General points about internship

In order to achieve the objective of university reform,
one of the biggest challenges is to improve the
employability of graduates and to ensure their access to
labor market. To face these challenges several studies

EIT M CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPT.

Abel
Altaseb

INTERNSHIP FINAL REPORT

have analyzed the most important issues: mostly named

is lack of practical experience of university graduates.
Student misses during their educational process the
step in to the life of real work force. Practical oriented
ness curriculum is insufficient or still missing. The
workshops and laboratories at the faculty of engineering
are poorly equipped or old fashioned regarding the need
of

industrial

standard

even

at

local

level.

implementation guideline. Page l

The above statement indicates the main problem statement
that implicates the requirement of internship training.
As Ethiopian Institute of Technology Mekelle context, it is a
mandatory

system

to

place

students

to

company

organization with relevant to their education to apply

or

their

knowledge gained from their academic studies for four

months at the seven semesters of engineering academic
curriculum in proper scheduled, organized, supervised and
evaluated manner

by the hosting company and the

university.

1.2.

Objective of the intern

EIT M CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPT.

Altaseb

As we have seen above, intern is mandatory. The main aims

are described below;
To increase employability of future graduated of
engineering.
To include practical approach and experience in higher
education of engineering student
To strengthen the position of universities as a cooperation
partner of industry
To increase business development skill
To provide a space for research and development for
students
To provide for every student one internship as a
mandatory part of the revised curriculum
To meet the need of the current and future labor market
with practice oriented workforce for industries or
organizations and thus to contribute the competitiveness
of the economy
Opportunity to improve social competencies
Internship as economic and innovation benefit:
Interns come in with a high potential of innovative
and creative potential. they are not blind to faults in
their company and able to inspire solutions for the
problems through different point of views .Routines
could be questioned ,which would not be the easy by
employees who created the routines
Release of workloads in the departments if project
never followed up are given to interns

EIT M CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPT.

Abel
Altaseb

INTERNSHIP FINAL REPORT

Interns could open access to scientific or

technological knowledge, access to unique research
skills.

1.3.

Expected outcome

While implementing this new

curriculum there are

different outcomes expected. These are;

Increased employability through:
Shortening the transition period from study to
work
Increasing chances of successful application after
first entry to company
Decrease the 'shock' of practice after study
Gained

practical

as

well

as

organization

working

systems and process in the industry

Aware graduated about world of work
Transferred theoretical knowledge to industry

WORKING
EXPERIENCES OF THE
INTERNSHIP
3.1. How I Get into the company
& When the university industry leakage office gave us
the application letter at the end of the 6th semester
for searching the company which could be the best
place for internship training. My first trail was in
ECBG construction. They gave me a positive
response. I have taken my acceptance letter. Since
the company is GC-1 construction, I havent tried to
apply in another company.
At the end of 7th semester march 5, 2012 after two days of
my arrival in Addis Ababa. I have reported for the main
office of the company which is found around kaliti. They
did sent a message to the project manager of their main
site to communicate with me. I just have gone to the site
around piazza. He was there in the site. We have been
discussed about my start date and working process. We
have set the start date to be after two days.
March 8 was my first day of the four month
internship. I have introduced myself to staff member of the
site and getting started. My first two days was observing
general working atmosphere of the site.

3.2. Working section

The company has two project sites. One of them is a
residential buildings around south of Addis Ababa. The second
is G+8 mixed use building with two basements which is found
around piazza covers 1296.59m2.
The site has a project manager with no resident
(construction) engineer. He also executes the task of the
construction engineer. I was participating in performing over
burden tasks of the manager with my friend fikremariam.
The working sections we involved in were;
Supervising in approval of different work tasks in the
building processes such as formwork fixing, concrete
casting and concrete mix and so on. Since this task
was the additional burden of the manager.
In the site Office; take off sheet tasks, specification
for other residential buildings.
Preparing daily site diary and progress report was
also our section duty.

The company has its own organization and work flow starting
the main head office and the project manager up to the daily
laborers.
But the staff members of head office were not organized well
for the response of the project sites.
J The staffs in the organizational work flow described
below ;

Project manager

Manages the whole project by dividing work units and

assigning to individual staff members.

He is also responsible in motivating individuals; avoid
wastage of material and resource considering benefit

and pure workmanship.

In our site he is also acting as a site supervisor. He
makes sure work is executed according to specification
and drawing, makes the work and workers to follow the
time schedule.

INTERNSHIP FINAL REPORT

& The tasks I have been involved in are;

Preparing takeoff sheet required for payment
certificate.
Estimating Material required for the future
tasks such as reinforcement, cement,
aggregate, sand e.t.c.
Preparing specifications (bill of quantity )
Preparing daily site diary and progress
report.
Observing (supervising ) and approval of
tasks in the construction such as
reinforcement placing and fixing, formwork
fixing , concrete mix and casting
Quality control and reporting problems
encountered to the project manager
..And so on
& Before starting any work to be performed in the site.
There are different processes and steps we have been
doing to execute a task ;
Step one: understand and discuss about the task to be
performed clearly with our project manager and the general
foreman.
Step two: observing if it could be executed currently at the
site.
For example; supervision before, during and after casting
should be observed before taking the responsibility to
supervise.

Step three: referring any documents that were used for

specific task and other considerations of the building such as
-

Takeoff sheet and specifications done before.

Referring daily diaries and inspection requests
Surveying data and earthwork profiles
Design changes ( mat foundation into isolated
footing)
- Contract documents and letters between the
consultant, contractor and other sides.
Step four: try to do the task and check whether it is
appropriate or not.

The tasks could be described below with their

specific procedures.
3.4.1. Preparing takeoff sheet and

payment certificate
J Takeoff is measuring from the drawing and entering the
dimensions on to specially ruled dimension paper.
Take off sheet: - is a chart (sheet) used to determine the
quantity of the particular item executed. It needs a personal
skill of describing the item of work for one, to understand
easily as per described.
The chart consists of four rows with timing, quantity, result
and description respectively.
After specifying quantity of work it could be multiplied by
the unit price and all the task proceeds like this and the
payment certificate can be prepared.
EIT M CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPT.

22

Abel
Altaseb

INTERNSHIP FINAL REPORT

There are differences in units of the quantity of work

executed.
For example;
Formwork per m2
Concrete casting per m3 ( sometimes the unit rate
could be done in m2 considering thickness for
uniform task )
Reinforcement per kg

3.4.2. Estimating material required

Construction work could be carried out with proper time and
resources scheduling. In order to finish any projects in its
deadline the project manager and construction engineer
requires sufficient materials delivery as per the schedule.
The project manager estimate the material required and
report for quick delivery. But there was a slow response from
the main office for the project.
The estimated materials are;

Reinforcement
Cement
Aggregate
Sand and so on
In estimating reinforcement required from the working
drawing the length and diameter should be identified.
The reinforcement length should be divided to the one
standard (12 m). Then the required no of bar can be
specified.
For cement, aggregate and sand the cost break down of the
project listed out the quantity per unit work data which can be
multiplied with the m3 work and gives the quantity required.

For our experience we have been doing a revision of the bill of
quantity of our project site. Beside this we have done the
same task for a designed residential building that could be
constructed around dukem .
& In bill of quantity calculation the working drawing and
unit rate analysis is required for calculating the quantity
of work and the cost it required.

3. 4.4.preparing site diary and progress

report
The daily progress of the site work could be recorded in the daily diary.
It includes number of labor in the site, on site plant and equipment,
material delivery and descriptions of work done.

The main uses of this diary or progress report are;
Whenever delay occurs in the process of construction because of
accident, rain and material delivery delay. The reason could be
referred.

3. 4.5. Supervision and approval of tasks

Supervision is a branch of construction Engineering that
examines, inspects and control the overall performance the quality and
progress of construction works as per specifications under a contract.
Since aim and objective supervision work is mainly quality control it
plays a very important role towards successful construction of civil
works.
In our site there was no resident engineer which follow up and
supervise the tasks that can be carried out in the site. It is additional

task of the project manager. We have shared this additional burden to

follow up the progress in approving the task.
I would like to describe the site supervision work what we are
being executing plus how to execute them by classifying them in
terms of the items of work executed such as :

Floor slab and beam

Elevation column
Side Shear wall
Lift pad and its wall
Stair case

Before discussing the specific methods for executing the above given
work tasks. We should have to see common processes.
When we arrived in the site, they had already finished footing pad,
elevation column in basement 2 and casting of small portion of
basement one slab including the ramp section.
So, our report begins from basement one slab up to the ground floor
column.
The consecutive tasks in concrete casting were
- placing and fixing of reinforcement as per the
design
- formwork fixing considering the concrete cover
required
- Check for the electrical and sanitary installations
if it is required there.
- the last is concrete casting process
A supervision should be performed before concrete casting (in the
reinforcement and formwork stage respectively), during casting and
after casting. These processes apply for all concrete casting work.
Supervision before concrete casting includes;
EIT M CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPT.

28

INTERNSHIP FINAL REPORT

number , length , diameter and arrangement of

reinforcement should be checked
overlap length should be greater than 4 times the diameter
of the reinforcement
stirrup spacing should be checked
Provision of spacer with the required dimension to keep the concrete cover.
Check availability of material required for the casting process.
The quality of formwork must be attained. Cleanliness smoothens and
treatments with release agent for the surface of formwork are the main
points. Appropriate vertical and horizontal alignment should be checked

Figure 6

columns after formwork fixing and slab after reinforcement placing

Supervision during concrete casting includes;

Specify the appropriate depth of casting and keep its
alignment.
Appropriately use of a vibrator.
check the availability of enough man power and machineries
Check the mix ratio (1:2:3) and the mix itself including the
water content.

Way of the execution of the casting work (way of mixing,

way of placing, distance the concrete travel from the mixing
station to the casting station and the before initial setting
time it should be casted.
Supervision after concrete casting includes;
Check for the time of formwork removal 16 hour for side and
28 days for bottom formwork.
Proper curing and handling after casting and so on.
All the above points are common for all type of casting works. Next we
can see them in detail tasks.

A)Floor slab and beam.

All the above processes could be supervised. Additional work tasks
are ;
Concrete casting should be stop at one third location
kebeleto must be provided to keep the effective
depth properly

B) Elevation column and Side shear wall

Concrete could be casted up to the bottom level of the
next floor beam.

C) Lift pad(footing) and its wall

Check excavation level according to bounce depth of
the lift.
Check continuity of the concrete casting in the pad and
lift wall
& In our case there was high seepage condition in the underground.
Even in the water flowing condition the lean concrete placed and

the bar could have been fixed by pumping out the water into the
road drainage. As shown in figure 7 and 8 in the next page.

D) Stair case
Since, various types of reinforcement are there in stair
case due to different action. So it must be checked
appropriately.
Casting process should stop at the end of the landing
portion.

3.4.6. Quality control and problem

reporting
One of the main objectives of the supervision task is for quality control.
In every step of the project work the proper quality must attained.
Especially in a finishing work the quality influence the aesthetic value
of architectural aspect.
In our site we have seen different quality control techniques that can
be used in the site. If any inappropriate thing happens we could report
for our project manager and he can judge on it.
In addition to the contractor the consultant also controls the quality
during his inspection time. Because he has a duty to approve and
disprove work tasks in the site.

3.5. Challenges in the

internship
Challenges are one of the good opportunities in collecting valuable
experiences. In our internship there was a lot of challenges that
occurred in the site.
These are ;
Disagreements with the general and assistant foremen
in identifying a problem happened during work. They
were not willing to accept and solve.
Improper interpretation of the engineering theoretical
aspect in actual site work. For example; concrete
casting cant stop appropriately around one third of
slab and beam. Sometimes even around center.
EIT M CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPT.

34

INTERNSHIP FINAL REPORT

Abel
Altaseb

There is no software related work task in the company.

So, we didnt get to know with softwares.
As I have indicated before even if our site is wide
having a lot of work task but it reduce d our opportunity
to get to know with different work tasks at the same
time such as finishing work, real-estate work and so on.
In the first month it was so difficult to know site
languages for the executed work task. This
communication problem was one of the challenges
happened.

Measures to overcome
these Challenges
3.5.

&

As an intellectual any challenges occurred in a specific field must

be solved fittingly. For the site disagreements with the foreman
we have discussed with our supervisor (project manager) and he
was delimited our boundaries in the site work especially in fault
finding.

In the theoretical aspect, we have preferred to read more on the

specific problem and engineering aspects. This could have been lead
us to convince them. This was the best option. Our supervisor also
gave us different assignments to be done in home by referring various
literatures.
In software related challenges, we have tried to get to know with
program and softwares such as ms-project, AutoCAD and etab in
private ways.
In our four month internship we have visited neighborhood sites and
others to understand different works tasks. Those are not executed
currently in our site.

Design changes in the

section
3.6.

In a civil engineering project design changes happen frequently. This is

because;
Lack of proper site investigation before the design.
For example; soil test shows dumpy soil but actually
rocky.
Problem during the design session by the designer and
so on.
In our project the design changes were;
Mat foundation designed initially but after actual excavation the
site was a rocky which doesnt need a mat type foundation. So it
have been changed into isolated footing.
External Retaining structure was designed in the mat condition.
But it is converted into side shear wall constructed along the
edge column alignment.
Level of ramp (used for entrance of car from basement one into
two) at the second basement was having a large slope that was
not recommended for ramp. So it was adjusted by preventing
extra column for supporting and reduction of slope.
There was no fire escape stair case from second basement up to
the ground just the lift was the only access. But it was provided
in front of the lift.
The main stair location and its shape (spiral to normal) changed.
These are the main design changes that occurred in the project. When
the designer provides as such a design changes sometimes minimize
costs up to four million birr for the foundation change. But most of the

time the change occurred for covering the design or construction

error.

Safety and economy in the

design and construction.

3.7.

Safety and economy are the basic concept in engineering. Every work
task could be evaluated with in this two criterias. In the developed
countries safety plus the economy could be fulfilled. But in our country
most of the construction is un economical to reach a maximum safety.
The same is true in our site almost all section of the construction pass
the safety line but fail in the economic criteria.
For example ; one cantilever part of a stair(designed as tension occur
at the top ) could be additionally supported with intermediate beam
and columns.

Uneconomical work tasks in our site are;

C -30 was designed for footing pad, grade beam and for columns.
Because of less supervision in the site all shear walls, slabs and
other beams used with a c -30 strength but it was designed with c
-25.
For example; let us see the cost of 195.88 m3 shear wall

time, energy, or both. In other words the abilities that

one possesses.
The achievements of the internship according to different
skill upgrading could be shown in this chapter.

4.1. Practical skill

An engineer should be able to Use a wide range of tools,
techniques and equipment (including software) to their
specific discipline and Use laboratory and workshop
equipment to generate a valuable data.
They also able to Develop promote and apply safe system of
work.
We have tried to experience some of them. Such as ;
Techniques used by the carpenters for performing
their tasks such as
- method of conduit water level for
determining equal levels
- cizzling for finishing work and casting
problem.
- Site supervision techniques as it is
described in the previous chapters.
Project management or scheduling using ms- project
program.

4.2. Theoretical skill

EIT M CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPT.

39

INTERNSHIP FINAL REPORT

Abel

& Initially, for performing any task in engineering. It

requires a theoretical knowledge which could be
developed well in a practical aspect. Internship can
arrange a chance to develop a theoretical skill as well.
Because when we observe a new thing in the
construction process we have tried to read more on it
and discuss on the theoretical aspect.
For example; concrete casting in slab and beam stops out
of the one third ranges. After several days casting could
proceed by coating a nito-bond (epoxy). We have deal more
on it in the theoretical side by referring.
An engineer must upgrade his theoretical knowledge in his
continuous work process in order to have a safe and
economical achievement.

4.3. Inter personal

communication skill
& Interpersonal communication is the process by
which people exchange information, feelings, and
meaning through verbal and non-verbal messages. It is
face-to-face communication. It is not just about
what is actually said - the language used - but how it is
said and the non-verbal messages sent through tone of
voice, facial expressions, gestures and body language.
Communication by itself has a vital role in human being
life.

Construction site has its own communication method for

performing works efficiently. We have developed different
interpersonal communication skills Such as
In passing orders to the foremen( giving a chance
for them to think on it )
Understanding the description of tasks and
materials that are executed in the site by the
workers. For example site languages in different
materials, carpenters method of identifying their
tasks.
Some of the site languages are summarized below.

4.4. Team playing skill

Teamwork has always been a valuable characteristic of
successful organizations. Employees working in a team deliver

more productivity and better solutions. Being a great team

player helps you climb up the ladder of career success. Team
building skills have to play an important role in getting
promotion or successfully landing a job.
So, we have tried to upgrade our skill regarding team playing
with my friend and staff members. Those are;
Our Working speed and efficiency increase in playing
as a team.
Even we have different personal behaviors but we
were interacting in a good way with a good tolerance.
We were set a goal to reach on at the last of internship
Open communication in actual site work developed as
a team playing member.

4.5. Leadership skill

& At its most elementary level, leadership means that
one person influences another. An organization that
supports the concepts of shared leadership encourages
employees at all levels to assume this role where it is
appropriate.
The function of leadership include stating basic values,
announcing goals, organizing resources, reducing tensions
between individuals, creating coalitions, coalescing workers,
and encouraging better performance.

manager that gave us a good opportunity to gather his
leadership skill (his influence to other). In supervising
tasks and whenever the project manager was out of the
site. We were leading the site. This was the good
opportunity to observe our weaknesses and to share the
supervisor skill.

4.6. work ethics and related issues

&

Civil engineers uphold and advance the integrity, honor

and dignity of the civil engineering profession by:
1. Using their knowledge and skill for the enhancement of
human welfare and the environment.
2. being honest and impartial and serving with fidelity the
public, their employers/employees and clients;
3. Striving to increase the competence and prestige of
the civil engineering profession; and
4. Supporting the professional and technical societies of
their disciplines.

The above points are fundamental principle of our work

ethics. Most of the time the behavior we heard about civil
engineers was not good.
Still there is a problem in most of them regarding their work
ethics. But we have discussed and understood the right thing

to be performed. Our supervisor has a good experience in the

construction work. These are;
Being honest for your mind firstly and then you will be for
others.
Use your skill properly for the task you have to do
properly.
Share your knowledge to others in the right manner.

Related issues with the work ethics were;

- Arrive at site on time(punctuality)
- Office disciplines ( not disturbing others by
music and other staff )
- Being Patient for any conflict happened.

4.7. Entrepreneurship skill

& An entrepreneur is a person who has possession of a
new enterprise, venture or idea and assumes significant
accountability for the inherent risks and the outcome.
An entrepreneur is one who
undertakes an enterprise,
especially a contractor, acting as intermediately
between capital and labor."
Most successful entrepreneurs share certain personal
attributes, including: creativity, flexibility, leadership, passion,
self-confidence, and so on
I could evaluate my internship according to these terms.

Creativity is the spark that drives the development of

new products or services, or ways to do business. It is
the push for innovation and improvement. Our
company had been working only in rental construction
equipments. Mean while they had started to participate
in contractor task because the sector becoming wider.
Flexibility is the ability to move quickly in response to
changing market needs. It is being true to a dream
while also being mindful of market realities. For
example; when a gypsum board requirement increases
for a residential building we have to change to it.
Leadership is the ability to create rules and to set
goals. It is the capacity to follow through to see that
rules are followed and goals are accomplished. Our
sector could be performed with a corporation within
different labors. These need a good leadership.
Passion is what gets entrepreneurs started and keeps
them there. It gives entrepreneurs the ability to
convince others to believe in their vision. So we have
developed the necessity of passion for a success as an
entrepreneur.
Self-confidence comes from thorough planning, which
reduces uncertainty and the level of risk. To do what u
wants to do self confidence is necessary.

Discussion, recommendation
and conclusion
5.1. Discussion and
recommendation
In all this four months we have gathered various experiences.
This indicates that we have fulfilled the objective of the
program. But there were a weakness in different section of
the company.
Other than the project manager almost all the staffs were not
responsible for their duty. Sometimes they ignore the
engineering aspects during their work. Look at the figure
below.

& Computer access and internet service has a vital role in
construction process and for interns. We have been
using our laptop for performing different tasks. It is
better to have it in the site office for good file
management and to get to know with current
engineering aspects.
& The UIL office tried to observe and advice us in our
working place. This task has to be improved to perform
it more than two times.

5.2. Conclusions
This is all about internship training. I hope we have
gathered a lot of experiences in ECBG construction.
This report compiled it as well. I would have a
confidence to work in any project after graduation. In
all four months we have been practicing different kinds
of skills specially managing, problem solving and follow
up the construction process.
Other than the theoretical and practical skills, the
internship process has brought us a positive impact on
our communication skill, work ethics like punctuality,
reliability, commitment and cooperation with
colleagues.
The program has a big role in bringing a qualified
professional engineer.
I would like to thank those who have helped me
throughout my stay as an intern. I had the most
pleasure with the program and hope that it has
benefited me as much as I think it did. I also want to
appreciate the company for letting me stay with them
and for showing their full cooperation.
