Data Webometrics, a new tool for Scientometrics Top 1000 by Continent

Premier League The aim of this project is not to rank the institutions according to quality of
the education provided nor their academic prestige, so it should not be used

for comparing them or as a guide for choosing university by candidate
students.

Webometric indicators are provided to show the commitment of the

institutions to Web publication and to the worldwide inititive favouring Open
Access to knowledge. If the web performance of an institution is below the USA-Canada 497

expected position according to their academic excellence, university Europe 356
Top Oceania authorities should reconsider their web policy, promoting substantial Asia 82
increases in the volume and quality of their electronic publications. The Oceania 38
Top Africa information provided can be used in combination with other bibliometric and Latin America 21
scientometric indicators for the evaluation of the scientific research of the

You can expect some relevant shifts in the position of the institutions as
important changes will occur in the next scheduled ranking, including log
normalization, a third source for inlinks and a revised and updated new list.

Specials Due to coverage biases, the Exalead search engine will substitute Ask
(Teoma) as the fourth source in order to better reflect the European

In order to make feasible a comparative analysis between consecutive

NIH and CSIRO will be added to the Research Councils section. Google
Catalogue position rankings will not be longer maintained. We intend to publish the full
list of the R&D centres' Catalogue in order to receive suggestions and error
reports.
Universities by country
Several correspondents have pointed us about duplicated entries. This is not
R&D Centres by country
a mistake as several universities still maintain two (or even three) different
institutional domains roughly equivalent. This is an unadvisable practice that
hurts the global position of the institution.

Cybermetrics Research Group (formerly Laboratorio de
Links Internet) is a research unit of the CINDOC - CSIC that acts as an
observatory of the academic and scientific research activities and publication

Impact Factor, build on the same idea as the bibliographic databases
based Impact Factor of the Journal Citation Reports published by
the Institute of Scientific Information, now Thomson Scientific.

Comparable statistics on S&T offering valid, reliable and relevant information

on the performance of R&D can be found throughout the Web, as many
countries are developing their own observatories. Global scenarios involving
universities were recently published by the Shanghai Jiao Tong
University (Academic Ranking of World Universities), or the
Higher Education Supplement of The Times. Relevant bibliometric
indicators are open published periodically by ISI in the in-cites website
based on the data of the Essential Science Indicators database.
