TRANSMISSION TO THE FUTURE

Who are we and where

have we come from?
Its an exciting story of electronic expertise that evolved almost 60 years in a
company that developed within a socialist economy. Its an uplifting account
of a hard-fought and successful transition from socialism to capitalism - from
analogue to digital transmission. Customer demands challenged us to be one
of mayor players in broadcasting world.

Elti draws on its almost 60 years of

experience in providing professional
broadcasting products and network
solutions for broadcasters and network
operators searching for innovative and
effective solutions.
The beginnings of Elti date back
to 1955 when the Elektroradio
company started with production of
antennas, antenna components and
high frequency cables. In 1961 the
company was renamed Elrad. By that
time production had expanded to
analogue transmitters and translators
and TV components.
Elrad provided the equipment, the
service and know-how for the entire
TV and FM network of the Slovenian
national public service broadcasting
when it was established in 1964. After
merging with Gorenje in 1972, Elrad
became the Yugoslav market leader for
the broadcast industry and consumer
products. In 1990 the company

was privatized and Elti took over the

production of broadcasting equipment
and services for the industry. Seeking
to move into European Union and
world markets, Elti supplied its first
components for DVB-T networks
already in 1999.
The beginning of 2006 was marked
by the launch of its new automated
production line which even nowadays
assures optimized costs and short
delivery times to customers. With this
production line quality and reliability
have been taken to a higher level due
to the production line tracking system
and the burn-in control. From
2013 Elti incorporated also in-house
surface treatments in production
process which brings to the passive
range of equipment new added
value from perspective of quality,
delivery and flexibility.
Elti has successfully faced and met
the challenge of digital terrestrial

Doherty Power Amplifiers

Thanks to the Doherty amplifier concept, Eltis UHF amplifiers are available in Doherty mode also which makes terrestrial
broadcasting extremely efficient. Due to higher efficiency into comparison to classical amplifier design, new amplifier series
brings to network operator cost reductions over the entire system lifetime. Amplifiers are available in a compact 19 only
3U rack mount in air and liquid cooling solutions. A scalable and flexible configuration allows now higher power density into
single rack.

Control and Monitoring

The integrated control unit provides full control over the assembly and additional options/features. Control software EDM
(WEB based Elti Device Manager) with an user friendly graphic interface comes as standard for all Elti products. It features:

Complete device management/configuration over single IP address,

13

The control software offers the same comprehensive functionality whether used locally or remotely via TCP/IP, SNMP or GSM
networks. External connections are provided by:
Ethernet LAN/WAN for local/network access
GSM/GPRS modem (optionally)
The central control unit allows integration into any SNMP based telemetry or supervisory system. It offers control and integration
of third party equipment into single transmission system.

Optimum cooling system

The cooling system plays important role for the overall efficiency of the entire system, especially for liquid cooled system, which
is why it has been optimized throughout.
Air cooled solutions are equipped with redundant fan system on several levels including rack composition. Each component of
system includes redundant and efficient temperature fan speed regulation which greatly contributes to lifetime of system.
The liquid cooling system is equipped with efficient and proven components. The pump rack, which can be integrated into
standard 19 rack, contains two pump modules that ensure high system efficiency. Outdoor components such as heat
exchangers are designed in redundant configuration, including redundant dual blower system which greatly contributes to
system availability.

Band-pass filters are used to attenuate frequencies outside a narrow pass-band. They are
commonly used as components in the design of combiners, for the attenuation of noisy side
bands, to achieve additional decoupling between transmitters installed in close proximity in the
same antenna system, and to combine digital channels with existing analogue channels.
The band-pass filters are factory tuned to the desired operating channels. All filters are
retunable on whole frequency bands III (VHF) and bands IV and V (UHF).
Band-pass filters consist of 3, 4, 6, 7 or 8 magnetic coupled coaxial resonators with
adjustable coupling. One end of the resonator is open-circuited and the other short-circuited
and tuning is accomplished by rotating the circular central conductor at the lower end of
each resonator. The coaxial input and output lines are coupled to the first and last resonator
by magnetic coupling loops.
ELTI critical mask filters for digital operation are 6, 7 and 8 cavity filters with elliptical response to
satisfy critical mask requirements or adjacent channel configuration for DVB, ISDB-T and ATSC
standards. Critical mask filter with 6 cavities are generally used with ELTI transmitters only.
Main advantages of these filters are:
foreshorten folded combline design,
iris couplings with fine bandwidth regulation,
retunable on whole frequency bands III, IV and V.
Filters are part of ELTI complete solutions:
transmitter TERX, as output filter available on request,
regenerative repeater ARX, as output filter available on request,
combiners for adjacent channel configuration and/or non-critical & critical mask
requirements.

Operating Power
The maximum operating power of a filter is limited by heating and peak voltage.
Heating is caused by high currents on resonators and are the main cause of dissipation due to
Joule effect. Other secondary causes are the dissipations in the remaining circuit elements and
in the dielectrics. To reduce losses, particularly at high frequencies, the conducting surfaces
need to be excellent conductors. An accurate analysis of dissipations conducted using
electromagnetic simulations makes it possible to optimize the construction for minimal loss.
The peak voltage represents the absolute power limit of a filter. The possibility of a breakdown
occurring is related to the dielectric rigidity and the various ambient conditions (temperature,
humidity and pressure). An accurate analysis of the breakdown limits requires specific
electromagnetic and circuit simulations. All ELTI filters are designed for a voltage safety factor of
at least 2 at the maximum rated power.

Operating temperature
All ELTI filters are designed to operate in severe environmental conditions such as -5 to
+55 C, as expected inside a typical transmitter operating in a standard environment (EN 300
190, Class 3.1). In these conditions, the maximum temperature raise is specified for each
filter (typically < 40 C). For safety reasons, and for optimum performances and filters lasting,
the maximum filters body temperature should never exceed 70C, and the recommended
operating temperature limit is 60C.
The operation at the maximum rated power generally requires some cooling:
conventional cooling,
conventional cooling with heat sinks added on the top of the filter,
UHF high power filters can be optionally equipped with a state-of-the art water cooling
circuit, to be inserted in liquid cooled transmitters.
Type of cooling is given in specifications. Extremely low temperatures (< -15 C) should be
avoided, as they could deteriorate the filters due to excessive thermal shocks, primarily during
the transient warm-up.

Passive Intermodulation
All of the passive components involved with digital signals must possess a very high degree of
linearity, to prevent Passive Inter Modulation (PIM). All ELTI passive components are designed
and fully meet the typical PIM < -153 dBc requirement.

ANTENNA SYSTEMS, FILTERS AND COMBINERS

In specifications are stated power in rms (digital mode) and p.s. (analogue mode) for 8 MHz
channel (UHF) and 7 MHz (VHF). Filters for digital operation can be used for analogue or dual
cast mode. Use multiplier 1,5 of rms power to calculate peak sync power. For digital 7 MHz
channel use multiplier 0,9 and for 6 MHz channel multiplier 0,75.

TYPE DESCRIPTION

Electrostatic Protection
All ELTI filters have an adequate electrostatic protection on input / output connectors, i.e. the
inner terminals are electrically connected to ground (DC short circuit), with a current capacity
always much higher than the one of the connector itself.

TYPES
3dBC4-C100
3dBC4-C1K0
3dBC4-C5K0

The 3 dB couplers can be used as power-splitters or as power combiners, and their most
common application is as components in the design of combiners. They are also used to
combine power amplifiers to the transmitters and translators.
They consist of two identical parallel transmission lines coupled over a length equal to 1/4 and
mounted in a common exterior conductor.

3dBC4-C30K
3dBC4-C40K
3dBC4-P100
3dBC4-P1K0

The couplers are designed to achieve coupling differences in the operating frequency range at
the output ports. The phase-shift between the two outputs is always 90 and is independent of
frequency. The isolation between the two ports depends heavily on the VSWR of the port loads.

Combiners are used to combine the signals of several transmitters or repeaters into one
antenna system. In view of the unique configurations required by individual systems, Elti
perform a detailed analysis before recommending customised solutions to the customer
meeting following requirements:
The combiners have to sustain the total output power, resulting all input powers,
dissipated power and peak voltage.
Return losses of each component designate the output return loss of the combining
system, which is even more important in complex system (i.e. adjacent channel
configuration and/or critical mask with several inputs).
Losses have to be limited as low as possible. Combining systems with many inputs
additionally increase the losses due to cascading of many elements.
High isolation between the inputs is extremely important. Low isolation produces
intermodulation and additional losses. Therefore the filters have to be highly selective
for the challenging channel displacements (i.e. adjacent channels)

Combiners with mask filters for digital operation

Combiners for digital operation are most commonly CIF combiners or even as CIF
combiner with filter on broadband. Two possible designs are used for digital combiners
(see figures below).
Combiner with mask filters in transmitters is cost effective design when upgrading network
from analogue to digital. Existing combiners are used without any mask (3 or 4 cavity
filters), only to combine all the channels at maximum isolation level to antenna. Additionally,
minimum losses and group delay variation and maximum isolation are required. Mask
filters are placed in the transmitter (6, 7 or 8 cavity filters) to build non-critical or even
critical mask configuration. Adjacent channel configuration is generally not possible.
Second solution is the modern way to build digital network with mask combiner, which
has the function of combining several channels to single antenna and to build the mask
(non-critical or critical), even in adjacent channel configuration. Digital transmitters and
combining system have to be designed together to downsize insertion loss and maintain
the amplitudes and phases.
Elti transmitters are equipped with auto adaptive digital precorrection which requires
sampling with RF probe after the mask filter (solution 1) or on the combiners output
(solution 2). In this case the exciter is able to correctly process the measurement in the
presence of other channels.

Starpoint Combiners
Starpoint combiners (type A) represent a compact and effective solution when there is large channel spacing between the
transmitters and translators. In the starpoint configuration it is possible to combine up to 4 band pass filters. The starpoint
combiner is pretuned to the requested frequency, and is easily retuned on site.
Line lengths in starpoint combiners are dependent on channels. Elti has developed software for calculating a custom combiner
solution. A different solution is calculated for each specified channel configuration and input power in a matter of seconds.

Constant Impedance Combiners

Constant impedance combiners (type B) consist of pairs of 3 dB couplers and band-pass filters with the dummy load connected
in modules for each of the narrow-band inputs to the combiner. They are commonly used when the channels of the transmitters
or repeaters are close (even adjacent channel configuration), or when connecting a new module to a broadband input in order to
open additional channels.

A combination of starpoint and constant impedance combiners

When more than four transmitters or repeaters need to be connected in the same antenna system, a combination of starpoint and
constant impedance combiners can be installed (type C).

Stretchline Combiners
Stretchline combiners (type S) are adjustable across
the entire UHF band and feature and wide range of
filters with different numbers of cavities, high isolation,
low levels of insertion loss and are available in scalable
solutions from 5 W to 20 kW per channel.

ANTENNA SYSTEMS, FILTERS AND COMBINERS

Specifications for TV stretch line combiners

Where the frequency separation between signals is not too narrow, stretchline combiners offer a cost-effective and
reliable solution. They consist of a pair of 3 dB couplers interconnected by two transmission coaxial cables whose
electrical lengths differ by half a wavelength at the difference frequency of the combined signals. Isolation between the
two transmitters and translators inputs or cross insertion loss is determined by the isolation of the primary 3 dB coupler.
Transmission loss or insertion loss depends on both the channel spacing and the middle frequency. This type of combiner
is not tuneable, but can be modified by replacement of the phasing line.

Low pass filter are used for removing spurious high frequency signals. Solid state transmitters
produce high frequency emissions (harmonics and frequency conversion products) which
generally cannot be removed by band pass filters, as the high side stop band attenuation of
power filters is limited by waveguide modes. Suitable low pass filters with 13 poles suppresses
these spurious emissions on the complete UHF band.

Patch panels are used for manual RF switch over in many applications described below. On
request patch panels are designed with 2-way RF switches in order to automate the RF switching.
Patch panels are produced with any number of ports, limited only by customers space. Interlock
switches are integrated to safely operate while changing positions and not to malfunction any part
of equipment.

ANTENNA SYSTEMS, FILTERS AND COMBINERS

Patch panels

Patch panels are used to provide 1+1 passive reserve. The additional RF motorised switch permits
1+1 active reserve. The 6 port patch panel is the most commonly used to achieve antenna system
redundancy. The AS is divided into two halves permitting normal operation in either the upper or
lower half.
Patch panels are available with any connector from DIN 7/16 to EIA 6 1/8. Power dividers or
couplers are also used. Patch panels are installed within a metal frame, and are also available with
a free-standing metal frame. On request, measurement and other equipment can be mounted
within the frame to reduce space requirements.
High power antenna systems can be achieved by stacking antenna panels in tiers. In such cases
split system with patch panel is used, which allows feeding of the antenna system with half power
or even full transmitter power when only half antenna system is operating.
Another solution to use patch panels is with 3 dB coupler to combine two individual transmitters
operating on the same channel.
Patch panel with combiner is useful in case of a malfunction of one of the transmitters connected
either to wide band or broadband input of the combiner and needs to be switched to a dummy
load to perform repairs or test, while other transmitter is still on air.

The appropriate alignment of horizontal and vertical dipole pairs offers left or right-hand, circular
or elliptical antenna system polarization. Antennas are available with aluminium or steel dipoles.
Dividers for the antenna dipoles are not part of the antenna panel, allowing flexible dividing/
cabling of the antenna system. The power input of 20 kW per panel enables high power
professional FM antenna systems.
Both antenna panels are suitable for high power antenna systems, achieved by stacking in
tiers. In such cases split system is used, which allows feeding of the antenna system with half
power or even full transmitter power when only half antenna system is operating.
Radiating dipoles are anodized aluminium (type FMA II/08-CP). Antennas are often installed
in severe weather conditions therefore we developed antennas with hot dip galvanized steel
dipoles (type FMA II/08-CP Fe).

This series of filters are designed to attenuate frequencies outside a narrow pass-band in
the FM frequency range. The band-pass filters consist of two magnetic coupled coaxial
resonators with adjustable coupling and input/output coupling loops. The power rating
of these filters depends on the dimensions of the filter and the shape of the amplitude/
frequency profile. A range of filters are available in design with 2 or 3 cavities to cover the
power range from 300 W to 20 kW.
Beryllium bronze is used for spring materials, giving the tuning section a life-time guarantee.
All filters are factory tuned to specified frequency. They are also retunable on whole
frequency band.

FM couplers
TYPES
3dBC2-C5K0
3dBC2-C10K

The 3 dB couplers can be used as power-splitters or as power combiners and their most
common application is as components in the design of combiners.
They consist of two identical parallel transmission lines coupled over a length equal or
approximately equal to l/4 and mounted in a common exterior conductor.

3dBC2-C30K

TYPE DESCRIPTION

The couplers are designed to achieve coupling differences in the operating frequency
range at the output ports. The phase-shift between the two outputs is always 90 and is
independent of frequency. The isolation between these two ports depends heavily on the
VSWR of the port loads.

Combiners are used to combine the signals of several transmitters and translators into one
antenna system. In view of the unique configurations required by individual systems, Elti
perform a detailed analysis before recommending customised solutions to the customer.
Compact designs and robust construction make them easy to position and install.
Combiners are available with two cavity band-pass filters. Custom solution with three cavity
filters are available on request.
FM combiners are available from 300 W to 80 kW per channel. All combiners feature an
adjustable coupling loop to enable tuning of the desired 3 dB width to the amplitude/phase
characteristic of filters.

Starpoint Combiners
Starpoint combiners (type A) represent a compact and effective solution when there is a large
channel spacing between the transmitters and translators. In the starpoint configuration it is
possible to combine up to four band-pass filters. The starpoint combiner is pre-tuned to the
requested frequency, and is easily retuned on site.

Constant Impedance Combiners

Constant impedance combiners (type B) consist of pairs of 3 dB couplers and band-pass filters
with the dummy load connected in modules for each of the narrow-band inputs to the combiner.
They are commonly used when the channels of the transmitters and translators are close, or
when connecting a new module to a broadband input in order to open additional channels.

A Combination Of Starpoint And Constant Impedance

Combiners
When more than four transmitters and translators need to be connected in the same antenna
system, a combination of starpoint and constant impedance combiners can be installed (type C).

GSM applications
The 7/16 (DIN) is a scaled-up weatherproof connector with
a sealing O-ring. In some applications this connector can be
used up to 7,5 GHz. Connector styles are available for flexible,
older, clamp and cable
conformable and corrugated cable types. Solder,
termination processes are used for this series. These connectors
are typically used in mobile applications and as test equipment where vibration
pecial design techniques for
resistance and environmental protection is required. Special
this series of connectors have resulted in previously unattainable levels of return loss (VSWR)
and intermodulation distortion (IMD). 7/16 connectors are a high-power high-frequency
solution for coaxial connections.

Technical Data

132

COAXIAL COMPONENTS

Jumper cables
Jumper cables are finished to the required cable length with two appropriate connectors and a heat shrink tube to guarantee
water resistance. Flexible and super-flexible cable types are available in dimensions from 1/4 up to 2 1/4.
Connectors are available in both male and female type, as well as in straight or angled version. 7/16 connectors are the
most rugged RF connectors that can support the severest environmental conditions. 360 soldered joining enables low
intermodulation (IMD).
All jumper cables are tested up to 2,2 GHz.

Coaxial connectors
type EIA
IEC 339, EIA RS-225

These quality connectors and additional supporting elements are the result of decades of
experience. The whole range is designed to withstand severe environmental conditions.
Precise manufacturing enables solid connections and low intermodulation (IMD) products.
The EIA family of coaxial connectors are available in 7/8, 1 5/8, 3 1/8, 4 1/2 and 6 1/8,
all of which are suitable for RF applications. They support cables with foam dielectric and airdielectric cables.
Connectors are delivered with an added inner conductor, and most are straight type
connectors. Supporting elements such as couplings, gas barriers and gas inlet valves are also
available for a complete installation solution.

Technical Data

138

COAXIAL COMPONENTS

Elti connectors are suitable for all major cable manufacturers. Each type of connector suits designated cable type. The only
difference is at foam cable 7/8. RFS produces this cable with larger inner diameter; therefore inner is rather different than from
other suppliers. When ordering specify for which cable the connector is required.
These charts will help you find the product you are looking for.

Adaptors for any size
Low VSWR 1:1,05

ELTI supplies rigid lines of different types. Low-loss copper and copper are used to ensure high
conductivity. The tubes are connected with silver-plated brass sleeves tightened with tube clamps. The
inner conductors are connected with silver-plated brass bullets.

COAXIAL COMPONENTS

Rigid line tubes

The maximum production length of a tube is 5 meters. If the maximum length is used, then the inner
conductors have to be supported by inner supports. All dimensions can be ordered with connecting
flanges for outdoor use.
All line types are made from the same material. The inner part is made from low-loss copper and outer
from aluminium or copper. Nominal impedance is 50 Ohm and VSWR is 1:1,05.
More detailed information is available on request.

Inner supports
ELTI manufactures inner supports for all our rigid lines. The supports are designed to maintain
excellent connectivity in rigid line connections. Silver-plated brass is used for the inner conductor.
The ends are slotted and a circlip ensures excellent contact. All the support plates are made of
high quality Teflon (PTFE) that has been controlled and adjusted before manufacturing.

Flanges
These flanges are designed for brazing directly on the rigid line at the construction point, where connections are
custom made. Flanges are produced for EIA standard complete range in two formats: fixed and swivel.
For flange type coupling kits see details on page 140 (short coupling elements with gaskets and screws).

CEL 50-40-604

Coupling kits
Coupling kits are used for connecting indoor rigid line components. The kit comprises an inner bullet, an outer
sleeve and two or more tube clamps. The number of these clamps depends on the rigid line type. Nominal
impedance is 50 Ohm and VSWR is 1:1,05.

COAXIAL COMPONENTS

Elbows
ELTI manufactures aluminium or copper elbows for all our rigid lines. The inner conductor on
each model is milled from a single piece. This ensures a uniform quality both mechanically and
electrically. No castings are used in our elbows.
All the support insulators for the inner conductor are made of high quality Teflon (PTFE) that has
been controlled and adjusted before manufacturing. These are fixed with screws of stainless
steel to make an absolutely airtight seal. Nominal impedance is 50 Ohm and VSWR is 1:1,05.

Adapters
ELTI manufactures a wide variety of adapters for rigid lines. Custom designs are also available.
We guarantee VSWR lower than 1:1,05 on every adapter. The maximum power is the same as
the specifications for the smallest diameter (connector type). Measuring protocols and more
detailed specifications concerning the materials used are available on request.
The adapters that we manufacture are made from solid silver-plated brass. The most common
material for support and isolation details is high quality teflon (PTFE). The Teflon is electrically
controlled before being milled and lathed into its final shape. As different types of Teflon have
different electrical characteristics, these measurements are monitored to help us maintain
uniform high quality. Nominal impedance is 50 Ohm and VSWR is 1:1,05.

COAXIAL COMPONENTS

Gas barriers
Gas barrier is used when there is need to block the air in the cable or to set up air channel
around the component which does not seal or is not dedicated for sealing.
Gas barrier is manufactured from high quality silver-plated brass and provide excellent sealing.

159

Coaxial
dummy loads
RF Load Resistors, 50-Ohm, light weight, dry coaxial loads can be used in various
application where power termination in RF connection lines is necessary. All power ratings
declared are for continuous operation, however, data is available for special applications
and pulsed power conditions.
