Question
...jump into the recording.

Answer
Mhmm

Question
Because last time I...just spent 13 minutes recording...that was bad. Uhm,
How have you been doing since last time we talked?

Answer

Uhm, better since last time because I was actually...I knew what day, what time
to hand it in, so I was not as stressed because I still haven't been placed. But I
was placed in a preschool and they go on holidays for two weeks so I couldn't do
my practicum in that two weeks. So therefore, I had to get an extension on the
top of- to finish. Be able to finish my practicum. So...

Question
Yeah, last time you were upset.

Answer

Yeah. I was, I was.

Question
Yeah, so now you feel better?

Answer

Oh yeah, of course. [inaudible] But I've been checking every day and there's no
grade mark on there, so.

Question
Did they tell you...when it will be post?

Answer

No. So I think maybe this afternoon I'll email the teacher and see.

Question
Could you please let me know when you get the result?

Answer
Yeah, no worries.

Question

I just want to know, uh, I'm not really interested about the result itself. I'm
interested about how do you feel about it.

Answer
Yes.

Question

All right, so if you can let me know how much you got and what do you think...?

Answer
Yeah

Question

...about it. In terms of, you're happy or not happy for some reason. So you'll tell
me [inaudible] whatever happen. So today we will focus primarily about you as a
learner. What have you discovered about yourself? In terms of learning by
yourself and not having lectures.

Answer
I think I definitely need that person in front like, in the room talking. I think I
respond well to the answer the questions there in the moment. I can answer
them or I can give another question. And to hear other people's thoughts too is
really nice. And can sort of make you think about your own thoughts and
compare the two and stuff like that. I just...that I like to be in that room and then
to think about that subject at that time type of thing, so...

Question

Okay, and...you thought...so you do find that it really suits your learning style...?

Answer
No, no it doesn't. I think if I didn't have any background information on this
topic, I would struggle big time. But because I had that information from
[inaudible] I didn't..I didn't like, struggle as bad, type of thing. But which I'm
thankful that I didn't struggle, but, you know, so...

Question
Okay

Answer
Yeah

Question
All right, and uhm...I want to know how did the structure or the design of this unit
change the way you learn.

Answer

It didn't really change the way I learned. It made me try to adapt, but it didn't, I
didn't adapt. Basically it...it's a teaching subject. It should be taught with a
teacher in front of you because that's what we're going to do. We're going to
teach children in front of us, not through a computer. And the next course that
follows this one is the same Flick learning.

Question
You're taking this semester?

Answer

Yeah, so that's fantastic too. No, uhm...I don't know. It's, it's hard that you've
been doing a certain thing with the teacher being at the front, then you teaching
inside a classroom full. Since primary school to high school to...then I went to
Tathe and then all of a sudden, hold on a second, only once a week we come tosorry twice. Once every fortnight we come to a classroom to have that little
discussion. Which I don't find much value in, because there's so much she's
trying to teach that week. When other people have questions for the other week
that she"

"Answer
Little discussion, which I don't find much value in because there's so much she's
trying to teach that week, when other people have questions for the other week
that she wasn't there. It's all mumbled. Like it's not as interacting because shes
trying to give out the content.

Question

Do you think that the on line content is not that valuable, or its too much, or?

Answer
Its valuable to people who can be able to sit there for 3, 4 hours to go through it.
But honestly, not many people have that much time to sit there in front of the
computer and read through it. And you may read through it and it is valuable
and I'm not gonna lie it is valuable. But there's other distractions. You've got
family life, you've got errands. It's not practical, it's not. 4 hours out of every day
just to try to get through that class, it's not.

Question

So lets focus maybe more about Natalie, and why its impractical for you, Do you
have other things to do?

Answer
Yeah, I have other things, like I have other commitments and like chores around
the house. Because it's only me and my dad. So we, my Dad works long hours,
so I'm basically the one who does everything around the house. So I don't really
have time to like sit down and do this, because I know I have to do this, this, and
this and this. Like I have a list in my head that I know I need to get through.

Question

Do you work too?

Answer
Yeah I work too at nights. So I'm running around all the time, trying to get
everything done by a certain time, and then get ready for work and go type of
thing.

Question

How many hours do you work?

Answer
I work, I dunno, maybe 10 hours, no more then that, 20 hours. I don't work much
but yeah.

Question

And how many units?

Answer
I have 4 units, yeah so.

Question

So you find it hard to manage?

Answer
Yeah because I want to come to Uni and learn at Uni. Ive made time to come to
Uni. Whatever the time table says, I'm here. Here and I'm learning, there's no
other distractions at home, there's no other distractions. When I'm here' I'm
here. But when I'm at home. I'm not totally with my homework, or with my the
like flip learning work, like I'm not totally there.

Question

So are you trying to say that you're not independent in your learning, or you are?

Answer
Oh, maybe not in my learning. Like I'm independent in other things. And I need
to be independent in other things. So like in home life and in work and getting

everything ready. That just comes before the work. Its hard but that, it comes
before Uni because thats what I have to do. There's, no one else is going to do it
type of thing so its only me like. So, yeah.

Question
Alright, so if we go back to the learning and why you think that you cant be
independent.

Answer

Not that I can't be independent. It's just that there's other things that go, that I'm
thinking about, lick ticking them off: I need to do this this and this and I have a
certain time to do this and a certain time to do the homework and that. But
honestly like its just a pain to go to read through the whole content. And get, try
to get every thing done, its really a pain.

Question
OK this is what I am looking for. Why do you think its a pain?

Answer
Oh

Question
Take your time.

Answer

Oh no. I guess its just a pain because I know I'm spending money to go to Uni
and the class is not being delivered every second week, thats a pain. So the
content I have to get through is on the computer at home. Its just"

"Answer
The class will be delivered every second week. That's okay. So . . . the content
that I have to get through is on the computer at home. I need that person in front
of me speaking. The way I learn is that when I hear someone talk. I can listen. I
can understand that more than reading something and then making a few notes.
I need that verbal . . .someone there verbally speaking . . . because that's how I
learn. So, it gets a bit frustrating . . that i might be reading . . .that I might be
taking the time . . . but, not everything is going in because I am not
understanding properly because it is just their words.

Question

So . . . let's say that if we add . . . assuming that there is an online lecture.

Answer
Yeah. That would be good.

Question
Are you saying that the same amount of time that you would rather have it face
to face than when it is recorded?

Answer

Yeah. And in that way, I can pause it or I can stop it. Go do a couple of things.
Come back to it. Like . . .it's not where . . .like... with online reading, it's just
chunks and chunks of texts of reading that you had to read through . . . where if
it was like verbal . . . I can sit there and I can listen. I can pause it. Maybe, write
a couple of notes if I need to. Then start it again and keep going. I think that
would be beneficial. Very beneficial.

Question
Were you going to go back to the meeting yesterday, or were you going to say:
Okay, that's enough for me

Answer

If I needed more clarification from the lecture, maybe I would do the rating . . .
but, the lecture would be my main priority . . . to get through to . . . listen and
understand. Me . . . personally . . . if there was lecture or rating. I would
definitely do lecture and not the rating.

Question
Why? Because even within the lecture . . . [??] the verbal indication would not
be nearly as comprehensive as the reading right?

Answer
Yeah.

Question
So the lot of information would not be as soon as if it was written.

Answer

I think I would understand more through the lecture and then to sit down and
read the notes. I would read the notes if I am not one hundred percent on the
information in the lecture to clarify, but if I understand the lecture, then not. But,
if I understand the lecture and if I further want to learn more about a certain
subject, I would read up on it.

Question
Okay. How much time did you spend learning this particular unit . . . learning . . .
compared to the other units.

Answer
Not much time. Because I knew I had background information, and I had other
subjects that I didn't know much about. So . . . I put them on top of this subject,
but I shouldn't have, because this subject is what I want to do. And this flip
learning is like . . .

Question

Starting the venue . . .

Answer
Yes.

Answer

Umm. Hmm."

"Question
It says here that you are an asset to the course . . .

Answer

Mm-hmm.

Question
But at the same time you don't like the, the, the way the structure of this unit.
So.

Answer
No.

Question
I'd like to know, even though you stressed that you need that teacher to be
there.

Answer
Yeah.

Question
What other difficult aspect, problem or issues that hindered or stopped your
learning in this unit? Uh-hmm.

Answer

What do you mean? I don't understand.

Question
Okay. Uh-hmm since the first time I interviewed you with the, the group, if you
remember.

Answer

Mm-hmm.

Question
You, you had this negative attitudes about the way the unit is designed.

Answer
Yeah.

Question
And, um, first I want to know if there is any change?

Answer

No, there is no change.

Question
So, this same position . . .

Answer

I'm, I'm less aggravated because I've done the course now. But, 'cause at first it
was a shock because that was my first semester at year(?) and I was thinking
that everything was gonna be just that year and everything was going to be fine
and, and then they throw that, like, a spear(?) in the works and then you, you
realize, hang on a second. This is not right.

Question
So, now you've taken another course that is using the same concept.

Answer

Yeah, and I'm gonna argue, too. Because there's, like, they have to hear it. I
know they don't want to hear it, but they have to hear that, they have to hear
that some complaints.

Question
Mm-hmm.

Answer

Not everyone can sit back and just take what's happening. Like, yeah. So, um,
I'm gonna be the one that sits there and be's like, well. Because the, it's such, it's

a teaching course. You don't teach from the computer. You teach in person. It's
like . . .

Question
All right. So, but don't you think that this is very risky. Because this is the second
course that you're taking and uh, don't you think you need to adapt to this
environment?

Answer

For, for, to a certain extent, yes. I would need to. But, I'm not gonna just adapt
and, and be done with it. I'm going to take a stand because this is my learning.

Question
Okay.

Answer

This is, it's not, this is not something, this is going to be my life. What I'm going
into. What I'm learning. This is going to be my future. I'm not gonna just sit down
and just, and just do whatever they say type of thing. I, I need to express what I
feel and see if I can, I can change something. But . . .

Question
What would your message be like?

Answer

I'm gonna just say not everybody learns the same way. Everyone learns
differently and this is a teaching course and for you to have every second awake
a flip learning. We yes, you go through the content with us but we also watch
how you teach and how you teach doesn't, that's how we're gonna have to try to
teach and if, that's, that's not, that's not there. That's, we're gonna be hands on
learners, they're not being hands on. It's like, they tell you to do this, but they do
that. They do the other thing. They do something completely different. So.

Question
Okay. Um again, I'm playing devil advocate here.

Answer

Mm-hmm.

Question
Don't. don't you think the University, or the University life is all about
independence and being responsible for your own learning.

Answer
It, it is independence. I understand that. But . . .

Question

In this unit, particular unit it tries to, um, put this into practice. That you do your
work online.

Answer
Mm-hmm.

Question

And from there you complete your reading.

Answer
Mm-hmm.

Question

And you come to class with questions and discussion and I need to understand,
uh, what is your view of responsibility in the, in, in this circle.

Answer
You have a responsibility to do the online stuff, You, you have to do your
independent learning, like, for you to better yourself and to better your
education. I understand. But, what also is, at, at first week I was okay. I did the
online learning. I felt okay. I was all right coming, coming to class the fortnight
and, and only a couple of people"

"ANSWER

but also is um--at first, first week, I was okay. I did the online learning. I felt
okay, I was alright coming to class, the ??00:13, and only a couple did the online
stuff, so that was discouraging. And then um next week, online stuff and the
week after, come to class. And only, only one or two people did the online
learning, so there was no discussion about the week of the, like the week of the
online learning, basically, because only a couple people did it.
So really its basically were having, were only having like a class
every second week with no middle class because only a couple people did the
online.
And I understand that we, as the learner, we have the responsibility to to do it,
but it is also very discouraging when you do it, but the teacher has to go through
that that week of learning in the time of the other week of, like a new week of
learning.

QUESTION
Yeah, so are you trying to say that the focus remains with the weeks that you
have face-to-face tutorials, but you have the week that is falling online, its
not well-covered

ANSWER

No, yeah, yeah.

QUESTION
Okay, alright. And uh, what do you think will make you more disciplined and
committed to the online material? Let me confirm that after the first couple of
weeks, you havent accessed the online materials.
ANSWERED: I, I accessed, I accessed it to see what was being taught that week,
like I would look through, just quickly clicked through everything, looked through
the headings and see if I--I need the information, so I didnt actually do the
um, after the first couple of weeks.

QUESTION
After that?

ANSWER
I just, I just kept looking, making sure that I knew, knew--I understand, you
know,t he topic that was on that week, and I did, so there was really no point.

QUESTION
Mm-hm.

ANSWER
Um if I wanted to further, further my understanding of the topic, there was
information there, so I could, I could read it if I had time or if I wanted to--I
watched some of the videos that were on there because she put videos on and
thats how I learned, so I skipped all the reading and watched the videos.
Um I found that okay, like I found that valuable, but

QUESTION

So youre kind of a visual learner?

ANSWER
Yeah.

QUESTION

Or you need that virtual

ANSWER
I need someone, that voice, if if I sit down and listen to someone talk and like
without writing down, I would take more from that than sitting down and writing.
Thats just how--Im a verbal, I need that, I need that ??03:32 like that.

QUESTION

Yeah, one of the students I [tutored?], she said that Im a social learner.

ANSWER
Social, yeah.

QUESTION

I really like the name and I think I will use it in my thesis.

ANSWER
Yeah.

QUESTION

So you like this social aspect of learning.

ANSWER
Yeah, yeah.

QUESTION

Instead of doing it by yourself.

ANSWER
Yeah.

QUESTION

So you need this kind of intellectual communication

ANSWER
Yeah.

QUESTION

and argument.

ANSWER
Yeah, exactly. Arguments, um anything, anything that I can have a point of view
on and I can verbally announce that, and and then see how that goes, like have
that reaction straight away from the teacher. I can verbally see her, her um--not

verbally, I could, like I could see her facial expression and her--its just it gets
me interested and gets me connected with the content.

QUESTION
Okay. Lets say that if there was like some sort of marking for the online
materials,

ANSWER
Mm-hm.

QUESTION
would you be more committed?

ANSWER

Well, you would have to be.

QUESTION
Okay.

ANSWER

If it was marking, yeah, you would have to be.

QUESTION
Okay.

ANSWER

One of my subjects had a um quiz every week on the, on the um, online, where
you had to go on and complete the quiz. And you had to do it or thats it.

QUESTION
And that was fine.

ANSWER
Yeah.

QUESTION
Okay. Alright, but since its like kind of optional"

"Answer

Online, but you had to go on and complete the quiz and you had to do it
[inaudible] and that's it.

Question
[inaudible]

Answer
Yeah.

Question
All right, but since it's a slight kind of, optional right there, you don't feel like
doing it because it's boring?

Answer

It's not boring. It's just because you already know. You've already sat down and
you already learned the content. I feel like because I already know the stuff being
taught, I don't need to sit down again and reread what I already know, type of
thing. And in that time that if I do reread, I could be doing another subject or
other assessments in that time that it takes me to reread something that I
already know. For me, I feel like that's a bit of wasting time and I don't have
much time so I need- I need to prioritize.

Question
Okay. [inaudible] For the first and second assignment- for the last trivia that we
had, I think you did some sort of independant learning by reading on your own
and checking on some other resources. So, what is different between what you
have done in the assignment and the online learning? And I'm sure that you did
the same thing with the second assignment?

Answer

Yeah, the second assignment- I didn't use any of the online stuff. For the first
assignment, I did.

Question
But you did it yourself, right?

Answer
Yes.

Question
You did your research.

Answer
Yeah.

Question
And you went to [inaudible] online?

Answer
And I had to look- yeah, I went to the library, I looked online and I also skimmed
through the online stuff, but it didn't give me the information that I need for my
certain topic of the first assessment. So, I had to do mainly [inaudible].

Question

So, here you're trying to say something here I don't want to hear from you. Why
is it working here, but it's not working on the other part of the unit?

Answer
Because the assessment is more practical. It's more where you're hands-on and
you're with the children and I feel confident in that aspect of the education. Like,
hands on. Where as the essay writing- you need that information to back up your
argument. So, you needed that online information to support your own
information that you created through the assessment.

Question

So, purpose is what you're trying to say here?

Answer
Yeah.

Question
[crosstalk]

Answer
Purposeful for the assessments, for sure. For the first assessment- the essay
because that was- that's an essay. I have a problem with the essay, too. We
shouldn't be doing essays in a teaching- because you don't...

Question

But you are at a university...

Answer
Yeah, I know. [crosstalk] I know. That's the thing. Yeah, from the essay to the
second assessment for the practicum- big difference in- like,my stress levels, a
big difference. The second assessment, I felt like- the observations, we had to do
10 observations. The were a bit tedious because they were big observations, but
other than that, writing the second assessment- writing through it, I felt that was
good. I can't say it was easy, but it was easier than the essay because I feel
more confident in the practical work of child care than writing.

Question
You were able to refelect on your own work?

Answer

Yeah and I was able to see the improvement of my focus child, which made me
feel good because I had contributed to her learning.

Question
Okay. I would like to ask about the transition from [inaudible] to university and I
think you were"
"Asker: I would like to ask about the transition from TAFE to university, and I
think you're one of the good candidates for this question. How did you find the
transition between TAFE to America?

Answer

There was a big difference, the way the assessments were handed out in TAFE,
compared to uni, there was a big difference. In TAFE, the teachers kind of went
through the assessments with you, and sort of just clarified everything that was
written on the assessment, where, uni just gives you the assessment and then
basically, it's more independent, uni. They basically give you the assessment and
you take it. I feel like TAFE had more, definitely heaps more support, network,
and the teachers are more supportive, than uni, and I feel like uni, it's... There's
no, the teacher, there's no, that, it's basically the teachers teach, and then they
go. Where, TAFE, was more of, more social type of learning, as well. You have
that connection with the teachers at TAFE, where uni, you sort of, there's like a,
invisible wall between the teacher and the students.

Question
So do you think that at TAFE, teachers know your name?

Answer
Yeah.

Question
Who you are?

Answer
Yeah.

Question
But here, it's kind of limited.

Answer
Yeah.

Question
And do you think this affects your learning?

Answer

Yeah. Because that's how I learn, I need that social, too.

Question
Is that happening only a few hours in play, or all the units?

Answer

All of the units, I don't think any of the teachers knew my name. It was very...
They teach, they go, they teach, they have a couple...

Question
Do you think the size of the class is a factor?

Answer

No. Because TAFE had bigger classes, still had that connection, TAFE, I think we
had maybe 40 children in one class, and here we only have maybe 25, 30, so, it's
not the size of the class.

Question
Okay. So you find it different, and how are you planning to adapt to this? Or, have
you already started adapting?

Answer

Through the beginning of this semester to the end of the semester, I've definitely
adapted a bit, likely, I haven't adapted completely. I think it will take me awhile
to fully adapt to how uni is. And how it's run, and how everything works. But, I've
adapted, you have to, because at the end of the day, you are in charge of your
own learning. So you need to try to... Try to... Go their way.

Question
Alright. So, go their way?

Answer

Like, go the uni way.

Question
What is your way, then?

Answer
I would like more verbal discussions. Like, I know there's... I don't know... I don't
know. It's just, yeah. I can't explain it, it's so hard. I think time is a bit of an issue,
too. Like, the teachers at uni have to deliver the content. And for them to deliver
the content there might be little to no discussion to deliver, but the content. So,
it's just different, it's different from TAFE. And then that's where I'm like, I'm not
in TAFE anymore. I need to adapt to this learning. And that's what I've been
trying to do, through the first semester.

Question

And how do you feel, that, your learning, is it progressing? What have you
learned about yourself, as a learner?"

"Question
Your learning is it progressing? What have you learned about yourself as a
learner?

Answer

I've learned that I need to put myself in two conversations through Uni. And that
when there is conversation, I need to speak up. I need to involve myself a bit
more than I have been. I don't know if this really counts but the first semester I
was on the I-pad tying. I feel like if I hand write it I, feel like if I retained a lot
more information. So I've decided to hand write this semester. So, it's about
trying new things.

Question
Exactly.

Answer

And seeing if you learned. Which way helps you learn. I know Bernie, Bernie likes
to color code things, that's how she learns. I think I need to sort of try to find a
new way for me to learn as well.

Question
I think you're a word person.

Answer

Yes, so I'm gonna hand write. I'm pretty sure Ill get more out of Uni if I hand
write.

Question
Okay. Let me ask you this question, before we move on to another topic. Now
you're taking another course with difficult learning. Are you planning to be the
same? To do the same and just ignore the online materials?

Answer
I'm gonna give it a go. I will give it a go and I'll give it an honest one hundred
percent go. In the first couple weeks I'll do it. I don't know if I'm going to know
the content of this subject, so, I'm gonna try my hardest. And I'm going to so the
online stuff. And its a new teacher I still need to sort of see how she teaches, her
style of teaching. But yeah, I'll give it a go. But probably-

Question

Do you think that you will say 'I managed to pass this course with minimum
effort I would do the same thing with this?

Answer
A little. But see i don't know much about the next subject so.

Question

Childhood development?

Answer
Pedagogical Learning.

Question

Is it the same instructor?

Answer
I'm pretty sure. Introduction to Pedagogical Leadership. It's a two hour tutorial.
There's no lectures but that would be.

Question

You don't have to mention the person but is she the same or?

Answer
No, its a different person. I haven't met her. I have the class tomorrow, the first
class. But its a different person.

Question

What do you like in life?

Answer
Whoa!

Question

Something that you are very interested in. Something that you think of
frequently and you love to do.

Answer
I like to be outdoors.I like to be, when I have free time I like to go, and see. And I
like the environment. I like, I like, yeah. Is that they type of question you, answer
you were thinking?

Question

Okay so you enjoy hiking?

Answer
Yeah, I love hiking yeah.

Question

So lets say that you haven't heard about the three sisters in Beaumont. This is
the first time you hear. You feel that you need to go there and that you need to
learn about that place before you go. What would you do? You know where I'm
going?

Answer
Yeah. I would go find. Me personally, I would go find pear flips or go to an
information center int he Blue Mountains and I would ask for information from
them. That's how I would go. I wouldn't go on the internet. I would ask friends if
they've heard anything about three sisters and what's it like."

"Answer

I wouldnt go on the internet I wouldnt go look anything up umm I would

ask friends if they heard anything about three sisters and whats it like and
um and then would go and I know that there would be information there that I
could read on blocks and stuff like that thats how I would go about it.

Question
ok um so you would read something right, and you would also go and ask a
person how the background is alright so have you tried to use this strategies
learning in a university type of environment would you do the same thing

Answer

how wouldnt the person that knows about it be the class teacher like knows
about a particular topic

Question
for example larice and umm the other person..

Answer

Bernie we always..we communicate with each other we put our views and with
their good support and network we all have the same education through taff and

we know other things so we go to each other for clarification and then if we

dont know we will have to find more information so go through textbooks or
online to look

Question
ok by the way your friends are taking the same courses as you or

Answer
yeah

Question
ok so you consult together, alright so just speaking what motivates your
learning, what motivates [intangible] learning

Answer

what motivates my learning.. I feel more strongly about children about teaching
children because they are going to be the future of our world and I wanna be.. I
want to be that hands on teacher that is able to umm learn and experience stuff

Question

You strongly believe the [social aspect?]?

Answer
Yes.

Question

Seven questions and none of them work.

Answer
Sorry.

Question

It's alright. Actually I enjoyed the conversation. I was able to learn a lot of things
from your point of view. To sum up our interview discussion; How would you
suggest the Flip learning to be like?

Answer
I would like the teachers to take into consideration different types of people's
learning. Instead of just putting up all people's text stuff online maybe put more
videos, more voice recordings, or see that there's not one way of learning. People
don't all learn the same way. I know it's easier for them to just put text up but
it's not easy for some students to just read through text and try to get the same
result as everyone else.

Question
A mix of--

Answer
A mix of stuff. Also it doesn't get as boring that way. If it's just all text you're
reading through everything and you get bored. If it's maybe a text and a video, a
voice recording, it mixes it up and doesn't make it as plain. To keep your
attention and keep the motivation to get through it.

Question

Great. Would you like to add anything else?

Answer
No not really.
