deliberate,asBuzzFeedsguideisoneofthefewtoacknowledgeandstandardizeterms
andphrases(andmemes)thatarebecomingincreasinglyfrequentontheWeb.

ThisguidehasbeencustomizedforMediaite.Itismeanttobeamasterdocforformatting,
spelling,headlines,andotherlanguageconventions.Ifyouhavesuggestionsforadditions
totheguide,pleasesuggestthemtoAndreworJon.Theywillreviewaccordingly.

HEADLINES

Headlinesshouldbenomorethan2lineslongonanarticlepage.(Thatworksouttoa
maxofabout85charactersonmostAbramssites.)

Therewillbeoccasionalexceptionstotheaboveagreatheadlinethatdemandsalittle
morespaceandbleedstothethirdline.Butitshouldbetheexception,nottherule.

Eachheadlineshouldhoneinononesingle,distilledthoughtaboutthepiece.Trytouse
oneactiveverb(nottwoorthree).Avoidpackingmultiplethoughtsintoasingleheadline.
Ifyoudousemorethanoneverbclause,thesecondshouldbeessentialtothestory:
NewsweekSoldtoIBT,WillRemain100%Digital(Boringexample,butyougetthe
idea.)

Relyonactionverbs.Avoidhackneyed,hyperbolicones.Useslams,blasts,ripsonly
whenmeritedbyapist.Theyshouldonlybeusedif,say,apunditorpolgoesoffona
genuinerantnotforcommonplacecolororhyperbole.Noteveryheadlineshould
scream.Wedontneedtooverselleverysegment.

Youcanincludeasentencequoteinaheadlinewithtwoqualifiers:Thequoteshould
beshortandpunchy(notlongsentences).Anditshouldbestrongenoughtojustify
inclusionintheheadline.Otherwise,paraphrasingworks.

Avoidpackingheadlineswithlotsofsinglequotedwords.One(ortwomax!)should
suffice.Ifyouuseafullsentencequote,youcanprobablydowithoutawordquote.Use
commonsensehere.(Forexample,thisisnotagoodheadline:ObamaSlamsSillyFox
forFightingHimatEveryCorner).

Itsfinetouselastnamesforshorthand(Weiner,Obama)andtheoccasionalfirstname
(Oprah).Lesserknownfiguresshouldhavefullnamewithaqualifier(CNNsErinBurnett
orCNNsBurnett).Ifyouremoveasubjectsnamefromaheadline,whenfillingoutthe

SEOdescription,usefullnamesforyourmainsubject.

Allotherthingsbeingequal,trytogetthesubjecttowardsthebeginningofaheadline
peoplereadfastontheInternet.

Don'tcapitalizearticles,"a,""an,"or"the,unlesstheyareatthebeginning.Dont
capitalizeandorbut.Dontcapitalizeprepositionslike"on,"in,by,orto,etc.
