Diode Rectifiers
Objective: To simulate Rectifier Circuits in PSIM, find average value of Average
Output voltage and Current through the load and implementing filter capacitor.
One of the most important applications of diodes is in the design of rectifier
circuits. A diode rectifier forms an essential building block of the dc power
supplies required to power electronic equipment. A rectifier is a circuit which
converts the Alternating Current (AC) input power into a Direct Current (DC)
output power. The input power supply may be either a single-phase or a multiphase supply.
Procedure:
1) Open PSIM, Create new file

2) Select elements from element toolbar or click ELEMENTS from menu bar>Power-> Switches Diode
3) Assign values to elements double clicking them.
4) Voltage probe or different probes from element toolbar as per the requirement
at desired nodes/points.
5) Double click on diode and assign diode voltage drop=0.7 volt.
6) Simulate->Simulation control
7) Run the simulation
8) A new window of Data Display Selection will appear, select variables to be
observed.
9 ) See the plots.

Q. 1) Find Vdc, ripple factor and efficiency?

Q. 2) Add Capacitor (start from 10uF) in parallel with Resistor varies it; observe
the waveform, what is the nature of waveform? Why the output voltage waveform
does not follows the input waveform?

Q. 3) Find the value of Capacitor to get maximum DC output voltage.

Q. 4) Add inductor (1 mH) instead of Capacitor. What is the output.

Q. 5) Add Capacitor in series instead of parallel, Comment of output.

Q.6) Comment on the effect of adding inductor in series.

[B] Full Wave Rectifier (Center tapped):

The Full wave rectifier utilizes both halves of the input sinusoid. To provide a
unipolar output, it inverts the negative halves of the sine wave.

Procedure:
1) Select Elements-> Power-> Transformers-> 1ph-Transformer
2) Select two such transformers and make an arrangement as shown in fig.3
3) Double click on Transformer make Np(primary)=250 and Ns(secondary)=17
4) Observe the current through Load and Voltage across Load.
5) Answer the questions through rigorous simulations

Q. 1) Why Current waveform does not start at t=0?

Q. 2) What is the effect of increasing load resistor on load voltage and load
current?

Q.3) Instead of Load R add inductor and battery source in series with it and
observe the effect. Observe the effect for various values of R and L. Initially take
R=0.5(increase the value each time by 0.5), L=100mH (decrease it by 20mH each
time) E=3 Volt. Comment on your observations.

Q. 4) Connect R in series and C in parallel with resistive load. Determine the

values of R and C so has to have minimum ripple in the output.

[C] The Bridge Rectifier:

It is an alternative implementation of the full-wave rectifier. The circuit is known
as the bridge rectifier because of the similarity of its configuration to that of the
Wheatstone bridge.
Procedure:
Select Elements->Power->Switches->1-ph Diode Bridge

Fig. 4

Q.1) What is the actual peak voltage be on the output of the full wave bridge?

Q. 2) What is the peak current that will flow through any of the 4 diodes?

Q3) Add Capacitor across the load. Comment on the output you get with increase
in capacitor value.
