Graphing Transformations Game

Sarah Jarnagin
Targets:
Level 3: Translating between equations and graphs with
transformations.
Objectives:
Review graph transformations and how they relate to the
equation of the graph.
Practice graphing functions from the equation.
Practice writing the transformed equation based on the graph.
Resources:
Student Composition Notebook
Graphing Transformations activity bag
o Felt squares
o Yarn
o Equations and Graphs for reference
Learning Plan (90 min):
Discuss Homework (15 min)
Walk around the room and check that each student has
homework completed.
Answer any questions students have while walking around.
If there are any common questions, bring it to the front of the
class and work through it together.
Graphing Transformations Activity (65 min)
Get into card groups.
Pass out one graphing transformations bag per group.
Remind students to get out composition notebooks.
Instruct students to read the half sheets in their bag and
separate contents accordingly.
Go through the half sheet with them to solidify their
understanding of what is being asked of them.
Walk around the room and assist pairs as they work through the
activity.
Check each pair as they complete each graph to make sure they
are correct.
Close (10 min)
Bring class together to work through common difficulties.

Draw a card from the deck that reflects their seat assignments to
allow groups to share answers or difficulties.
Pass out homework worksheet and remind students of
expectations when completing it.

Assessments
Group work
An informal assessment is administered when I check student
understanding by walking around and checking their work as
they complete each graph.
Homework
Informally check understanding by walking around and looking at
completed homework. Take note of common mistakes.
Entrance Ticket
Next class period students will receive an entrance ticket to work
through that covers both domain and graphing transformations.
We will check each others and use this as a basis for the next
lesson.
