training programs in Germany, Egypt, and Israel in 1998, including an extended exercise with the elite Fernsphlehrkompanie 200 at the NATO I-LRRP School in
Pfullendorf. Was a member of a Marine detachment charged with protecting American nationals in Albania later that same year. Deployed to Iraq in 2003 during
the beginning stages of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Returned to Iraq in 2004, and again in 2005, providing deep reconnaissance support to conventional and special
operations forces. With 2nd Force Recon's deactivation in 2006, re-assigned to the School of Infantry (West) as an instructor in the Reconnaissance Training
Company. Conversant in German. Brutally honest, holds no qualms about being seen as uncouth and opinionated. Has no patience with those he considers
indecisive, lazy, and dishonest. Not terribly popular with his GIJOE teammates, but someone they trust and respect on and off the field.

September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Enlisted in the Army not long after, his high ASVAB line scores mitigating any negatives
suggested by his past personal history (his AFQT score placed him squarely in the 99 th percentile). Assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment
(Airborne). Spent his first deployment overseas in Iraq, conducting combat patrols in and around the city of Kirkuk through most of 2003. Deployed to
Afghanistan in 2006, working alongside conventional and special ISAF forces in Zabul province. Returned to Afghanistan in early 2008 for another tour, this
time, in the country's northeast. GIJOE teammates will occasionally have their laughs at his expense, poking fun at the time he spent as a folk art-peddling
New Ager. But the jokes never go beyond innocuous jabs. They know that in many ways, Meyers' journey is a microcosm of the one collectively being taken
by a whole generation of arrested adolescents still trying to come to terms with their place in a new world filled with fear and uncertainty. It may have taken
a tragedy of truly horrific proportions to make him realize the frivolousness of an existence built around self-indulgent complacency, but all that really
matters to them now is that he's trying to do all the right things and make his way through the world the best that he can.

Biathlon and US Army Public Affairs, committed to extend his enlistment in 2005 and declined participation in the 2006 Winter Olympics altogether.
