than that, Process Explorer highlights the processes that are
consuming the most memory. These can be completed at any time.
However, there remains a risk of impaired functioning of the entire
system.

Performance: in addition, the system performance can be analyzed


using Process Explorer which is presented in the history of the use of
the CPU and the other that of the exchange of files.

Users: some sessions cannot be closed normally when the system has
multiple users. Process Explorer enables to end the session which
aims at not losing files during the process.

Procedure to Run the Process Explorer


1. Log in to Server.
2. Navigate to the folder where Process Explorer is located.
3. Run procexp.exe
4. Click on Run

5. Initially when you run the process explorer it will prompt to Agree
the Terms and Conditions. Click on 'Agree'.

6. Once the terms & conditions you Agreed Process Explorer will be
opened.

7. Identify which process which is hanged.


8. To identify the process . Right click on particular process (Which
is hanged or Which is utilizing more CPU) and Go for Properties
(Eg:- I have selected Notes2.exe in the below screen as an
example).

9. Belore killing any process/Service make sure that you kill the
correct service. And also in the below screen shot you can also
find who has Started this particular service and when.

If it is an Essbase Hang you can find in the below screen
shot.

In the above screen shot ESSSVR.exe with PID 7240 is
utilizing 97 % of CPU memory. Right click and Kill that particular
process (You can also findout the above ESSSVR.exe is related to
which application).
